The Chi-Spaniel is a cross between the Chihuahua and the Cocker Spaniel dogs. These dogs are popular for being cute, and though small in size, they are known to be brave and alert by disposition. These dogs have either medium or long coat, depending upon which of its parents’ genes are ruling. They are short and slim, attaining a length of about a foot. Their ears can be either erect like the Chihuahuas, or floppy like the cocker spaniels. They mostly have black, round eyes very much like the Chihuahuas, and a triangular, dark muzzle. These characteristics, combined with their appealing nature, have contributed to making them a popular family dog.

Temperament and Behavior

The chi-spaniels have all the good traits that would make them easily adorable to anyone. They are very friendly dogs that would love to spend fun time with the owner and family. These are sensitive and intelligent dogs that understand your feelings, and would enjoy being cuddled by you. They are social and well-behaved and would mingle well with your kids, and are very patient and gentle with them. They are also comfortable with your other pets, or when your guests are present, and can adapt themselves to any environment.

These dogs commonly take part in agility and competitive obedience and love to play. Although you would find a courageous side in them, they would not make good watchdogs, since they would seldom bark if there is an intruder around. But they are loyal, and their attention is always focused on their family members, just like they too would expect your love and attention in return.

However, these little canines, at times, might end up being possessive with one or more members of its family, though this behavior is out of sheer love. This breed sometimes displays stubborn behavior, which they would often inherit from the chihuahua. Socialization during adoption might help in such situations.

Care

Exercise

These slim and small dogs do not need vigorous exercise schedules. They are already playful and are active all day, running and playing all around the house. But because they do need their daily dose of exercise, as also have a passion for walking and running, do take them out every day for short walks or jogging. This would also keep them mentally fit.

They are energetic dogs, and might get bored staying indoors all day. If you have a lawn or a yard, open their leash and allow them to run around. You too can easily participate just to let them have your company. In this context, it is also recommended to take them to dog parks, if you have one around. This would not merely keep them entertained, but also help them socialize well.

Grooming

You do not need to groom your dog every day. Only some moderate grooming should keep your chi-spaniel handsome and healthy. Brush their coat at least twice a week for maintaining hygiene. This would not merely remove the dead and loose hairs but also preserve the natural sheen. Also, trim their nails when too long. If your dog has its ears floppy, persisting warm temperature inside the ears can easily help organisms grow rapidly. This might lead to complications. Do keep their ears clean and dry, mostly after you give it a bath or, if it were out in the rain.

Health Problems

Like most other crossbreeds, the chi-spaniels are not prone to pick up diseases frequently because of their diverse gene pool. However, they are not immune to health issues. General dog diseases can still pester. Also, those health problems that were borne by their parents might easily flow down to their offspring through genes. Go for a routine checkup with your vet annually.

Training

Considering their level of intelligence, natural zeal and intention to please you, training your chi-spaniel shouldn’t be tough. For best results, insist on beginning your training when they are still puppies, soon after you bring them home from the breeders or rescue. This is the time when they can easily learn crate or housebreaking training much faster. Train them to socialize with your neighbors and friends, as also make it clear that bad behavior is not acceptable. But do keep in mind their occasional display of obstinacy. Do not be rude to them, but instead, use a firm and consistent training method with positive reinforcements. Let them know that you are the leader of its pack. Praise them, pat them, show them your affection, or just give them food treats whenever they successfully pick up your training or some trick. Though, you can as well seek help from professional trainers.

Diet/Feeding

Though the little chi-spaniel does not have any breed-specific diet routine, but considering your dog’s abundance of energy, remember it needs lots of energy-enriched food. Insist on a good-quality, healthy diet that can provide your dog with optimal nutrition. High protein diet is recommended for most dogs. Stick to the same routine diet good for other small-sized dogs. You can also cook good dog recipes for your pet just for a change in its taste. But if you go for dry kibbles, make sure they are quality food.
