Temperament and Behavior

Despite its large size, the Golden Saint’s calm, quiet, and tolerant attitude makes it a fabulous family friend. Devoted and willing to please its human family, the dog is also patient and playful with children. However, its size is a matter of concern for families with young children, as it might accidentally knock over and injure them.

It also mingles well with other pets, especially if raised together. Although not aggressive by nature, the Golden Saint’s protective instincts will be triggered if there is any threat to its family. Moreover, its huge, bulky frame is a deterrent to any burglar or attacker.

Care

Exercise

Since the Golden Retriever St Bernard mix is not an agile breed, it will do well with a moderate amount of regular exercise. The dog does not make a great jogging companion, particularly during hot weather because it may have heat exhaustion. During such extreme conditions, stay indoors and teach your dog tricks that will engage its mind. Moderate daily walks and short playing sessions in the yard will satisfy its exercise requirements.

Grooming

Regularly brush your Golden Saint’s coat using a pin brush and if it develops mats, use a detangler solution to gently demat with a comb. Occasionally give your pet dog a bath with a quality dog shampoo that keeps its coat from becoming dry. Proper dental hygiene, ear, and nail care are some of its other grooming needs.

Health Problems

Golden Saints can be affected by any of the health issues including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cataracts, epilepsy, bloating, allergies, heart conditions, and blood disorders.

Training

These giant dogs can be stubborn at times, and so it is crucial to start training them early, while they are easily manageable.

  • Socialization: Take your Golden Saint puppy to the dog park where it can be introduced to other dogs and their owners, children, as well as other pets. Let your pet become familiar with different experiences such as the sight and sound of traffic, as this kind of familiarization is necessary for your pup’s social development and wellbeing.
  • Water Fetch Trick: This dog, like its parents, is fond of swimming. Therefore, take your pet to a lake, pool, or beach during the summer months when it will enjoy playing a game of water fetch. Throw a stick into shallow waters and reward your dog with treats every time it successfully ‘fetches’ the stick.

Feeding

A Golden Saint needs 4.5-6 cups of quality dry dog food on a daily basis.

My Golden saint “Chewbacca” has been a vital part of our family for almost 10 years now. He was a pound rescue, about 3 years of age when we adopted him. I had owned a Couple of Golden Retrievers over the years, but this was a first for a Golden Saint hybrid. I fell in love with the breed the minute I laid eyes on Chewy.
Alas, Time in Dog years is much faster than in human years, and my dear old friend is fading. Every day the climb up the stairs gets slower and more painful. The look in his eyes when he can no longer make it up from the basement is absolutely heart breaking. I know his time is short, and I know its going to tear me up to let him go. I would like to keep this breed in our family, and hope to add another pup while Chewy is still with us to “show him the ropes” so to speak. I have noticed that when Chewy is around pups, he does seem a little more perky and energetic. perhaps a new companion may add some time to his stay with us. If you have any Pups coming available , I would be interested in adopting one.
Thank you for your time, and for producing what may very well be the best breed of dog ever..

Wondering if you still have a litter planned for this year? We had to say a painful goodbye to our golden saint And would love to find another, just can’t beat their temperament and cuddly love. I have no problem road tripping a few states to find one as I have been searching all over for a pup. Or if you know of any currently available would be greatly appreciated.

I have the most wonderful Golden Saint. Never chewed, easy to toilet train (actually has a bladder of steel), I had to teach him to bark and the most loving personality. I am so blessed to have him in my life.
