Unlike most other countries, dogs have been considered a food source in Korea for a long time. But with an improving economy, keeping a dog as a companion started becoming commonplace in the 1990s. Though the use of dogs as a source of meat is still in place, studies show that people’s attitude towards dogs is changing, with a considerable shift in the last 15 years. More and more people are understanding the value of a canine friend.

North and South Korea is home to many amazing dog breeds with much to offer, with their outstanding personalities and unyielding loyalty. The Jindo Dog from South Korea is arguably the most famous out of the bunch.

List of Dog Breeds from Korea

Sadly, the dogs from Korea are still treated as livestock and food source. Most of these are medium to large, with their average weight ranging from 35 lbs to 50 lbs.

The Pungsan dog is the only one on this list from North Korea, while the Nureongi originated in the Korean Peninsula. The Tosa Inu is another typical dog often seen in Korea, though it originates from Japan.
