The Maltichon looks like a soft, fluffy cotton ball, and is rapidly gaining popularity for its looks as also for its compatibility with other pets. A cross between the Maltese (standard, miniature or teacup) and the Bichon Frise, they have derived this doll-like appearance from both their parents that are also covered with tender, flossy hair.
The small-sized maltichon has a roundish face with two dark button-like eyes, hanging ears and a darkish/brownish triangular muzzle. Matching with its fluffy looks, they have a short, hairy tail, and their feet are comparatively shorter with respect to the body. Because of their handy size and good behavior, they make an ideal family pet that are very compatible with apartment life.

Temperament and Behavior

Maltichons are extremely gentle and docile-natured, and are not only good with children, but also enjoy spending time with them. Similarly, they are also comfortable in the company of other pets, or when strangers are around. However, they are fearless. They would bark, if they find or hear anything fishy. This is to alert its family. These natural traits make it a good watchdog.

They would keep you amused all day with its clownish personality. Like the bichon frise, intelligence and responsive are their characteristics. They make great companions, since they are quite fond of all the members of the family, and would often suffer separation anxiety when left alone for long hours. They are an active breed and wouldn’t mind playing all day around the house. Although, enough care should be taken when they are with kids, since they are too fragile, and any kind of rough handling can cause harm to this little one.

Care

Exercise

They have a low exercise requirement since maltichons are naturally busy all day. With the level of energy and enthusiasm this dog possesses, most of its daily need for exercise is met while it moves around your house. However, taking it out for a walk and jogging once a day for at least 15 minutes is also necessary to keep it happy. Take it out on a leash, as your dog follows you. You can also let it play without its leash if you have a protected, fenced yard.

Grooming

The maltichon needs moderate maintenance unlike the maltipoo, whose maintenance requirements are high. But do remember, your dog’s coat is its asset and needs that minimum care. Brush your dog every alternate day to retain gloss and silkiness, as also to ensure hygiene.

It is also advisable to clip your dog’s coat by professional hands once every 4-6 weeks. Also, clean their inner ears, tear stains to avoid common infections and allergies. Make sure that their nails are trimmed when long.

Health Problems

Like other cross breeds, no health problems have been reported that might specifically affect this breed, except those that are genetic or common with all breeds. However, do keep an eye for skin issues, to which most long-haired dogs are susceptible. They are sensitive dogs, and take them to the vet immediately if you find any issue related to its health.

Training

With their ability to learn quickly and get along with everyone, maltichons are dogs that are good for agility and obedience competitions. You can adopt your dog from the breeders or from puppy rescue, but begin socialization training soon after your adoption process. Else, it might be a little difficult to train your pup. Also, it might be somewhat difficult to housebreak (potty/toilet training) them. But do not be harsh to your dog. Rather, give them gifts, treats and praises with every success, and they would pick up tricks much faster, since they are already eager to please you.

It is also advisable that you use puppy pads to train your dog, since this is a normal trait with toy breeds, mostly those that are frequently nervous or excited. If you find it difficult to house train your pup, you can seek help from a professional or a puppy kindergarten.

Diet/Feeding

Provide your beautiful pet with the best quality food to assure complete nutrition. If you opt for dry dog foods, go for the ones that are meant for dogs of its size and energy, in general. The quantity is the same as is with all other dogs of its type.

Next month I’m going to adopt an Maltichon. Happy me! Living in Northern Germany, I found mine in Spain. Indeed, Spain, Malta (of course) and Portugal are the countries you most likely will find these little sweethearts. 🙂

I just bought what I was told was a Maltipoo $1095Cdn and find breeders paper where he has it down as a puppy Bichon Puppy #3 then says Bichon Maltese cross Tricolor male I paid this money as I wanted a Maltipoo more black the better and understood Maltipoo is cross of Maltese and Poodle. Love him he is adorable but don’t like fact that the breeder knew and 2as wrong to call him a Maltipoo when he waain’t. My mistake didn’t ask to see parents but she could have shown me any dog as the father or mother…..the puppy I got is an incredible sociable smart little guy who I had completely trained in 4 weeks and he had never been outside. Good luck with yours….

My husband and I just lost our dogs of 13 years and we are heartbroken. I looked online 2 scout dogs that would suit us and came across the multichon.. we did our research and decided that a Maltese Bichon Frise would be the perfect fit! We found a breeder close to us, went to put a deposit on her and now anxiously waiting until Macie will be ready to come to her new home….which will be April 20th…they were born February 23rd. I feel like a new Mom….think I should have a Baby Puppy Shower!
