The Labradane, a large cross between the purebreds Labrador Retriever and Great Dane, is known for its sweet, gentle, and affectionate nature. It is a strong, sturdy dog with a well-muscled body, broad head, pronounced stop, dark nose, medium-sized floppy ears hanging close to the cheek, firm, muscular neck, and a high set tail.

Temperament and Behavior

The Labradane, characterized by a pleasant disposition, makes a great companion desiring to be closely bonded to its human family. Always eager to please its owner, the dog craves for praise and affection. It will welcome your visitors unless it sees something suspicious. Besides its protective nature, its imposing appearance can be intimidating for an unwanted stranger.

A Labradane is well disposed toward kids and other pets if raised with them. However, its size can cause problems, as it can accidentally knock over a small child. Make sure that you teach your kids how to approach and get along with these big dogs safely.

Care

Exercise

Even though Labradanes are quiet indoors, they need regular 30-minute walks or interactive playing sessions in a secured area. They should not be overly exercised especially when young since puppies are vulnerable to bone and joint problems.

Grooming

Their coat needs regular brushing with a firm-bristled brush, as it helps in keeping the fur healthy and clean, thereby reducing the number of baths they need. Brush their teeth 2-3 times a week and trim their nails once a month. When their ears show signs of infection, clean them with a pH-balanced solution.

Health Problems

The Great Dane Lab mixes are affected by certain health issues including elbow and hip dysplasia, improper development of bones and joints, PRA, epilepsy, cataracts, gastric torsion, and acute moist dermatitis.

Training

Start training the Labradanes early because their sheer size could make them difficult to control by the time they become adults.

  • Socialization: To prevent your pet dog from exhibiting aggression or fear when meeting strangers, properly socialize Labradane puppies with unfamiliar people and pets. You may check in your neighborhood for groups that take their dogs to the park or ask the dog walkers to join you on the route.
  • Teaching your dog to chase and fetch: Encourage your pet to go after a ball, Frisbee, or stick by tossing it a short distance. When your dog goes for it, reward with praises and treats. If your dog refuses to bring the toy back, you can use another object and throw it in an opposite direction. This will help in familiarizing your pet to the idea of going back to you once it has grabbed the object. After your dog has mastered this, try calling your dog back and ask it drop the object.

Feeding

The Labradane needs four and a half to six cups of dry dog food per day.

I just adopted a “black lab mix” and he’s about 14 weeks and 19 pounds. He gained 5 lbs in less than 20 days. When I look at pictures of Labradanes he looks identical to them. Trying to figure out if his size is too small to consider him being a Labradane. Google images he looks just like them. Just trying to figure out if his size sounds accurate.

      • Tim McDonald says:

Did you ever find out if you had a labradane? Now that it has been a few months, how much does he weigh now?

My heart goes out to you. I lost my Great Dane black lab rescue Brady August 19th 2019 and I feel exactly the same. The sadness and emptiness seems to get worse with time. He was my very best friend and hero. I loved him more than anything in the whole world even more than dear friends and family for he was both. If you find more than one let me know and also I’ll keep my eyes open for you as well. Best of luck in our search. I’d love to send you a picture of Brady and see one of Yuma so I’ll have an idea of what type of kind face you’re looking for in these gentle giants.

My husband bought what was supposed to be a 8 week old border collie pup. He is now 18 weeks old and already weighs in at 25+lbs. I always joke with my husband that someone slipped him a Dane puppy. Then I saw the picture of the lab/Dane mix and they are my dog. Every little detail is the same. So much for a medium size dog…but I would not trade him. He has the best disposition.

    • Kyla says:

        Hello,

I’m contacting you in reference to purchasing a Labradane puppy. I am in a wheelchair and the combination breed is easy to train and work with. We had one for several years and our daughter took him with her when she moved out west, so we know what we are getting into in regards to size and energy level. I would like to get one for my husband as an anniversary gift in the beginning of June 2019. I’m not sure what you do to start the process. Please get back to me with a price and whatever else I need to do.

        Thank you

  16. Sarafina says:

We adopted a 9 week old puppy in April, the vet said purebred Labrador Retriever but at under 5 months old, he’s already 50 lbs and SUPER tall, everyone says he’s just “leggy” but I’m starting to look at labradane pictures and he looks a LOT like many of them. Only time will tell as he continues to grow but he has most of the crazy lab energy so far and not much of the docile Great Dane so we will just have to wait and see.

    • Jana jones says:

    • cynthia ebert says:

I can only recommend Cesaer Milan’s book for “raising the best puppy ever” or something like that. We had a Lab/Great Dane mix when the mix was simply a mistake. There was no design in it except on the dogs’ parts. She was the BEST of all dogs. More gracile than a Labrador but not near how tall a Great Dane is. We always thought that the Great Dane took that Lab-crazy right out of the pup. She was never jumpy. She will be easy to train. They are great. She wasn’t much of a watchdog. She loved everybody. My husband called her a ‘black lab-shedder mix’. She did shed a lot. Everyone has their favorite choices of foods. Look into some premium brands in the pet stores. Try and eliminate grains. The paleo diets and the ones which try and keep closest to their pure wild diet seem so much better. I found one food I could not afford: Acana Pacifica Dog Food. There’s something wonderful about that food for the animals. I don’t have dogs anymore, only a couple of broken cats (we’re all broken or disabled in my house). I can tell a lot about the pet by its fur. I was amazed that within 24 hours of eating Acana, their fur turned to silk. I’m not kidding. I have BARF’ed our dog too. That is Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Some people don’t believe it’s good, worried about e-coli and such. But in the wild, dogs eat all kinds of carion that’s already putrefying. Raw bones are soft and not brittle. Only in cooking do they get brittle. You can check that out too. Half the fun is in the investigation. You will eventually find a good food for your dog. I caution against what you find on the shelves in the grocery stores. So many dogs have hair/skin problems and digestive problems, and grocery store shelf foods are not as nutritionally sound as others in the Pet Stores – or others healthy diets you might investigate and find even better. Bil-Jac was one of the first “good” nutritional foods for dogs. Way – way back in the day when I had a Great Dane, she ate Bil-Jac. She thrived on it.

God bless you and your new family dog! Your son will love him.
