Terriers are hunting dogs typically bred to hunt vermin and protect their house and barn. Due to their intended purpose of running after pests, terriers are active dogs with high energy levels. Many of these dogs are stubborn and may prove difficult to train. But once trained properly, terriers make the best pets and family dogs.

Their size may vary based on the breed, from as small as 10 inches (Yorkshire terrier) to as big as around 30 inches (the Black Russian Terrier).
