Labrottie

The Labrottie is a large cross between two purebred dogs – the Labrador Retriever and the Rottweiler. It has the warm, intelligent, and friendly demeanor of a Lab combined with the calmness and protective nature of a Rott. Built for different types of dog sports such as obedience, tracking, agility, and retrieving, the Labrottie has a muscular body with a slightly broad head, somewhat arched neck, and may have a docked tail.

Temperament and Behavior

The Labrador retriever and Rottweiler mix dogs are affectionate with their owner as well as other members of the house and are quite family-oriented. These devoted and docile animals are often seen following their owner and always trying to please their family with a clownish behavior. They might become destructive if you keep them separated for long periods. The Labrotties are not known to welcome strangers or other unfamiliar pets due to their territorial instincts. This makes it necessary to expose them to different people as well as sights and sounds. These pets get along fine with kids if raised with them.

Care

Exercise

Since it has a working heritage, the breed requires a fair amount of regular activity to keep it happy. Even though it remains somewhat inactive indoors, it will appreciate a 30-minute walk or a romp in a fenced yard. It also enjoys one or two sessions of interactive games including retrieving a ball, which it will happily carry in its mouth. Do not over-exercise your pet as its double coat could cause its body to become excessively hot.

Grooming

When it comes to grooming, your Labrottie needs a weekly brushing using a firm-bristled brush. This will help in not only removing the loose hairs but also distributing the skin oils much more evenly. To keep it looking clean as well as smelling good, you need to bathe your Rottweiler-Labrador mix once or twice every two months. If its nails do not wear down naturally, trim them down once a month.

Health Problems

Like all big dogs with a deep chest, the Labrotties are susceptible to bloat or torsion. Therefore, do not feed your dog a single large meal, neither encourage it to eat rapidly nor make it exercise vigorously after a meal. Moreover, this breed is sometimes affected by hip and elbow dysplasia, bone cancer, PRA, canine cataracts, and allergies.

Training

This breed is not suitable for those owners who lack confidence or do not have the time to supervise and train their dogs.

  • Obedience Training: Keep the commands short, one or two words at the most. You may use clicker training that is based on positive reinforcement, consistency, and cooperation to curb its natural aggressive behavior.
  • Socialization: Carefully introduce your Labrottie to other dogs, which will help it to learn to coexist with its new companion. You can organize “play-dates” with your sister’s puppy or your friend’s dog and make sure the experience is a pleasant one for your pet.

Feeding

Apart from feeding your dog on canned food and dry kibble, you could provide it with bones and raw meat. Feed your pet a quality dog food that has at least 30 percent protein, 20 percent crude fat, and less than 4 percent fiber. An adult Labrottie’s regular dry food requirement is 4 to 5 cups.

Looking for labrottie pup. Lost my labrottie on 12/31/19 great dog .

  2. David C Smith says:

My Labrottie is only 2.5 months old and plays with my older Lab/Chow mix………. What a difference between the two……….. DEEZEL already knows his name, potties outside, sits, starting to lay down, loads up for his crate and car rides, loves to chew on things (YIKES), starting to try clicker training.

I think he will be one of the best dogs that I have ever owned…….. Almost 20 pounds and growing like a weed……. Solid black except for a white patch on his chest and white on the bottom of his feet……… 2nd pick of a litter of 11 puppies………. I got DEEZEL and helped re-home 4 more of his brothers and sisters…………. One went home to a 16 year old boy who found his needle-in-the-haystack Christmas wish (A Labrottie)………… I am glad his puppy is on their farm near Nashville………… They drove 3 hours to come and get him (They had a Labrottie when the boy was a small child)……..I felt like Santa Claus must feel every year.

My husband and I got our first dog and it was a lab rottie puppy. She was the cutest dog….all black. She was so smart. Well-behaved and very protective. And I am always searching for another one just like her. My husband is a veterinarian and he loves the combination just as much. The Combination of these two dogs breeds seems to brings out the best of their qualities. I think and from what I’ve read everyone seems to have a similar experience. So I’m always on the lookout for lab Rottie puppies. So if anyone knows of any litters coming soon or even in 6 months. Please let me know. I will go to any state to acquire another labrottie.

VERY protective especially when men approach me too quickly yet listens to me immediately and he backs off and is calm. The perfect large baby

I had one his name was Chulo , the best dog ever. He was super smart loved him so much. He was great with my grandkids. Very patient even played dress up with my granddaughters . He liked to take the leash from my had and walk himself home after our walks. He loved his stuffed animals never tore them up. He would know to move around the house when I was cleaning the floors. Really an amazing dog someday when I’m not grieving for him anymore I will get another.

  15. DB says:

I have a 10month old Rott/Lab mix…..I got him from a rescue back in March. He’s my best bud and a big baby. They do need structure and a strong owner. But, they are loyal to the bone and will be a good companion. They are smart and very protective of their family.

  16. L says:

I just brought a rottweiler lab its 8 weeks old and has the runs with the last week any one known wat could be making the lie that

    • DB says:

Have you taken it to the Vet yet? It might be a change in diet compared to what it was being fed by the people you got him/her from. But, I would also ensure you take it to a vet to ensure it doesn’t have Parvo.

    • Laine says:

My labrottie always had the runs as a pup, took him to the vet many times and they couldn’t find anything wrong. I had him on grain free food and switched him to food with grain in it and it got a lot better

  17. Noah says:

I’m a cat person. I inherited my lab/Rott is mix from a poopy roommate. They left, the pup stayed. Best. Deal. Ever. She was 6 months and I didn’t speak dog so we struggled at first. However after some puppy training classes/play bonding time, we tight AF. I love my Ursa girl. She’s sweet, calm, loving with a BS detector they hasn’t failed me yet. (Every date my dog didn’t like turned out to be a jerk!) She active so I had to be active, now we both healthy AF. (I dropped 60 pounds.) She plays so well with “human puppies.” She also great with reading my emtions and offers so much support and learning to be her “Alpha” has helped me develop my own leadership skills. Getting her butt on a Schedule got my butt On a schedule. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me and she doesn’t even realize.

  18. Alice Harrison says:

My pup Oscar is 6 months old. He is so friendly and just wants to love and please EVERYBODY! Biggest goof ball but so lovely and gentle at the same time. I have raised a mixture of many dog breeds but Labrotties are definitely one of the best natured dogs!

  19. Chris Lehner says:

Bandit is my 6 yr old male. I’ve had him since he was 30 days old (due to flea infestation, I took him home). 3 yrs ago, out of nowhere, he started sleeping on the corner of my bed, near my head. Less than 6 months later, I was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. My Drs believe Bandit sensed something was wrong. He’s the most loving, obedient, easily trainable, well mannered dog I have owned. Protective of my grand children, loves the cats (but seriously scared of kittens) and accepting of visitors. I don’t think I would ever want any other breed of dog.

  20. Adria says:

  21. Holly says:

We have a LabRottie that we picked up at a shelter a month ago. He is a year old. What a wonderful dog. He doesn’t bark. When he’s in the house, he sleeps most of the time. Outside he is hilarious. Leaping jumping over snow banks, and playing keep away. For a dog, he shows so much compassion. We were told he was lab and shepherd, but not so.

  22. J says:

We just adopted from local pound lil 3 month old labrottie! She is about 30 pounds. We are all excited to have her in our family.

  23. John says:

We have a LabRottie who is 75 lbs at 6 months. Best dog I’ve ever had. He’s a very playful boy… loves to play keep away with anything he can grab that he knows he shouldn’t but he’s brilliant and knows when game time needs to be over. I’ve never seen a dog better at understanding words I absolutely love his protective nature and look forward to when we can leave the house without confining him to a pen in the corner of a room. He can be destructive when he gets bored, but grab his favorite toy or treat and he snaps out if it instantly. I absolutely love this dog

    • Thomas Franklin says:

      This is exactly my dog!!!!!!!!

    • Joe says:

Hi! Everybody here talks about how great is their Labrottie, as mine is, of course. He’s 3 months now, but we adopted with only 6 weeks. Is sweet and funny and full of energy half of day and the other half is sleeping… I just want to know how normal is for a puppy biting hard (really hard, feet and clothes) when he knows I’m gonna leave the house and only stop when I don’t move at all, he hold my feet and lie on them. Sometimes is fun but other times gets me scared. He goes to the training school once a week. Have had 2 clases. But leaving the house is complicated. He’s my first dog and I love him. Please tell me is normal at his age ????

      • Lisa Toscano says:

Lol.. omg this is my Thor .. he unties my shoe strings every morning when I’m trying to go for work.. hits my pant leg .. he doesn’t want me to go… he’s so sweet ????????❤️

  24. Cynthia Flores says:

This actually helped me out a lot. My labrottie is gentle, confident and quiet, but at the same time is on guard. He can be playing one minute and the next if he senses or hears something out of the ordinary he’s attentive and alert. He’s s only 3 and a half months but looks like he’s about 7 or 8 months. He’s growing intensely fast and is highly Intelligent.I noticed the puppy chow food is not fulfilling to him so if an adult labrottie demands four to five cups during feeding time I’m sure mine needs a more satisfying food as a pup. As a single parent of 4 kids my youngest being 2 this breed is perfect for the gentle nature yet exceeds my expectations for the protection. He can be destructive and does not like to be alone but with discipline we can master this. We love our Labrottie.
