Dalmador

The alert, cheerful, and loving Dalmador is a breed of dog created by crossing between a Labrador Retriever and a Dalmatian. While some of these dogs inherit more of the dominant traits from the Labrador, others have the Dalmatian characteristics prevailing in them. While most of them have the spotted appearance, the others might not exhibit the typical white coat with black spots.

Temperament and Behavior

This gentle, friendly, and family-oriented dog makes a great pet, especially for those seeking an excellent companion. As a faithful and even-tempered dog, it does well with all the family members and children. It also mingles freely with other smaller household pets and may guard them when their owner is away. When left alone, it keeps itself engaged in activities, and it does not show any signs of separation anxiety. Known for its attentive and alert disposition, the Dalmador can warn its owner of an impending threat.

Care

Exercise

The Dalmador is a lively dog and would enjoy going out for daily walks. Long brisk walks and running sessions will not only help in keeping it stress-free but also channelize its energy. Encourage your pet to play and run around in a fenced yard or park.

Grooming

Since it is a frequent shedder, regular brushing is needed to remove the dead hairs. Also, occasional bathing is advisable to keep its coat odor-free and shiny.

Health Problems

The Lab-Dalmatian mix is a healthy breed with no specific health disorders reported so far. However, it can be vulnerable to some health conditions including hip dysplasia, entropion, allergic infections, urinary stone formation, and deafness that are common in its parent breeds.

Training

When it comes to training this intelligent breed, the owners need to be more patient and persistent in their approach since results come steadily. Socialization and obedience training will help the puppies learn the basic etiquettes of a family pet. If you are not an expert hand in training a dog, you can seek professional help.

Feeding

You should offer your Delmador dog a highly nutritious, balanced diet containing enough protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Quality commercial dog foods can be given in amounts of 3-4 cups a day. You can include dry kibble in its diet, but be sure to provide sufficient quantity of water.

Interesting Facts

  • The Dalmadors are known for their herding, sighting, racing abilities, and can be used for military works.
  • These dogs are good diggers and are often seen digging holes in the yard.

Does anyone know where we can buy a Dalmador puppy? Looking for a Christmas present.

    • Tracy says:

Whitney we adopted two Dalmadors from a rescue group at 9 weeks old back in June. One is traditional Black and white spotted and other is All black. I have 5 kids and they are amazingly patient and loving with them. My friends young 2yr old daughter will gently pull on their ears(we correct her immediately) lay on them and give them hugs and they will allow her to do so. They are extremely playful and friendly. One only barks when someone rings doorbell or comes into the house. The other likes to dig so we filled a sandbox with sand and he seems satisfied with digging in there vs all over the yard. I do believe there are breeders who breed dalmadors that can be found via Google search but do your homework and research the breeder. Checking out petfinder or local rescues is a great place too.

My Dalmatian pup (one yo) just had 10 puppies, eight weeks old, sired by a beautiful yellow Lab. They are all jet black with white chest, tuxedo style and several with white feet.
I did not know of Dalmadors, but these are beautiful, outstanding puppies. Lively when playing, but melt into your arms when held. Seven males, who mostly favor the Lab, three females more of Dalmatian features.
I will highly recommend the breed for a pet.

I do not know where you are located but The Rescue Project in Kansas City had a litter of about 10 puppies that were lab/dalmatain. I adopted one today and I heard there were a few more left.

  9. Mike says:

Have 3 yr old. Energetic only begins to fit for first 3 yrs. loves her walks and chasing a catching small animals. Even a fish. Not a mean bone but gets overly excited around people but only for a few minutes. Loves her daddy. Only barks at high flying birds like hawks. Stubborn and listens when she wants to.

  10. Helen Bayne says:

I just got a new dog, Tipsy, that I think is a Dalmador. She’s great and very active. I had a Beagle rescue that has passed. Great dogs too. Tipsy does love the cat but she is very active. She also is only 1 year old. Not a mean bone in her body. Is very weary of strangers but comes around to most, but loves Mama and doesn’t like to leave my side.
