Temperament and Behavior

Known for their devotion to their owner and the household, the social, affectionate, and gentle Bulloxers love to lie as close to their master as possible. These loving dogs with a charming disposition might get destructive when separated from their family for a prolonged period.

Because of their inherent alertness and courageous nature, the Boxer-American Bulldog mix is always aware of their surroundings. They can be suspicious of strangers and become aggressive to unfamiliar people only when they are perceived as threats. These dogs attain maturity slowly and may behave like boisterous puppies for some years.

They are usually patient with children as well as small dogs and puppies. However, they may have trouble getting along with large adult dogs.

Care

Exercise

Being very playful and exuberant, the Bulloxer is always active indoors. To satisfy its need for exercise and keep its muscles toned, take your pet for long walks, play fetch, or get it involved in agility, flyball, and other dog sports.

Grooming

As it is a light shedder, its coat does not require much grooming. Weekly brushing using a rubber grooming-mitt or bristle brush will help keep its hair under control. Bathe your Bulloxer only when needed. Trimming its nails once a month and daily brushing its teeth are some of the other grooming needs.

Health Problems

Although the Bulloxer is generally a healthy and physically active breed, some dogs may get affected by a few health issues. These include hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, bloating, intestinal problems, heart conditions, and cancer.

Training

  • Clicker training: Since the Bulloxers might be headstrong by nature, using harsh methods to make them obey to commands could induce behavioral problems. They tend to respond better to clicker training, which is a simple method of training based on positive reinforcement techniques. Follow a click-treat-click-treat pattern so that your dog can associate the noise of the clicker with a reward. Make sure that the clicker is held out of sight.
  • House training: Establish a regular schedule so that your Bulloxer puppy learns when to play, to eat, and to potty. Since a pup can control its bladder 1-2 hours, you should take it frequently to a specific spot outside, where it can eliminate.

Feeding

An adult Bulloxer needs 3-4 cups of dry dog food a day.

  3. Caleb Holler says:

I had a wonderful bulloxer named Charlie for 13.5 years. She was all white except a large black patch over her right eye. She was easy to train, loved kids and small dogs. And the only time she ever barked in excitement was when my parents came over. When we’d go to “the big house” aka my parents, when it was time to leave she’d run up the steps and stair at me. Massive personality. I miss her every day. I’d love to get another. Best breed ever

  5. Amanda says:

I have a 10wk old bulloxer puppy.. We are currently dealing with him biting on my husband and I during play and jumping/biting at me.. He also likes to attack our ankles when we walk.. Is there anything we can do to stop this? I am home during the day and try to keep him occupied with toys amd taking him on walks but he continues to bite/nip & jump at us.. HELP!!!!!!

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Amanda,
Playful mouthing is common behavior for puppies or young dogs. However, teaching him bite-inhibition so that he can control the force of his mouthing is important. When you play with him, allow him to mouth on your feet or hands. If he bites too hard, give a high-pitched yelp to momentarily startle your Bulloxer puppy and stop him from mouthing you. Then, praise him for stopping. When he tries to gnaw on your toes or fingers, substitute a chew bone or toy. If he mouths on your hand when patted or stroked, distract him by giving him treats from the other hand. To stop him from biting your feet, have his favorite tug-toy in your pocket. Whenever he tries to nip or bite, wave the toy to entice him to grab it.

    • Linda says:

Hi.my with my am bulldog g when she bit too hard I started biting her ear. I just bit hard enough to where she felt, and finally she stopped biting hard.
But do you have any pups right now?

I have a 6 year old neutered male Bulloxer. I adopted him from rescue. He is a wonderful almost perfect dog! I had his DNA done, and he was definitely the product of a careful breeding program going back at least 4 generations. He is 85 lbs. Red and while, with definite Boxer eyes. I am in So Cal. does anyone know who might have been breeding these dogs around here? He is extremely calm, intelligent, and adores children. I am going for his CGC shortly. I would like to find another one!

We got our Bulloxer (Oreo) a black and white male just under 2 years ago when our Pitbull Phil passed away at 11 years..He has been a great dog so far and I highly recommend this breed to others especially if you have a family… Everything they say about this breed is spot on..Very loving, loyal Playful and they also make great gaurd dogs…He sits in the middle of the house and hears Everything..No one can come around my house or in my yard without Oreo letting me know..He a natural.. Very protective of me and my family and very weary of outsiders even if it’s one of my friends I invite over that he’s never met before and that’s a good thing to me…….He also gets along well with our 7 year old Shi-tzu Princess as well….We payed alot for him but I’ll have to say he was well worth the money…He is one of the coolest dogs I’ve ever own and he’s absolutely adorable and gets alot of attention everywhere he goes even the niegbors love him too…..Wish I could post a picture of him on here or I would…Best of luck if your reading this and looking for a new companion……… Kevin McMillin…. I am looking for female puppy Bullboxer as a very loving family pet for me and my husband. We lost our beautiful 8 year old Maggie, a bulloxer, in a terrible house fire 10 days ago in Dallas and we are just so devastated. The new puppy will have the best care medical care in Dallas as did Maggie. We love our pet like we love our grown boys! Maggie was our life, it’s still so hard to believe she is gone. I prefer white with brindle patches.

The only thing is she sometimes have more than enough energy. She now knows the Sit Stay and Go to bed command, but still everyday ateuglle with potty issues! Any ideas on the potty issues and the destruction of furniture? She has eaten a hole in my wall and chewed up my faux wood floors! I love her but she has expensive bad habits.. but other than that her guard dog mentality is spot on

Try live and let live farm in Chichester Manchester. They have a new puppy litter every week. That’s where I got my willow (she’s a bull boxer). All the dogs and puppies are really friendly and loving. If you live near it than you should totally check it out!

  16. Jeff says:

If you’re interested in a boxer and a English bulldog but can’t decide between the two. Then let me tell you your best bet is to go with the bull boxer I was skeptical too at first but I would not trade my two year old puppy for the world he’s protective playful obedient and very very good with my children you won’t find a better mixed breed.

  17. Paula says:

I have a bulloxer. ( American bulldog/boxer ) so many people confuse the American bulldog as a Pittbull and they are a completely different breed of dog. My willow is white with brown and black Brendel spots on her back and tail with one black ear. Her nose and eyes are pink. ( pigmentation deformity ). She’s full of energy, Loving, observant, loyal and excellent with my 8 year old son. I couldn’t ask for a better dog.

    • Ryan says:

Bulloxers are the best Dog breed ever, hands down. They are so loving, careful, don’t bark very much, and strong. They are always on guard, watching carefully for any issues. Only problem with mine is that she doesn’t get along with other dogs so much and can be defensive if another dog is rude (i.e runs up and smells her face right away without the proper introduction.) I blame this on the owners not training their dogs correctly though. My dog won’t put up with it and I don’t blame her.

  18. Laurie says:

Where can I get a bulloxer. Have had one in the past that we loved but they seem to be impossible to find.
