British Dog Breeds

When it comes to the vast history of breeding dogs – be it for a particular purpose or just as a companion – the English are one of the first people whose names come to mind. Some of the most famous dog breeds originated from Britain, including bulldogs, corgis, spaniels, and many more. For instance, the widely – beloved Golden Retriever was bred by Scottish baron Sir Dudley Marjoribanks just so that he could have a dog capable of navigating his marshy estate and retrieving the game he had shot down.

Many old English breeds, like the Airedale Terrier, are still around today, officially recognized as a breed in 1886. However, a lot of these dogs have become rarer over time, like the Otterhound, of whom only about 600 are left.
