The cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and Bichon Frise, Yorkie Bichon, is a designer dog known for their cute looks and low maintenance costs. This toy dog, with a blunt muzzle, black nose, round skull and eyes, and a long tail, has been recognized by different names. With the parent breeds’ completely different temperaments, when the two are made to breed, it is difficult to predict the temperament and the appearance of the resultant cross-breed Yorkie Bichon.

Temperament and Behavior

Initially, the owner might expect the little dog would share fifty-fifty characteristics of both its parents, though this is not always true about how genetics works. The puppy would inherit combinations of different characteristics of its parents that depend upon which traits are more dominant. The independent-natured Yorkie Bichon makes a great companion dog that would cherish the company of its owner. Having a compromising nature, the little dog wouldn’t be too anxious if its master goes out for a while. Though a high-pitch barker, the Yo-chon would make a great watch dog. They are fond of people and love to get attention, but are destructive by nature. They are stubborn at times and being a very curious breed, will try to investigate everything.

Care

Exercise

Yorkie Bichons need some medium amount of exercise schedules every day. Being a small-size breed at that, they do not need it in loads since they are already active by nature and can burn a good amount of calories by their general activities. Let them play freely in an enclosed area. However, it might be difficult for the owner at times to house-train this pet.

Grooming

These dogs, having a typical ‘full coat’, tend to shed a good deal and demand a lot of attention during their shedding periods. This dog requires a haircut from time to time, especially if it is a puppy. A puppy needs daily grooming including regular baths and nail-tip trimming at least once a week. Keep their hair off their face and eyes. The grooming sessions, however, should be short and pleasant to the puppy.

Health Problems

Like most other hybrid dogs, the Yorkie Bichon is otherwise healthy, but might suffer at times from certain specific syndromes with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease being one of them. Common to this breed, this disease leads to an insufficient amount of blood supply to the thigh bones of the hind legs. Surgery can settle this issue.
Other diseases and syndromes: Dental hazards, slipped kneecaps, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), hypothyroidism and eye problems. Some of them are also sensitive to vaccinations.

Training

With both the parents being intelligent, the puppies are born smart and good at learning tricks. Giving them crate training is important, for which, puppy pens (wire crates) are better than plastic crates because, in that case, the pups can see what is going on around them. Also, help them understand what training and grooming processes are. It would also be a good idea to take them to kindergarten and obedience classes at times, since it is common for them to pick up multiple vicious traits like yapping, fearfulness or territorial aggression. Socialization training should include getting used to people, other pets and animals, ‘uncanny’ noises and situations.

Feeding

It is best to feed them raw to help them get the best nutrition. But if you feed them with kibble foods, kibbles like Ziwi Peak, Merrick, Canine Caviar, Nature’s Variety, Nature’s Logic, etc. are good. Maintaining the hydration of its system is important for its health. For this, supply them with enough water. For a puppy, the recommended number of meals is four. The gap of four to five hours between meals is a healthy practice. Also, be sure to remove its food bowl after 10 minutes if you feel that the puppy is not interested in eating. Feed it thrice when it is more than three months old, and twice when it is more than six months.

Interesting Facts

  • The ears of the dog can be both upright and hanging downwards.
  • During hot weather, the dog tends to eat less, and might express interest in eating only at night time.
  • The yorkie bichon puppy might either inherit the silky hair from its yorkie parent or the curly coat from the bichon.

We recently lost our best friend, Toby, an adorable Yorkie bichon, who was 13 and our constant companion. We want to find another of that breed because she was perfect for us and us for her. We are retired and will be wonderful owners. Please help us find our next pet. Thank you so much. We live in Port Orchard, WA. 98366.

Any help please, Harriet and Dick Miles

I have a YoChon named Benji. He is a registered service dog, training was tough because he definitely did not like to go outside for awhile. He’s smart and the sweetest ever. I got him at 3 months old. And he’s been by my side ever since. Spoiled rotten and loves to cuddle. He takes after both parents at the same time. His fur is curly and silky and he barely ever barks.

I have a Bichon Frisée and Yorkie Mix. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. He has had training and was potty pad trained. He is now 4 1/2 years old. We do spend a lot of time together but when I do have to go out for a while he will not use the potty pads. I use to put him in my laundry room with pads but he would cry and not use the pads. He is now scared of the laundry room. So I feel I did more damage than good. So now I give him the other rooms of the house except no bedrooms. Even when I scatter potty pads all around he will not use them and will go anywhere but the potty pads. I do usually walk him before I leave but sometimes I am unable to walk him. However either way he will not use the potty pads. How do I correct this behavior?

  4. Terry says:

I just got my 16 week old Yochon yesterday. His name is Buddy. He slept in a crate last night but needed to be close to my bed where he could see me. He is already playing fetch and peed on potty pad this morning
I can tell he is very intelligent and playful. I fell in love with him the first time I saw him, and I can’t wait to see how he is going to be when he gets older.

My daughter’s Yo-chon is 11 mo old, black and white little cutie. Her given name was Adele, however my daughter always wanted a Sofia, so Sofia it is! She still gets very excited when we visit jumping and nipping. We actually have to tell her “no bite”. She also gets very aggressive when someone comes into driveway..growling, barking. I get very nervous that she will nip/bite. She does sometimes poop in the hallway even though she has been out. When she gets too fresh, my daughter tells her ” you want a time out” she runs under the table. (time out is put into the bathroom). She doesn’t mind grooming or play dates at preschool. What a delight she has been. We love her!

how do you train your pup with the crate

  7. linda says:

I just got a yorky bicion 2 weeks ago she was 9 weeks when we got her. She is the funniest pup you can have and the cutest. The breeder trained them on pee pads by the door and when they left home put them in the bathroom so I put down a pee pad and she does nothing but rip it up.so I didn’t put it back down.she will pee and poop at the door and in the bathroom. When I take her out she will always pee. Sometimes poop to.i did buy her a tie out for the porch so she can go pee in the grass if needed.i onily leave her out 5 to 10 min then bring her in.i do this all day.when I bring her in sometimes she will pee by the door.i did buy her a creat a wire one and a bed and blanket for it.how do I train her with the creat what do I do

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Linda,
Crate training may take several days to weeks depending on your Yorkie Bichon’s age, personality, and past experiences. Make sure that your crate is associated with pleasant things and the training should occur in a series of small steps without going too fast.
      • Introduce your dog to her crate by placing it in an area where you spend a lot of time, like in the family room. Keep a few treats near the crate and then toss some inside it. Continue this step until she enters calmly into the rate to have the food.
      • Start feeding her daily meals near the crate, as it will create a pleasant experience. Close the door once she is standing comfortably inside. Open the door as soon as she finishes the meal.
      • Accustom your Yorkie Bichon to the crate for longer periods of time by encouraging her to enter the crate, praising her, giving her treats, and then closing the door. Sit quietly for 10-15 minutes and then go to another room for about 2-3 minutes. Return and sit quietly for a short period of time. Let her out of the crate and repeat this step 4-5 times a day. Once she stays inside the crate without any signs of anxiety or fear, increase the time for which she remains crated.

I just bought a Yorkie/Bichon on 8.22.19. She was born May 10, 2019. The first night I laid puppy pads in the tub and told her over and over to go potty and she did, 8 days later she is still doing it on the pads. I even bring her to my office and she goes on the pads. She is already learning to fetch, very friendly to everyone including my 5 grandkids who are 10 down to 5 yrs. old. I put her in a tall box at night with a blanket inside and over the top. She sleeps all night, no crying, barking and no accidents. I have no idea if this is typical or I am a very lucky owner. I had a Yorkie for 16 yrs. who passed away 2 yrs. ago. She was very aggressive and a one owner dog. This new little puppy, “Jasmine” (has all of the initials of my Grandkids) has a very loving personality 🙂

My little girl will be 15 in December. She is still very active and in good health. We hike 2.5 miles together 5 days a week. She has a slight heart murmur but is still kicking. She is an absolute delight and so very much loved. Live this breed.

Our precious Yo-chon is about 10 years old now and weighs around 18 pounds. So loyal, loving and smart, he sure does light up our lives, thank God.

  13. Phil Mccormick says:

We have 14 week old yorkichon. He is very smart but can’t grasp letting us know when he has to potty.
We are doing all the normal things for teaching him but no luck.
Any ideas or help will be appreciated.

    • Alison says:

Our little girl is a year old now and just finally grasped potty training. Don’t give up just be patient with your baby and don’t give up.

  14. Chanin Tomlinson says:

Hello. I have a 4 month old Yorkie/Bichon. His ears have been changing the last 2 weeks and the one has a ” wrinkle” that makes it look different than the other. Will it change with age or is this just how it will be? What about taping? Thank you.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Chanin,
Consider taking your Yorkie Bichon pup to the vet so that he can have a close look at your pet and have its ears examined. The vet will be able to tell you the cause of the problem and whether it needs taping.

I have a yochon called poppy she is 4 months now she’s going mad with teething love to pinch the socks but she’s not attempted to bite anything other than her toys which she’s got a box full. She’s very energetic loves to play but a little bully to our older dog ruby who’s a toy poddle X. Poppy has been really easy to toilet train but she do have little accident on times she crate trained and she loves it that’s where she goes for quiet time but the past week she’s found a new sleeping place on the back of the sofa. She’s quiet a character who we love to bits and could never imagine our life without her.

  16. karen says:

my borkie is the sweetest loving dog she brings happiness and makes everyone laugh. Although she’s very sassy and savage at times. She’s very picky whenever it comes to eating so its a struggle to get her to eat. She’ll get tired of just about everything quick. Any recommendations? Please let me know soon we really want her to eat and be healthy. The weird thing is in our apartment another dog lives below and whenever we hang out she seems to eat fine with him and she’ll eat some of his food. Also she gets very anxious and she pretty much has separation anxiety we can’t leave her for 5 minutes or she’ll go crazy and bark and whine/cry. But otter than that we all love her so much she’s silly loving shy sweetest dog i love her with all my heart.

    • Larry says:

What is she eating? Kibble? Is out all day (live feeding)? Our little Gracie was also a picky eater until we only put her out at eating time, we used to live feed but it was wrong thing to do. At times we will also add just a little bit of hamburger meat to her kibble or even little prices of chicken. She loves that and will eat up almost everything kibble included. Thy are sweet and loving.

  17. Julianna says:

My Yorkie Bichon has tan curly hair with a white spot of hair on her forehead! Her name is Chanel. She is a very well behaved dog and shows genuine love for me and my family. After little training, she listens to command and knows where to go to the bathroom; outside or on the wee wee pad. The only thing she does is get very excited when someone comes to our house and jump around and pees! We love our Chanel so much!!!

    • Barbara Gunn says:

My yochon does the same thing. She will listen to commands and knows to go outside to pee. She will get very excited when company comes. I know at that point to let her out. I wish she would bark or something when she wants to go out. She will whine most of the time, but sometimes she whines just to go outside and not to pee.

    • Susie Smith says:

My yorkie bichon is 9 wks old I’m having trouble with trying to get her to use pee pad can you offer any suggestions? Thank you much I love her. Her name is Bella Rose.

  18. Susan says:

Our YoChon is 5 months old. We love her but she is so wild! She is constantly biting our feet, our pants, our hands and anything else she can get to! We have tried every kind of correction from popping her, newspaper, spray water bottle, and nothing works! We have had puppies before but never one that can be so hard headed!

    • jim says:

if you want your dog to stop bad behavior and to pay attention to you, you can do this. take a empty 2 litter plastic soda bottle and after you wash it out, put a hand full of penny coins in it and put the cap on tite. when your dog gets naughty hollar NO and shake the bottle at her and she will pay attention.

    • connie says:

my bichon/yorkie is 5 1/2 months, I started training her when she was 6 weeks, she too is very wild. I have tried everything, nothing works. help

  19. Aaron says:

My yorkchon is 13 weeks old and is already 7lbs. I’m guessing the Bichon side of him is dominant. (Don’t know anything about his parents). Does anyone know if he will be the size of a bichon? Between 12-20lbs? Or how big do you think he will be?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi, Aaron!
Being a Toy breed, an adult Yorkie Bichon should weigh about 8lbs at the most. So, my advice to you is to consult a vet and determine if your pup is overweight.

      • Aaron says:

He doesn’t look overweight at all. I can feel his ribs when I pick him up. He’s got a long tail and bigger paws. I’m taking him to the vet Thursday so we’ll see what they say!

    • Cheri says:

We have a male YORKCHON. He is 8 years old. He is 20 lbs. and has lost 4 lbs. but should be about 15/16 lbs per his doc! He is very spoiled! Lol! Best breed ever! His build is more the Bichon with face more like the yorkie but Bichon fur. He is a wonderful mix. Super cute! When grown out because he is mostly black with white chest and socks he looks like a baby bear cub. No lie! Good luck with yours!!! i agree with Alice, mine is very smart does tricks. But does not like to be left alone, so in your interest to get them used to short absence early then spread time out. Love toys to play with as well. Crate training was 1 st year. Now he just goes in there with door open to chill. Never had to use it as punishment!!

    • Debbie says:

My Yorkie Bichon is ) years old and weighs 17 lbs. The vet said he is of normal size and healthy. Love my guy so much! He is awesome!

  20. Alice Shrader says:

My Yorkischon is 10 years old. She is the most wonderful, energetic, smart, intelligent, and sweet dog that I have ever laid eyes on. I don’t think that I could ever and any other kind of dark but this breed.

  21. Alice Nauman says:

I just got our family a Yorkie Bichon puppy. Her name is Daphne Monroe she is 8 weeks old. This little girl has brought so much joy to our family even tho we just got her. She is doing great with house training and very smart. She makes us laugh because she thinks she is this big dog and barks at everyone but as soon as they show her attention she does her happy dance on her 2 hinds legs so funny. I would recommend this breed to any family. Very cute and low maintenance.

    • lydia economus says:

My little girl was sold to us as a MaltiPoo at 9 weeks. But the vet told us she had none of the characteristics of a MaltiPoo so we had her DNA tested. That’s how we found out she was a Bichon Yorkie mix. She is- without a doubt- the smartest and sweetest dog I’ve ever had. She suffers from a little separation anxiety but is otherwise a darling girl in every way. This is a very special breed!

  22. J says:

I have an adorable 6 month old Yorkie Bichon named Paris 🙂 she’s such a great puppy but very sassy at times. She has super thick curly hair which i love especially since she doesn’t shed. She loves walks, car rides & giving high fives. Paris has brought so much joy into my life. I highly recommend this breed.

  23. Claire says:

I have a beautiful Yorkie Bichon called Bella whom I love with all my heart. She has quite curly thick hair, most likely inherited from the Bichon side. She is very vocal, barks at anyone that drives up to the house or comes to the door. We like to think she’s a doorbell! She is such a lovely friendly dog and I couldn’t recommend this breed enough. No shedding is a huge bonus. However she does have a few problems with her skin, like constant scratching and some ear infections. These aren’t big problems but she does take medication in the summer months which gives her relief.

    • Debbie Collins says:

What kind of medicine do you give her during the summer. My borkie has skin issues far more than any other dog Ive ever had.

  24. Sue says:

My Borki Tiger is thirteen and a half years old. He is nearly blind but still happy and active. Since he was eight weeks old he has been a joy to have, such a sweet nature, he loves everyone especially children. He was very easy to train and does a few tricks. He makes me laugh every day. He has never shown fear during thunder storms or fireworks, nothing seems to bother him. I just adore him.

    • Julie says:

I have a darling Bichon/Yorkie, same age as yours, that just lost his best friend, “Toto” cairns terrier, alpha dog, 15 yrs old and she died. He is devastated and bored and does nothing but sleep. Makes me wonder if he is willing himself to death as she is gone. I walk him and try to play but I think eye/smell is going, also, but just wanted to check on others of this breed to see comparisons. He is a doll but now does not want to be social with any other dogs. He is now the alpha boy and nips at others bigger than him. Sad life for him. I would love answers, if possible. I walk him and try to play but she was playful and he is not without her. So sad….
      Thank you!!!

  25. TIFFANY says:

I have a borki that I love with all my heart she was a rescue a pup and never has gotten into trouble ever!!!!! She has been such a well behaved loving dog who loves to play with any other dogs as well as cats and is so good with children. She is although bigger than listed above you would never know it. she is the best dog I have ever owned more like family.
