Breed Recognition details

While the American Canine Hybrid Club and Designer Dog Kennel Club has recognized the name “Cheeks”, the International Designer Canine Registry acknowledges the name Pekachi.

Temperament

The Chihuahua and Pekingese mix are known to be incredibly loving and loyal, being deeply bonded with the owner, following them wherever they go.

They share a good rapport with kids, though the latter should handle these dogs in a decent way.

Just like their parents, this breed may also be aversive towards strangers to a certain extent, warning their owners by letting out a bark whenever he senses an intruder in his household. However, in spite of having sound watchdog ability owing to their alert nature, they are not suitable for guard dogs.

Since they are not too active, they would thrive well in apartments, especially in households with busy people.

Care

Exercise

Owing to their small size, their exercise requirements are minimum, with a walk daily and sufficient amount of playtime at home being enough to keep them physically and mentally energized. Arrange for a lot of interesting toys at home to keep them busy when indoors.

Grooming

Cheeks with short hair like the Chihuahua would suffice with a weekly brushing while the long-haired ones need to be brushed at least thrice a week. Bathe your dog when needed as well as clean its eyes and ears regularly to keep infections at bay. However, if you are residing in cold regions then make sure to give your dog clothes to keep it warm.

Health Problems

Though a healthy breed, it may develop some of the common ailments their parent’s face like dental issues, joint problems and hypoglycemia as the Chihuahua or eye ailments, allergies and even respiratory ( especially if it is flat-faced) concerns as the Pekingese.

Training

Similar to its parents, the Chihuahua mixed with Pekingese might also at times display a stubborn behavior making training a challenge. Hence, an experienced owner is well-suited to train the Chihuahua Pekingese mix puppies rather than first timers who would attempt in handling them in a firm and wise way.

Obedience

It is essential to impart obedience training to your Cheeks puppy to keep its stubborn nature under control. Acquaint it with several commands like “sit,” “come,” “stop” and so on. If you have already taught your dog to stay with a leash on, then bend down to its level and say “Come”, while pulling at the leash in a gentle way. As it proceeds to you, shower it with its favorite treat.

Socialization

Teach your dog the difference between a good and bad experience by exposing it more to the outside world. You can carry it along with you on a shopping spree or to a park where it gets acquainted with a lot of people as well as pets. Interacting more with the outside world would help him to get acquainted with different experiences.

Feeding

Provide you Pekingese and Chihuahua mix with one-fourth to half cup dry dog food daily. Apart from this make sure to include an adequate amount of nutrients to its diet to help it be healthy.

I am in a desperate search for a cheek puppy or rescue. Can you offer any advice?

I have a sweet Cheeks since she was one year old. She was difficult to train in the beginning but she is the sweetest most amazing dog I’ve ever had. After 3 years I completed her service dog training. She had a natural ability to read heart rate and blood pressure and I have a rare disease. She is now 10 and looks like she’s 4. Still spunky and sassy. She runs the house even with 3 other boy dogs.

I have a cheeks! Her name is stella. My sister boyfriends peek and chi had babies and she was the most chihuahua looking of them all! She is my best friend. With me and my family she is the most lovable creature. With strangers she’s a little crazy. She lunges and she barks and she growls! She’s not the greatest with kids. She’s really not that great with other dogs and less she knows them. She’s actually going to training classes recently but she is honestly otherwise the best dog I’ve ever had. Her personality and how playful she is an energetic is amazing. Regardless of how fresh and mean she is I still take her on every trip and adventure I possibly can.

I had a “Cheeks”- mom was a Pekingese and dad was a chihuahua, lived 14 years and 3 months. Took him hiking with me every Sunday- he was an amazing dog. A little grumpy at times, not great with kids but tolerated then, head strong, but loyal and a huge personality. Just had to put him down- cancer. He was so worth it.
I don’t even know how to find another one like him.

My darling little girl, name is princess freckles was born November 6th 2007

I have been her father/mother since she was about three years old and got her from a past roomate who asked if I would like to keep her when he moved out and of course I said yes because we had bonded so much.
The most loving and faithful companion I’ve ever had but since reading up on the breed I have to laugh because yes she can be quite stubborn old lady sometimes
Seeing as she is almost 11 and 1/2 years old and has never been fixed, would it be recommended 2 get her fixed at this stage in her life.
I do notice that her hearing doesn’t seem as good as it used to be same as her eyesight yes sometimes she still acts like a puppy.

I’ve heard not fixing can lead to cancer so definitely a conversation to have with your vet. I adopted my little girl from a rescue so she was already fixed.

I use to raise miniature schnauzers but when my last died of a brain tumor it took me 6 years to be able to love again. I found my cheeks puppy on petfinder.com and so glad I have her. She goes everywhere with me. Don’t know how I’ve lived without her.

  7. Tanya says:

I got my Cheek when a Longhaired Chihuahua breeder was appalled that her ‘baby’ was knocked up by a Pekingese. She was going to have the litter destroyed! A friend of mine and I found them homes. My little Bam-ee is now 9yra old and a wonderful, loving, entertaining girl! I confess I did not know the lifespan is so short.. Brings tears to my eyes ????

I rescued the cutest little red Pickachu. She is female and very lovable. Good with children. But is stubborn in here own ways. I was told she is about a year old. She is very loyal and right by me all the time. Loving my choice at the Rowan North Carolina adoption fair. She had just came in as I got there as a surrendered with 7 others from same home. Others were flea infested and hair matted up. Pittiful. Love my Foxie Lady as she looks like a little Foxie.

My wife and I rescued a pikachu in 2004. Lovely dog. Ferocious to strangers, he never bites but apparently looks ferocious so people get scared of him. He’s incredibly sweet, with a big round head, floppy ears and big bug eyes, and a curled up tail. Him says I’m a tiggerWigger Ours had a rare kind of disease so his reproductive stuff never descended, meaning he can be around dogs in heat and he’ll just shrug. Hi, wanna play. We had to buy a heavy duty steel chain from the hardware with a 300 pound pulling capacity because he was breaking every single leash we bought elsewhere. He does still occasionally get off but now he has to slip his collar to do it. He’s a fat little thing, weighing in at just a hair over 25 pounds.

      • LARISSA says:

Mine is 20 lbs even though I only feed her half a cup of food twice a day like recommended. She’s a cute little chubby sausage. Guess its old age
