The Chigi is a crossbreed between the Chihuahua and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Like its parents, this dog makes a wonder pet with a very loving temperament, along with all the attributes that its parents have. It is a small sized dog that is loving, intelligent, affectionate, playful and marked by sobriety. This toy breed is one of those that can make a strong bond with its owner and his family. With its small to medium size coat, they are mostly found in copper to orangish hues. The chigi has erect ears, dark eyes and nose. They have a sturdy structure and a long tail.

Temperament and Behavior

The chigi is one of the most modest and well-mannered dogs with the cuteness of the Chihuahua mixed with the herding instincts of its Corgi parent. They are friendly with people and would always be eager to please the owner and his family. Not just that, they are always comfortable with both strangers as also the kids. .

Care should be taken that they are not left for long hours with children, especially if your chigi has taken the side of its chihuahua parent (and are smaller in size), so as to avoid any possible accidents. The chigis also go well with all other pets in its family, including the dogs and the cats.

Chigis socialize well, especially if your socialization training is enough to keep this dog in a good mind. They do not really make a good watchdog, but they would not bark much, and are usually quiet, if not approached by strangers, or they do not come across anything suspicious. In that case, they would give alert calls only to alarm their family members of any impending danger.

This breed is a one-man dog and would make a strong bond with one member in particular in its family with whom they are close. In a nutshell, considering their demeanor, the chigis make great family and apartment dogs.

Care

Exercise

These are dogs with moderate activity levels. They are not in need of a robust schedule of exercise. As an apartment/family dog, the chigi would play all around the house, and that indeed serves the basic part of its daily need for exercise. But take them out for a leash walk and jogging at least once a day.

A trip to the dog park frequently would also be a good idea. This dog has a strong herding instinct inherited from its parent, and hence, this should also keep a good balance of their mind-set and keep it fit and happy.

You can also let them play in an open yard, if you have one. But be aware that the place is properly fenced and is safe for your dog to run and play around freely.

Grooming

The chigi requires a moderate or average maintenance. But groom them regularly, at least once to twice a week, to keep their coat in a good shape.

Health Problems

Because chigis are cross breeds, they, just like other crossbred dogs, are not prone to any breed specific issues. However, care should be taken to keep them clean and hygienic so as to ward off possibilities of any general dog diseases, or those that are carried on by genes including allergy, dysplasia, ear, skin or dental health.

Training

Socialize your dog when it is still a puppy, brought home from the breeders. Because they are always ready to please you, they shouldn’t take much time to learn. Get them acquainted to your pets, friends and family. Other general training, including potty training, obedience training are generally the same as most other breeds.

Diet/Feeding

Give your puppy a balanced diet, mostly full of general nutrition like most other breeds of dog need. But do stick to quality, as also such foods that are meant for dogs of its size and energy-levels.

I found a dog last year. I think he is a corgi mix. How can I make sure

  2. Jake says:

We have a 9 year old Chigi that we adopted when she was 1.5 years old. She is the cutest but has never stopped barking. She barks at everything. Yes I know that we should’ve addressed it earlier. We recently added a Corgi puppy which she gets along with pretty well. Anyone have/had the same issue? We just resorted to a collar that vibrates but now when she has that collar off the barking seems to be more. Appreciate any help.

I just learned the dog breed is referred to as “Chigi” and I love it! Our Chihuahua/Corgi mix was a rescue turned adoption. The elderly couple had 2 small white chihuahua mix dogs the corgi & a Maltese who as about 5 years older. When the one passed away the other owner was moving into a long term care facility & needed to place the dogs as quickly as possible. I picked them up for a short term resolution (or so I thought) but quickly realized these girls weren’t going anywhere. They completed our family. I affectionately refer to them (In song) as my “fat bottom girls” & my 7 year old son who considers the Chigi his best friend says she’s his “chubby wubby”.. you may sense where I’m going & there in lies the problem… Our Chigi is sooooooo chubby!! She will steal a crumb a chip a half sandwich a chicken leg or a t-bone steak if you’re foolish enough to leave it in reach & unsupervised for even a minute. She’s been known to work the pantry door open if not shut tight & take an entire bag of treats!! She’s a corgi, there’s not much clearance from belly to floor & hers is almost non existent. I haven’t weighed her recently but I’d imagine she’s … 32? 33? pounds if she’s an ounce. We love our “fatty princess” (another “pet” name) but I’ve tried everything!! It has almost nothing to do with her for or the qty she’s fed & everything to do with her stealth snack stealing skills. Ugh, she’s killing me!

I so wish I could attach her picture… she is precious! She’s large & in charge, but precious!!

I had to reply to your post,we to have a chigi ,she is the most loving baby,I went to get my haircut and we got to talking
about dogs, long story short,I came home with her, she was 3months old,she is red/blond hair,Amber eyes, shortest little legs, she probably weighs 26 lbs. If not more ,the tip of her tail is white, hence the name Tippy. Like your girl, she will eat anything she can get away with, she is very smart, took only about three times to take her out and she started going to the door herself, picks up things so quick one thing she does is she will get a burst of energy and run around and around me in the yard, just had to brag about her,and let you know that they are a lot alike

  4. Sami says:

    How bad do they shed?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Sami,

Chigis are mostly a moderate-shedding dog, but some individuals can shed a lot throughout the year.

    • Anne says:

I have a chigi and he sheds nonstop , hair everywhere . But he is still awesome .Keep your vaccume plugged in and a lent brush handy ????

  5. cheryl Durlin says:

Our Chigi,Max, is so sweet and loving. It amazes everyone how intelligent he is. Three days to housebreak him. He knows lots of tricks. He wont take treats from strangers, but they can give the treat to me, I give it to him, then he will take it. It is like it needs to be checked first. The energy level is amazing!! He loves everyone and gets pouty if someone does not pet him. He shows off in the stores that are pet friendly. A great breed.

  6. Andrew mercel says:

Mine is a 7 yo rescue. He was petrified of all outdoor life 6 months ago. He is getting so better. He is now taken off the lead in the park, doesn’t go crazy with cars, and will lie down and chill in a busy pub. Doesn’t like other dogs ATM, but working on that. Great companion dog❤️

  7. Renita Edmonds says:

My chigi weighs 20 pounds. Sometimes I feel he’s mixed with something else because he doesn’t have short legs. He barks a lot especially when our granddaughter leaves for school. He’s so much fun and easy to train. He talks a lot too. He tries so hard to say words that he yawns when he’s being trained to say hello. It’s so cute. He literally wakes us up to go potty by talking. He grumbles. It’s hilarious. He also knows how to close doors when commanded. He loves the treats so now we catch him trying to open doors with his paws. Oh by the way, his name is Lex Luther but he said you can call him Lex. You can find him on facebook and youtube. We’re just getting started so your visit would really make him happy.

  8. Cindy says:

Our Chigi little girls has a pink nose and green eyes, her brother has the brown eyes. Should I be worried they aren’t Chigi, we rescued them from a shelter at 3 months.

  9. Bev Mayo says:

I’ve always been a poodle lover, but after my last poodle died of old age, my niece asked if I would consider taking in a little, one year old Chigi that was desperate for a good home. I was a little hesitant, but I’m a sucker for a animal in need! That was 7 years ago and as much as I loved my poodles, this little darling is the love of my life! Sweet, smart, full of personality…I could go on and on. She’s short-haired but sheds a lot year round…trust me, I don’t mind cleaning it up…she’s worth it!

Where can I sell my Chigi pups? I live in Washington state
Mom is a purebred Pembroke dad is a Chihuahua

  11. Candy says:

I adopted my dog at the shelter and they said she was Chihuahua, but I think she has corgi in her too, also she has a corkscrew tail, is that normal for this breed?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Candy,
A corkscrew tail is a genetic condition that commonly occurs in Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers. It occurs due to an abnormal formation of one of the vertebrae in the dog’s tail. Therefore, you should take your dog to the vet for a thorough medical checkup.

  12. k says:

why is the dog called chigi not chorgi

  13. Renee says:

I adopted my chigi at our local animal shelter. Her name is Sugar and she’s had four owners before me in her first year of life. She latched on to my husband and the two are best pals. We love her. She is a very jealous dog and would prefer to be the only dog. But we have a 8 year old terrier that tolerate each other. She can jump very high and she loves to be a watch dog.

  14. Vic says:

I adopted a chigi from my local animal shelter and named him Hank. he is a great dog!!! 4 yo, previous owner passed away. I think he’s been through a lot… another family adopted him before me but brought him back because they said he’s not good with children:/ but he’s great with me. very protective. it took him about 2 months to bark with us and I swear he follows me everywhere and favours me over anyone else in my family. he’s black and tan and we are so lucky to have found him.

  15. Carol says:

Hi. I have a chigi & most often people misprounce Chihuahua. They don’t like to Cheehuahua, even after I tell them how it’s pronounced. I don’t like to be rude but it irritates me like crazy, because I’m mixed with Mexican. Can you give me other ideas on how to get it across to people without being rude?

  16. Virginia Gonzalez says:

Hi mi chigi my sister actually got him in the streets she almost hit him with her car so brought him to her house cause it was also cold outside, put pictures of him around the neighborhoods and no one claim him but it look like he was mistreated, she couldn’t keep him cause she had to pit bulls so i took him he’s a great dog just the only thing is that he gets angry when someone is sweeping, vacuuming, someone hugging another person or little kids he starts to growl at people and sometimes don’t stop so people dislike him but other then that he’s great with me

    • Sandra says:

My Chigi does not like people hugging either and he has bit people when they hug me. Really strange

      • H says:

Our dog grumpy he is very nice to people he knows and some he doesn’t but we all must realise that the temperament of the dog is usually taught.

  17. Mary says:

My chigi, Harper, has a build up of very bumpy, dry, itchy skin in her ears. Can I use a hydrocortisone cream on it?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Mary,
Hydrocortisone cream, an over-the-counter topical ointment, is known for its anti-inflammatory property and is often used in dogs for reducing itching, swelling, and pain caused by allergic reactions or infections. However, it has not been approved by the FDA for veterinary use, and so you should consult your vet before using this medication on your dog.

  18. Wendy cole says:

My chigi recently has had a very bad foul smelling breath I’m wondering if anyone knows what the cause may be ? I do not think it’s his teeth or gums because he eats his dog food with no issues at all.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Wendy,
Your Chigi’s offensive odor may be produced by a buildup of bacteria in his mouth. Some underlying health conditions, including diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal problems, inflammation of the nasal passages and the sinuses, and enlargement of the tube passing through his throat to the stomach may also cause bad breath. Talk to your vet and evaluate your Chigi for these health problems.

  19. John says:

My Chigi “Triump” looks more like a Corgi than a Chihuahua (w/copper fur). It refuses to live indoors or to be tied up. He jumps up to four feet high in the air so that we can see him through the kitchen door. He is a very fast runner and likes to zig zag thru the yard when chasing birds. He nips at my heels when I walk around the yard. He is affectionate, alert, loving, friendly, social, gentle. The 5 schnauzers next door love him, but are not able to keep up with his energy level. This dog is a freak of nature.

  20. Mari says:

Do chigis tend to shed a lot even with their short coats?

  21. Paula says:

Our Chigi ‘Grace’ has such a beautiful nature. She loves to play with her toys and other dogs, loves to run around and also love to sleep. She is so affectionate and doesn’t bark much, but can be vocal with other noises. She sheds like crazy, but I would say that is the only downfall of her breed. She has the black eyes and nose as mentioned, but her ears are down. She weights 12kg and is quite stocky but also slim.

  22. Nicole says:

My chigi is very friendly with everyone he meets and likes to lick and jump. Is this something I can break him of and or are these the Chigi’s natural temperament?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi!
The most likely cause for your Chigi’s licking and jumping behavior is affection. Since Chigis are considered a friendly and social breed, licking or jumping for affection is a natural appeasement gesture. However, if your dog shows excessive licking and jumping, it might signify a compulsive behavior disorder, for which you should seek medical help.

    • Sandra says:

My Chigi jumps too for affection

  23. Dawn says:

How do you correctly pronounce Chigi? Thank you
