The Shiranian, a cross between Shih Tzu and Pomeranian, is a famous designer dog. Due to its lovable personality and small stature, the breed is preferred by dog lovers. Despite its small size, this toy dog is lively and has a playful nature, which makes it more adorable. However, some of its physical as well as behavioral traits often vary, as inherited from the parents.

History and Origin

No detailed information about the origin of shih pom is available.

Temperament

Since the shih pom is friendly, these dogs have the propensity to become overly attached to their families, often remaining close to their owners. If separated or left alone for too long, these dogs suffer from depression and may become aggressive. Their fondness for human companionship is often highlighted when they start drawing attention until their owners cuddle or play with them. They are compatible with children and with other pets in the family. However, their easygoing and sociable nature makes them inappropriate as a watchdog.

Care

Exercise

The Shiranian needs sufficient exercise in the form of short, regular walks, as they are surprisingly energetic for their small size. However, too much strenuous exercise like extended hours of walking could be harmful. Provide your pet ample opportunities to play indoors or inside the fenced yards of your house.

Grooming

As they have a thick covering of fur, the Shiranian needs daily brushing to prevent mats and to keep dead hairs away. Bathe your pet with a mild soap only when it is necessary. Occasional bathing helps to keep its coat clean and shiny.

Health Problems

Unlike its parents, the Shiranian is not susceptible to numerous health conditions. However, due to its short height and comparatively smaller nasal passages, it may develop hip dysplasia and can suffer from breathing difficulties.

Training

A shih pom puppy has the innate ability to learn quickly, making it easier for you to train your pup. Start obedience, socialization, and crate training the dog at a young age. By accustoming them to leash training and grooming early, you can prevent any undesirable behavior in future. Always incorporate good training practices with patience and fairness.

Feeding

Provide your pet with a quality holistic dog food containing turkey, beef, salmon, herring, lamb, and chicken meat as the prime ingredient. Commercial dog foods having whole grains like oatmeal, barley, and rice can be given to your pet. You may occasionally include few fresh vegetables and fruits such as carrots, peas, blueberries, and apples in your dog’s diet.

Interesting Facts

These cute little pom tzus love to play with dog toys, as also with their owner’s toes and fingers.

Roose is my precious 12 week old puppy. He is so loving and playful. He does get very bad separation anxiety but we’re working on it. I introduced grooming at 10 weeks and although he shakes when it’s bath time- he knows it’s necessary. Plus i reward him with chicken so he associates baths with fun treats. He is already intuitive to know when I am depressed or feeling anxiety, which is what I originally got him for. He does have a few issues potty training, but I live in an apartment and he has to use potty pads instead of going outside. If I don’t place him on the pad every hour or so, he’s more likely to have an accident. Loves carrots and apples. Love belly rubs. Loves getting his picture taken. And most importantly…. LOVES me. So blessed to have my little fluffers

I want to buy a Shiranian pup for my adult daughter.ASAP. 732 664 3605. Text is best. Thank you.

  6. Patricia Stevens says:

I’m thinking of getting one. My partner and I work during the week days, but different hours so the pup would be alone to 5-6 hours a day. Is this breed okay with being left alone? He will get lots of love and attention otherwise!

  7. Hailee says:

I have a shiranian and he’s active than I’ve ever been. he almost don’t feel exhausted from running and playing. It’s a myth that this breed rarely bark. He’s a good guard dog (Barks louder than bigger dogs I have), though he can be bribed if a stranger offers him juicy meat. Chawie is a very picky eater so I always have a hard time feeding him. Very loving and protective to every family member. If he sees my mother scolding my sister he always protect my sister from my mom. haha

    • Elizabeth Hart says:

Hi. I have one that is 11 years old & at that age he loves to sleep. He loves company to come & very noisy when I have someone coming to work on the house. He loves to supervise the job. He also is so good ( I guess it is his age) for ignoring u when he wants to.
He has had a lot of medical problems – I know due to my husband feeding him. He has had 2 kidney stone operations so if I was u keep him or her on a vet diet. Other than that now he is doing great. No kitchen food should be given to them. Love ❤️ my Bubba.

  13. Elizabeth says:

Are these dogs good if you have allergies since they are half shitzu?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Elizabeth,
For those with allergies, it is recommended to have a hypoallergenic breed. Since the Shiranian is hypoallergenic, it is suitable for a household in which people are allergic to dogs.

  14. Jenny says:

Hello, I have a shiranian & I want to have a litter but it’s so hard to find a dog the same breed as him, what would happen if I mixed him with a miniature poodle?

  15. Morgan says:

I’m trying to train my pup to sit and stuff like that. I am her third owner and she’s not even a year old. Her other owners wouldn’t work with her. I’m only 19. How do I train her to sit without giving her a treat everytime

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Morgan,
Most people use bits of food like a tasty dog biscuit or dried liver for treats. Lavish praise or a playing session with her favorite toy can be used as a training reward. If you praise your dog in a low, happy voice, she will learn that it is a good thing. Now, to teach your pup to sit, use the following technique:
      • Squatting down next to your pup, place a hand on her chest, keeping the other hand behind her rear legs.
      • Say the “sit” command and apply slight upward pressure to her chest and against her rear knees, guiding her into the proper sitting position.
      • Reward her with lots of treats or praises once she is in the sitting position.

  16. Alnina Abarico Jayme says:

Hi, Im from the Philippines. Is it okay to bathe our Shiranian everyday? Or how often should we bathe our little pup…thanks.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi there,
While bathing your dog keeps its coat clean and shiny, it should not be more often than once a month for a dog with normal, healthy skin. Use a vet-recommended dog shampoo, or your Shiranian’s skin will become dry and be prone to dandruff.

  17. Shondelle Malbrough says:

I’m looking to buy me a pretty ???? like that

  18. Susan says:

I’ve had my little guy since he was 7 weeks old, he is now 2 years old. He is OVERLY loveable with us, and anyone who is in constant contact with him, but he appears vicious when unusual or uncommon people come in the house, even if they’ve been there a few times before, he will attack as a vicious dog. What can I do to break him of that?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Susan,
Speak to an experienced dog behaviorist to get instructions on stopping your dog’s aggression towards guests. Give him a safe space where he can go and remain calm when there are visitors in your house. You may have some treats and a leash placed by the door. It will help you in taking him to the safe place when a stranger shows up unexpectedly. Put your Shiranian in another room, or his crate with a Kong stuffed with treats. You may play some soothing music, as there are specialized CDs available for calming a dog’s nervous system.

  19. mary angeles says:

How do I get my little puppy to stop biting my toes and fingers?

    • Carmen Morrison says:

Give a high pitched yelp as its litter mates would take your fingers or lift your feet so they cant be nipped. You could also distract your puppy with a gentle game of tug. These dogs love to chew and love toys so Iwould advise a range of puppy toys that stimulate their mind as well as body.

  20. Lindsey robertson says:

My puppy was training really well but now she has started to pee on blankets and pillows if they are on the floor. Im not sure how to train her or get her to stop doing this in a positive way
