History

This breed was said to have been developed by a group of dog enthusiasts in Birmingham with the intention of creating a Molosser breed with a large body-buildup. They wanted it to be superior to the English Mastiff in terms of agility, ability to work, guarding skills, and discharging duties assigned by police and military officials were concerned. They also desired dogs that would be well-trained and emerge as good family companions. Therefore, after importing the Rottweiler breed from Germany, they started crossing it with the Bullmastiffs, English mastiffs and Neapolitan mastiff available in the United Kingdom. It has been speculated that genes of Great Dane, Presa Canario, and Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier have also been implemented while carrying out the breeding program.

Temperament and Personality

Having a gentle disposition, the Mastweiler shows an immense amount of loyalty to its owners and his family. It is highly protective about its household and territory, going to any extent to safeguard them, just like their Rottweiler and Mastiff parents. The guarding instinct of this breed makes it highly aversive to strangers compelling it to bark at the sight of an unfamiliar face to alarm its master about the intruder. In spite of being gentle with children, careful supervision of an adult is needed when the little ones are in the company of these dogs. In fact these large-sized dogs may knocking down the toddlers when at play with them. Though it thrives well in warm weathers, it is more comfortable in living in cold temperatures.  It may let out a growl while playing or being frightened, also reacting to the sound of a siren.

Care

Exercise

As these dogs are highly agile, capable of jumping to a great height without getting easily exhausted, owners should make it a point to make their pets exercise on a daily basis to ensure physical and mental fitness.

Grooming

These easy-to-maintain dogs do not need too much of grooming. Brush their coat frequently for removing the dead hairs. Keeping their eyes and ears clean minimizes the chances of infections.

Health Problems

The English Mastweiler is said to have a very sensitive stomach, being allergic to corn and chicken. They may even encounter a problem of trembling muscles and ear infections.

Training

These intelligent dogs are fast learners, but may display stubborn and disobedient behavior at times. Therefore, a patient and tactful trainer is essential to lead them in a proper direction. Imparting obedience and socialization training to them since their puppy days may help in developing their personality in a pleasant manner. Owners should incorporate positive reinforcement methods to make the training process a fruitful one.

Feeding

They should be given about four and a half to six cups of dry dog food three times a day. Introduce nutritious foods in their diet to keep them healthy. As they often have problems of with the stomach be careful about the kind of food you are providing them.
