Famous for their ‘cute’ teddy-bear looks, the Pomapoo is a cross between the Poodle and the Pomeranian. They have inherited the facial features and skull-shape from either or both their parents.  The Pomapoos make an ideal toy dog, good for those suffering from allergy issues. Their adorable nature and pleasing disposition has made them immensely popular as pets in the recent times.

Temperament and Behavior

The pomapoos, with a smooth, social, caring, intelligent, alert and agile temperament, and being good with kids, and making even a great guard dog, guarding the owner’s family, are easy to be kept and cared for. However, these dogs that might easily be hurt for their tiny size and playfulness might get bored due to prolonged solitude. They are adaptable to all weather changes.

Care

Exercise

Considering their little size and lots of indoor activities, the pomapoos do not really need much exercise, but just in moderate amounts. Only a playing partner and taking the puppy for a little walk regularly would help burning their calories and keeping away behavioral issues.

Grooming

With the pomapoos having three different coat-types viz., straight & coarse and smooth & curly, with the former needing minimal grooming and the latter needing a little more including trimming, brushing and shampooed when necessary. Other than the rest of the basic care like keeping an eye for long nails, dental problems and infections, cleaning their reddish eye stains carefully every day is also important.

Health Problems

Being a new breed, these dogs rarely inherit diseases except generic problems like allergies, dental problems like teeth/gum infections, which shouldn’t persist if tooth-brushed regularly by a vet-approved paste. Eye infections/cataracts might also persist, which can be ward-off by regular healthy dry foods, or else, they should be taken to the vet promptly if signs appear.

Training

To get them accustomed to the family children and other pets, train them the moment they are brought home from the breeders, since then they can pick up tricks easily. Give them obedience training and also take the lead during walks/jogging/training so that they do not turn out to be dominating when adult.

Feeding

For the pomapoos, dry kibble is good, the best being the dog is fed with a brand dog food listed as ‘small bite’. Only 1 to 1 ½ cups of food a day can keep the pomapoo healthy. The food should be divided into two equal meals. If you want to feed it with veggies, you can try rice, or sweet potato, and for non-veg, you can choose a food ingredient that includes meat. Plenty of meat based foods are available like Bil-jac, blue buffalo, etc. at the pet store that are very healthy for your dog. However, do not feed milk.

Interesting Facts

  • The teacup pomapoo is a variation of the dog, which is even more smaller than the regular pomapoo.
  • Pomapoos love people and should never be kept outdoors or in kennels.
  • Pomapoos get along equally well with people of all ages, from kids to the elderly.

I have a two year old Pomapoo and she is the most beautiful, gentle, intelligent and loving dog I have ever had! She was so easy to house train and is very obedient. I love her with all my heart and so does my husband and three children.

She does yap with the mail man and when first let out the garden but is great on walks although sometimes gets a little nervous if walking by a road so I have to pick her up:)

I would highly recommend this breed!

I have an 11 year old pomspoo. I can tell you all about them. They are skittish up to a year old. After that they develop bad breath and overall have an odor to them. Ours got used to our other dog which is a cockapoo, but he is terrible with other dogs. Has little mans syndrome and will try to go after other dogs regardless of their size. I don’t recommend pomapoos

I really, REALLY, want a pomapoo, but I have a concern, how much food should I feed a pomapoo puppy that is 8 weeks old?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Mayline!
At 8 weeks of age, your Pomapoo pup should be given 3 scheduled meals a day. Once it reaches 6 months of age, switch to 2 feedings. Be sure to maintain the feeding plan through to adulthood. Choose a nutritionally balanced dry food to strengthen your pup’s bones and teeth, and properly develop its body functions.
