The German Sheprador is a breed of dog created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a German Shepherd. A large-sized dog with either a long or a heavy compact stature, the sheprador has some common traits of both its parent breeds. Its head is similar to that of a Lab but has a comparatively long muzzle with dark brown eyes and soft floppy ears. It has medium-sized feet just like its shepherd parent while its tail can either be round with tapering at the tip, or long and fluffy.

Temperament and Behavior

The sheprador’s friendly, lovable, and loyal disposition along with its love for human interaction comes from the Labrador Retriever breed. Being sociable and devoted by nature, it enjoys spending time with its owner and other family members. It is gentle and patient with children and love playing with them. If trained properly, the puppies can learn to mingle freely with other pets.

This even-tempered dog, valued for its intelligence and kindness, makes an outstanding family companion. If it is often kept separated for long hours, it suffers from boredom and may show signs of separation anxiety. Its distinctive personality, marked by its attentiveness and alertness, makes it a potent protector suitable for guarding and watching.

Care

Exercise

As a highly energetic breed, the shepradors need lots of mental as well as physical stimulation to keep them from boredom. Long daily walks will suit them fine, as also running and playing in fenced yards and parks. They will also enjoy interactive playing sessions with a ball, stick or Frisbee. Thus, they are well suited to active and committed owners.

Grooming

These average shedders need moderate maintenance with regular brushing to keep their fur healthy and shiny. A shedding blade could be used to get rid of dead hairs during the shedding season. Check their eyes frequently for any possible discharge, which you can wipe off using a moist tissue paper. Their transparent nails are hard to clip. You can take the help of a professional groomer.

Health Problems

Reportedly, the German Shepherd Lab mix is prone to some health conditions that are common in its parent breeds. Therefore, watch out for elbow and hip dysplasia, degenerative eye disorders, allergic infections, diabetes, and neurological conditions.

Training

These are fast learners and can master new tricks in no time, which makes training them relatively easy. Innovative training methods supported by rewards are something they will enjoy. Socialization, obedience, and foundational agility training should start early. Providing lots of plush toys will keep them from exhibiting some destructive behaviors like biting and chewing household items.

Feeding

You can provide your sheprador with all types of dog foods that are usually given to large dog breeds, except salmon, beef (especially veal), and chicken, which may cause skin allergies in your pet. Since they tend to gain weight easily, always avoid overfeeding. 3-4 cups of good quality dry kibble supported with an adequate quantity of fresh water are sufficient.

Interesting Facts

  • These dogs are great swimmers just like their Labrador and German Shepherd parents.
  • They are often used for search and rescue, police work, tracking, retrieving, racing, and agility.
  • The Labrashepherds love the winter but dislike hot weather.

I was fostering one of these big beauties, and fell in love. We decided to adopt this big gentle giant and are completely smitten with him. He is 6 years old, so i cannot comment on the puppy temperament.
He stands about 28 inches high (measuring from his back) and is about 110 lbs. He is very calm when inside but extremely active and agile when taken outside. He does well running free and stays within his boundaries.
He is very mild mannered and gets along perfectly around other dogs. He is WONDERFUL with kids and cannot seem to get enough of them.
He does well during the day while we are away at work without a crate, generally 8-10 hours. Otherwise he loves riding in the car, so we take him everywhere we can.

We love our 5 month old Little Girl sheprador, she is smart lovable and eager to please, so glad we rescued her.

My sheprador is super friendly, very good listener, most lovable dog… isn’t the most athletic dog he’s kinda chunky and gets tired easily but he’s only like 60 pounds and full grown. His mom wasn’t a small 35 pound lab. I was forced to get him neutered early at 4 monthes because the adoption shelter made me or I had to pay a fee but I had him since he was two monthes and seems to Ben the same chill mellow dog always down for an adventure and never bothered by anything.

We have an almost 2 yr. old female yellow lab in heat now and after reading the feedback on Sheprador breeds am going to mate her with one this week in Nova Scotia. If all goes well hope to have pups sometime in July. Any interested/potential dog lovers can reply to preorder

    • Cheryl says:

Just read your comment reading potential Sheprador pups. Did you have the litter? We are looking for this breed & live in NS. Thanks

I have a 3 year old female Sheprador named Skyler, she is the absolute best dog I have ever had. She is extremely gentle and even tempered (has never bitten anyone), she is super cuddly, sweet, good with other animals and LOVES children. I know it isn’t very common for this breed, but she is also a big couch potato, very lazy and mellow haha. I would completely recommend these dogs, they are the best if you want a gentle, loving, family dog 🙂

  8. P. Criel says:

We just put down our 11 year old German Sheprador. She was a perfect dog, never chewed anything, or peed/pooped in the house. Smart as can be, potty trained in just a week or two. No separation anxiety, or anything like that. But she needed a lot of exercise. Never ran off, we live on 6 acres, no fences, she stayed around, we didn’t really need to train her to do that. She was 120 pounds, however, a little over weight, but her dad was a large German shepherd. When we are ready, we will look for another one.

For P. Cruel , check with us at end of month if interested. Should know if breeding successful.

We just got a baby boy from someone giving them out for free, and we couldn’t resist. He’ll wake me up in the night to go outside and starts trying to go up the stairs when he’s done. He loves to cuddle and we love him!

I just got a shepador 9 week old puppy and I can’t find info on feeding quantities and frequency. She is adorable and full of energy and we named her Sadie

  11. Joe says:

Wow this is dead on. I have 3/4 lab 1/4 German shepherd he is a year a 10 months old. 26-27 inches to the shoulders 85 pounds. He is great with my 4 year old nephew (unless he has food then its a game of tug a war). So much energy 4 or 5+ hours of walks fetch and chasing bunnies. He is good with other dogs when he is off the leash and can run with them. Loves people (maybe a little to much cause he is a big boy and will knock you over still working on calming down around people) loves attention and doesnt like being alone. The shedding is crazy in the late spring and early summer. But super smart and fast learning(when is not crazy hyper) when playing he really likes to use his mouth and paws. They are great dogs

  12. Becca says:

Found one that was abandoned in the not always so nice part of town. I think they gave up because she was so VERY BITEY. But we have taken her in and are in love with her in spite of her naturally teething nature (of course!) And we just can’t see our future without her in it. Named her Maggie and she is just a hoot. Crate training and providing lots of love, attention and toys for her. This breed really rocks!!!

  13. Elesa Brooks says:
