Temperament and Behavior

Mountain Mastiffs are calm, quiet, dignified, courageous, and intelligent dogs that have a carefree attitude about life. They enjoy living with their human family and are the happiest when participating in family activities. Although their size makes them appear fierce, they are kind and docile dogs that will not hesitate to protect their family when threatened by danger.

The Bernese Mountain-Mastiff mixes are known to exist in harmony with cats and other dogs. Additionally, they are gentle and friendly with children though they might injure small kids by inadvertently bumping over them. Therefore, the owner should keep watch over the interactions between a Mountain Mastiff and young children.

Care

Exercise

The exercise needs of an adult Mountain Mastiff can be satisfied with regular 20-30 minute walks. They do not make great jogging companions, as they tend to overheat and wear out their joints when running quickly. Puppies need free play, and they should be allowed to walk or play at their own convenience.

Grooming

Their coat should be brushed weekly using a rubber grooming glove, but daily brushing is required during the shedding season. For the prevention of bacterial infections, clean their wrinkles regularly by wiping with a damp cloth and then drying thoroughly. Brushing their teeth and trimming their nails are some of the other grooming requirements.

Health Problems

No health concerns related to the breed have been observed thus far. However, it can get affected by any of the diseases that are commonly seen in its parents. These include hip dysplasia, cancer, seizures, bloating, progressive retinal atrophy, and blood disorders.

Training

Mountain Mastiff is not suitable for a novice or timid owner. It needs positive reinforcement training, involving treats, praises, and hugs.

  • Obedience Training: Disciplining your Mountain Mastiff puppy is important for making a happy and healthy relationship. You can start with teaching simple commands including ‘heel’, ‘stay’, ‘sit’, and ‘recall’, as they provide an opportunity for bonding.
  • Socialization: Since Mountain Mastiffs have inherent protection instincts, they need to be well socialized with unknown people and pets. Otherwise, they can become shy or fearful of strangers, leading to biting.

Feeding

Mountain Mastiffs, being large dogs, need four-and-a-half to six cups of dry food per day.

I am looking forward to being a future owner to a mountain mastiff within this year! I am currently living in Anchorage Alaska. I’ve read the page and about them. I will study them further, but they just seem to be a great fit for me and my family at our home here and I know my family would be a great fit to own one ourselves! Please contact me at my email. I’d be happy for the opportunity to raise a pup around the spring or summer time! Thank you!
