Temperament and Personality

Though docile, the Golden Retriever and Cocker spaniel mix are affectionate, friendly and loving, just like both their parents. They share a great bond with their family members and might even be inclined to a particular member of the family or many of them. Since they have an amicable nature, the Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel mix shares a great rapport with the members of kids as well as other dogs. They could either be like the Golden Retriever, having a good rapport with strangers or inherit the Cocker Spaniel’s trait and display a little wariness at the sight of an unfamiliar face. Though they have a calm nature, sudden or unfavorable noise might startle them.

Care

Exercise

Having high exercise requirements just like their parents, they need to be worked out at least for an hour every day. You can take them on two brisk walks and even arrange for sufficient playtime. A spacious home with a fenced yard is more favorable for them than a small cozy apartment. Though it adjusts well in a warm climate, do not exercise it when it is very hot outside and ensure that they remain in shaded areas with a lot of water to keep them cool especially in the summer months.

Grooming

Since they have a tendency to shed, a daily brushing using a comb with firm bristles is essential to prevent any mat and tangles. Bathe it once in a month or whenever it gets dirty. Wiping its ears and eyes, brushing its teeth and trimming its nails are the other essential grooming needs.

Health Problems

Though a relatively hardy breed, it might inherit the health conditions of both its parents like hip dysplasia, cataracts, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy, and allergies.

Training

These intelligent dogs would not be difficult to train provided they have a firm master to handle them well.

  • The Golden Cocker Retriever needs to be obedience trained, particularly on commands like “Sit”, “Stop, “Come” and “Go” so that it may listen to you always and not have a will of its own.
  • Leash training the Cocker Spaniel-Golden Retriever mix would help you have a control over it whenever you take it out.

Feeding

Good quality dry dog food is essential to help keep your dog in good shape. You can even add extra vitamins, proteins, and fat to its diet by giving it boiled, properly cooked vegetables and meat. However, consult the doctor once before doing so, and make sure you do not overfeed your pet.
