Temperament and Behavior
These are highly energetic dogs that love to play and cuddle. They have an affectionate nature, enjoying to spend time with their family members and kids, thus emerging as a good family dog. However, they should be trained properly since they might at times end up being unruly, and prone to barking unnecessarily. This breed is highly intelligent but might show stubbornness at times.
Care
Exercise
Daily exercise is necessary to boost their physical and mental health. A leashed walk or jogging sounds fine. It is playful and has the instinct to take part in activities. If you have a fenced lawn, remove its leash and let it play on its own.
Grooming
The long coat of the Yorkinese requires some attention. Shedding is average, but groom them several times per week. Use a soft brush to keep the long coat healthy and smooth.
Health Problems
The breed is overall healthy with no reported breed specific issues.
Training
They must never be treated like a child like many other small breed dog owners do, but very much like a dog, since, if you show too much affection from puppyhood, there are chances that the pup would grow unruly when adult and start displaying bossy attitude.
If you find your dog tends to bark too much, do not be irritated or frustrated, rather ignore the barking, since it often cries for your attention, or else, out of obstinacy. Take your dog out for a break, or to the dog park to meet other dogs, especially of its stature. Let them play and have fun together. This trip should keep it happy. If that still doesn’t work, seeking for professional help is always the last resort.
To avoid chances of becoming stubborn and unruly, try to keep your puppy tired. Involve it in some new activity every day, play games like chasing, retrieving, or give them some interactive toys. Though the amount of exertion it should do depends on your dog’s age.
Diet/Feeding
Regular high-quality dry dog food meant for breeds of its size.
