The German Shorthaired Lab is a cross between the German Shorthaired Pointer and the Labrador Retriever. These large-sized dogs are rare and are not found easily. They are very adaptable to their surroundings and can easily fit themselves in all climates. They share in common a lot many characteristics of both their parent breeds. They are slender, tall and slim with short water-resistant coat. The shape of their skull is wide with long, hanging ears, deep, almond-shaped eyes, with mostly a long muzzle.

Temperament and Behavior

The GSL is a large breed that would need a lot of space to stretch. They are energetic and playful and would play with children and at the end of an active day, they would want to curl up next to you. They are possessive by nature and would guard their families, thus making a great guard dog.

Though it is good with strangers, but as a watchdog, it is alert, and would start to bark immediately as soon as it sees anything strange or unknown person around. They have an even temperament and are always happy and gamesome, and are intelligent enough to understand what their owners expect of them. These dogs are best suited in apartments that are spacious, or have a yard for them to play.

Care

Exercise

The German Shorthaired Lab needs a lot of exercise. Their exercise requirement can be fulfilled by running and long walks. Take your dog out for long walks and jogging every day. This should keep a balance between their physical and mental health. These energetic canines have a high playing instinct, and their thirst can only be quenched if they get lots of time to run around and play. Hence, houses with a big space or a yard are apt for them. However, be sure to untie it from the leash only if you have an open yard.

Grooming

Grooming the GSL is simple. This is mainly because the coat of the dog is short, and already silky. Brush the coat 1 to 2 times a week, so as to retain its natural sheen. Bathing and shampooing depend on requirement, though you can dry shampoo your dog to keep it clean and odor-free. Its ears are floppy. Clean them occasionally to ward off possibilities of infection.

Health Problems

Generally, crossbreeds do not suffer much from health issues, though genetic factors should also be taken into account. Ask your GSL breeder about the health history of your dog’s parents.

General dog health problems that frequently affect other breeds of dogs in general should also be kept in mind. These include elbow hip dysplasia, skin allergies, infections, etc.

Training

Train your German Shorthaired Lab to socialize when it is still a puppy. Because this dog has a hunting or retrieving instinct, especially inherited from its Labrador parent, help your dog get accustomed to other pets and also with people like your friends and relatives.

Keep it in a leash while you go out for a walk or jog, and do take the lead. This will make you the leader of its ‘pack’. The intelligent dog is ready to pick up tricks and training quickly mainly because it is ready to please its master. They are also good at jumping and fetching. Teach them retrieving games like ball games or Frisbees.

Diet/Feeding

Provide them with all kinds of general dog foods that a large dog of its size and energy level needs. Raw foods (mostly bones and meat) are always good for your dog. However, if you stick to kibbles, make sure that the kibble is of high-quality and the food is meant for such large dog breeds.

Interesting Facts

  • With the behavioral traits of its German shepherd parents, the German Shorthaired Labs can work as good guide dogs.
  • If the German Shorthaired Lab inherits the abilities of its Pointer parent, it might well become a sniffer dog that can be used by the police to discover illegal narcotics, and track down intruders, or other criminals.

Hi I am interested in getting a GSP/Lab mix pup. I am located in CA but would be willing to make a trip out of picking one up. Ideal colors would be white and brown (with or without spots). Want to train as a hunting dog as well as having it be a family companion. Any future litters unaccounted for please let me know!

    • Austin Krokos says:

We have a litter of these pups due in Early June. Our female is the black lab, and the GSP is the stud. We’re in Durango, CO so you might want to come visit in August!

I am new to this website, but if you have questions, how would you typically contact one another on here?

    Hi-

I”m in love with these dogs but haven’t had any success finding a breeder in Southern California. At least a breeder that I’m certain isn’t running puppy mill. I’m in Orange County California and would be willing to do a little driving to find a good puppy. Any suggestion, recommendations would be welcome.

    Thanks

  6. Jan says:

I thought I was adopting a 6 month old chocolate lab. I drove 7 hours in a blinding rain to pick him up. When I arrived, I looked at him and knew immediately he wasn’t a pure bred chocolate lab. As soon as I got him back home, I took him to the veterinarian’s office. After much research, we learned that Zeke is a GSP/Chocolate lab mix. He is my baby!! He definitely has a very high drive, yet he is as soft as a teddy bear when it comes to my cats and grandchildren. He’s been known to share his bed with the cats. My husband and I feel truly blessed because our Zeke turned 12 years old back in April of this year. You’d think he was still 2 years old. We do make sure he has frequent vet checkups to make sure he’s still in great health. But these dogs are FANTASTIC companions!! If you’re wanting a guard dog, this dog is not for you, But if you want a total love bug who will snuggle up with you, or do silly things to make you laugh if he senses you’re not feeling so great, this breed is awesome! I can’t say enough great things about this mixed breed.

  18. Crystal says:

Wanting to know if this breed sheds a lot like a lab?

    • Karen says:

Yes! They have a downy undercoat which sheds and at the change of season they do “blow their coat.” You can see chunks of fur ready to go and pluck them off. Best dog I ever had was a German shorthair/lab mix. Sweet, loyal, smart, and a clown. Lost him to cancer this past summer. He was 11. It broke my heart.

      • Marjie "Dove" Emery says:

So sorry that you lost your friend/furry child. My last service dog was purebred lab, and he passed away 5/6/18
And I am still heartbroken with missing him.
I got a new service dog/recruit that is a 1 year old GS/L and boy does the puppy show! Also her kriptonite is squirrels! She all but drags me with arms and legs flapping behind her if she sees a squirrel on the next block!!! Like I said, she is only a year old and is training.
She is VERY smart! In 2 days I switched all of her commands to German, and she has near perfect recall of those commands. In 1 day, I taught her that when it’s time to go to the dog park, she needs to bring me the leash. She brings me that darned leash 5-7 times a day! She loves being at the dogpark where she can run, chase balls/frisbee/other dogs
And I am happy to let her run it all out.
But I wonder if she will ever stop with the squirrel attacks?

My name is Justin Woods I live in Mobile, Alabama. My wife and 3 kids had a chocolate German shorthaired pointer and lab mix named Bella. Best dog in the world she would not sleep unless she was touching me somehow in our bed. Anyway she just turned a year old and my neighbor purposely run her over because she broke her small chain and chased them down. The only vehicle she would act that way against. We have been looking for about 6 months now for another Bella. I will drive to where you are for one of them ma’am. How much would it cost us? We really need another Bella. I’ll send a pic of her also if We get a response which I really hope we do.

  21. Irene says:

I am looking for a Lab mix and your German Shorthaired Pointer lab mix looks like the puppy I want ! Ado you have any Female puppy’s to adopt or buy .

  22. Dorian says:

Four years ago I adopted a Lab cross from our local shelter – a year and a half old female. One look at her and I knew she must be crossed with a GSP. She has that tall, slender build, deep chest, beautiful head, longer ears than a lab. She’s all black – well, at first glance you think black, but she’s really got a lot of chocolate brown in her coat. And silky soft, as if she never lost her puppy fur. What a wonderful dog! I trail ride my horse with her, and she is great. She is so affectionate, loves everyone especially children. She’s going to be hard to replace when her time comes, but now I know where to look.

  23. Ecoy says:

We found a litter of pups in the woods and did a DNA test to see the breed before we re-homed them and they were GSP and Lab mix- We kept the only Male. According to the vet they are about 4 months old now. 3 of the pups are white with spots and markings on their ears while one is mostly Chocolate. They are very smart dogs. All have good homes, I had never heard of this mix before so I started doing research to know how to train my Chunky Monkey.

My GSH Lab is almost 2 and she is really starting to calm down.
One hood run or swim a day is good and she’s trying to control the jumping when she sees new people. Really a sweet dog, all about the excersize in the am to set the tone for the day.

  32. Shana says:

I am a disabled veteran and was just donated a GSL. She is beautiful, smart, playful, energetic, and gets along with my cats as well as my small dogs. She is 4 months old and weighs about 25 pounds. My Sadie Belle will already sit and wait until I tell her to eat anything! I have never spanked her and won’t ever. Her training is strictly play or treat endorsed because she is very sensitive to even raised voices. I had never heard of her breed until I got her, but I’ll never go to any other breed again! Also, she was born on my birthday, so that makes her extra special to me. ❤️??

  33. paul says:

i recently got a gsh lab pup. Central IL. They still had one pup to give away at the time that I got my Biscuit. Great great dog!

  34. Andre says:

I rescued a dog 2 years ago which was advertised as a pure Lab. The moment I saw her I knew she wasn’t pure (I’ve had 3 pure Labs). Researching and seeing pics. I know now without a doubt she is a Short haired Pointer/Lab mix.
I am at the stage where I am looking for a pup, a Short haired Pointer/Lab mix. I’d really like to find one.
    Any ideas?
