Temperament

Shepadoodles are extremely faithful and devoted to their families, making them ideally suited as companion dogs. These dogs with their easy-going, sweet and friendly nature are good with children as well as other animals. They do a great job watching their families, owing to their focused, alert, courageous, and protective disposition. Alerting the owners of an intrusion by constant barking is a behavioral trait commonly observed in them. Tender, patient, and family-oriented, they are always willing to please their owners. Like their poodle parent, they too have some funny instincts.

Care

Exercise

Active and energetic by nature, it loves doing outdoor activities. Keeping it in an apartment or closed home, makes it feel restrained and bored, which often induces harsh behavior. Devote some considerable amount of time to taking it for long walks every day. Allowing it to play inside a fenced park or yard is advisable to keep them satiated.

Grooming

It requires everyday brushing since its coat is prone to getting tangled and matted. Brushing also ensures that your pet’s coat is kept clean and free from mite or tick infections. Though it does not carry any dog odor, it can do with occasional baths. Cleaning its ears every week is recommended to keep away ear infections.

Health Problems

The susceptibility of a poodle and German shepherd mix puppy to canine diseases depends on the genetic traits of both the parent breeds and the offspring. A shepadoodle is known to suffer from some ailments including Von Willebrand’s disease, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, bloating, and skin issues.

Training

A smart breed by nature, it can pick up commands or instructions from the owners very quickly. To set control in your relationship with your pet and mold its behavior, train it early in its puppyhood by employing firm, fair, and consistent training methods. Teach it how to socialize by familiarizing with visitors and friends. Proper obedience training to the puppies should be provided to restrain any harsh and aggressive behavior in the future.

Feeding

Give your pet 3-4 cups of artificial dry dog food every day. A nutritious diet containing rich sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals should be enough to keep it healthy.

Interesting Facts

  • These multi-talented dogs are often used for assistance, herding, guarding, and police work.
  • Although they can tolerate every climate, they prefer to live in cooler areas.

I have a male 2 1/2 year old shepadoodle, and he does shed. He has more of a wavy coat, not pin straight or curly. I do find hair around the house quite often. My significant other and I do get him groomed every couple months when his hair gets really long and starts to look “shaggy”, but in the winter we typically just get it trimmed.

BTW, they are very, very smart and loyal. They are excellent for Service Dogs and such.

    • Karla says:

I can confirm that, at least until 6 months, they do. Our puppy hair has changed a lot, texture (for better) and color in 4 months.
