These are flat-faced dogs, with an oval to a roundish head, black eyes and nose, and long, floppy ears. They are covered with dense hair that often veils their face, eyes, and mouth. Their light stature, small legs, and a short, hairy tail has further intensified their cuteness.

Temperament and Behavior
Shinese dogs are often independent-natured. They would love to walk alone (rather than being carried by their owners) or enjoy running around wildly, and if you let it do this, you might lose the rein from your hands forever, ending up having an unruly pet. Hence, proper training is necessary for this dog which can help it develop as a friendly companion.
Though they are good with kids, enjoying to play with them, they might be wary of strangers, and even other larger dogs, attempting to resist them by barking – a trait inherited from their Pekingese parents. This makes them an excellent guard dog. They are extremely loyal and protective, loving to be in the company of their family members. Prolonged periods of separation might make them depressed and anxious.
Care
Exercise
Shinese loves to play outdoors. Do not stop them. The best is if you have a fenced yard, where you can release it from its leash, and allow it play freely to its heart’s content. These activities would release much of its day-to-day stress, and keep it happy and light-hearted. Also, take them out for a leashed walk. But better would be jogging, since they also love to run.
Grooming
The Shineses need regular grooming. Brush their fur once every day to avoid matting. You might want to consult a professional groomer every couple of months since they possess a thick coat.
Health Problems
They are otherwise healthy, except for a few issues like breathing problems (which is primarily because of their flat face), resultant asthma, and minor skin ailments.
Training
- This dog has domination issues. Never fail to train it to follow You, and make sure, it is never the vice versa. No matter you are going from one room to the other with your dog, or for an evening walk, let your puppy follow your footsteps. This is not merely to exercise domination on your pet, but would also help to keep it calm.
- Basic Training is extremely crucial since this breed is prone to get unruly and independent very easily. Teach them thoroughly the first commands first, especially those that you might often need to handle its whims, as in – ‘Halt,’ ‘Freeze,’ ‘Stay,’ ‘Sit,’ ‘Come Back,’ ‘Don’t,’ and so on.
- Always keep your Shinese busy with its favorite playthings. Interact with it as much as possible and take it out of meeting new people and their pets, visiting public places (on a leash), and so on. This training should not merely keep it mentally fit, but also help it learn to accept strangers calmly, keep its mind free of weariness or anxiety, and get enough of your much-desired company.
Diet/Feeding
1/2 to 1 cup of dry dog food daily, divided into two main meals is enough for this little breed.

Hello, I have this breed and I was wondering how to get her groomed at my groomers. She seems hot because she seems to pant a lot outside. Should I get her shaved….I think they call it the teddy bear haircut. Please advise.

Hi Susan,
Because your Shinese has a thick coat and is prone to overheating, you may consider shaving her, but make sure to discuss this with a vet first. If you plan on shaving your Shinese, you should follow these tips:
• Avoid shaving her close to the skin. A close shave will raise the risks of sunburn and can leave guard hairs embedded under the skin which might cause skin problems.
• Frequently take breaks to let the clipper blades cool down and be sure to use the lubricant to help the clippers stay cool.
• Leave at least an inch of hair while shaving her, as it will help in protecting her skin from sunburn.
