Irish Dog Breeds

There are 9 dog breeds native to Ireland, out of which 8 are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). In fact, two of the most famous Irish breeds, the Irish Setter and the Irish Water Spaniel, were among the first breeds ever recognized by the AKC in 1878. The Kerry Beagle is the one breed yet to be recognized by any major kennel clubs other than the Irish Kennel Club (IKC)

Almost all the native Irish dogs were originally bred as hunting dogs. Today, they make excellent companion dogs and family pets. The Irish Wolfhound is the biggest of the Irish dogs, growing up to 3 feet and weighing as much as 180 pounds. The Irish Terrier and Glen of Imaal are on the smaller side, with heights ranging between 15 and 18 inches.
