Hungarian Dog Breeds

Hungary is home to 9 working dog breeds raised for specific purposes, mainly hunting, guarding, and herding.

Most of these dogs arrived in the country with the Magyar people around the 9th century. The Magyars already had several dogs herding their sheep and cattle as they traveled around Eastern Europe. After they settled in the Carpathian Basin of Hungary, they started breeding and refining the characteristic and traits of their dogs to eventually come up with the breeds we see today.

Since all these dogs are meant to work outdoors, they are medium to large, with breeds like Komondor and Kuvasz weighing around 100 lbs when adult. The Puli, Mudi, and Pumi are some of the smaller Hungarian breeds weighing about 30 lbs.
