The Bogle, often spelled as “Boggle”, is a breed of dog produced from a Boxer and Beagle parent. It is a strong, muscular, and athletic crossbreed that inherits its expressive face, drooping ears, deep chest, and a long body with well-balanced posture from its ancestors. It is a fitting choice of pet for those who want a merry, fun-loving, and active companion. Its natural hounding instincts along with a great sense of smell make it suitable for use in detection of narcotics, watching, and tracking activities.

Temperament and Behavior

The Bogle dogs will keep you amused with their funny and playful nature. When they are not acting in a silly manner, they will have an air of confidence and dignity. Even though they are wary of strangers, they will respond to friendly people in a polite fashion. These pets are always patient and responsive with active older children. However, they can be rambunctious at times, which make supervising their interactions with toddlers necessary. Teach your kids never to annoy the Bogles while they are sleeping or eating. The Beagle Boxer cross will mingle with other animals including dogs and cats if they are socialized at a young age.

Care

Exercise

A Bogle dog is quite exuberant and should be provided with enough opportunities to work off its energy. It enjoys going for 30-40 minutes regular walks and jogging with its family. A good run in a fenced yard will help stimulate its mind and body. You can consider playing fetch with your pet or getting it to participate in dog sports like a fly ball, agility, rallying, and dock jumping.

Grooming

The Beagle and Boxer mix’s coat requires minimal maintenance. Simple weekly brushing is all that is required to remove dead hairs. Frequent bathing should be avoided unless its coat is appealingly stinky and dirty. You can rub its coat down with a wet towel to maintain its natural shine. The Bogle dog is prone to ear infections, making it necessary to examine its ears every two weeks. Monthly trimming its nails as well as weekly brushing its teeth is recommended.

Health Problems

The Bogle does not have any known breed-specific health concerns, but it may inherit genetic disorders from its parent breeds. Moreover, it may suffer from general dog conditions such as allergies, cardiovascular disorders, gastric issues, and problems of the hip joint.

Training

The Bogle does not like to be treated harshly, especially when it is trained. Resort to firm, consistent training methods instead and make sure that you reward its good behavior with treats. Try exposing your dog to strangers as well as other pets when it is young. This will prevent it from becoming ill-tempered and aggressive. Apart from basic obedience, it is necessary to house train your Bogle puppies to help it learn good habits and etiquettes.

Feeding

A meal containing 25% protein is recommended for this actively working breed. An adult Bogle will need 2-3 cups of high-quality dog food on a regular basis. You may include few sources of slow-burning carbohydrates such as brown rice and sweet potatoes in your dog’s diet. Make sure your pet gets enough quantities of fish, eggs, raw meat, pumpkins, and carrots.

Interesting Facts

  • The Bogle dogs are good jumpers, so they should be kept in properly fenced yards while outdoors to prevent them from wandering away.

We have a double rescue boxer beagle mix. Have some history on her. Dumped with a litter of pups, was to be put down, rescued by our daughter in law n son, and then later we were given her from our son who didnt have time for her due to a growing family. Sweet dog, 9 to 10 years old. She is very social, but is also very protective of us. An ‘old dog for ‘old people’. Perfect dog for us. Only issue is have to keep a close eye on her as she tends to wonder n forgets her way home. Neighbors give her treats n then brings her home!!! She loves to swing on the porch swing with us. Wouldn’t trade her for the world!!!!.

We have a 1 yr old bogle named George. Had him since he was about 5weeks. His mother was pregnant when she was rescued. He is on the larger side. Around 55-60 pounds. Crate trained, extremely hyper…but he loves people and other animals. He is still working on boundaries though. Aggressive on occasion, but it’s easily corrected. He is a boxer stuck in a beagle sized body. Lol he is funny though ????

I’m trying to figure out what kind of dog my beagle mix might be. Thinking boxer. Can anyone tell me how big a four month old female might be? She’s 15lbs.

We have a bogle named bruzer. Hes 13 yrs old. He is literally the best dog ever!! He has had diarrhea for 2days and today hes been vomiting. Has anyone lost a bogle this way?

    • Susan says:

I have an older bogle, he is about 14 or 15. He was a stray when we took him in so unsure of the age. He stared throwing up on a daily basis. I started cooking for him and this has stopped him throwing up. I make him chicken, white rice, and carrots. I boil the chicken and steam the carrots in my rice maker while making the rice. Then I shred the chicken and carrots in my food processor nd mix it with the rice. He LOVES it. Sometimes in the morning I scramble him about 4 eggs with no seasoning except for the olive oil I spray in the pan and mix that with 1/4 cup of raw steel oats (uncooked). He is not too keen on the oats because there is quit a few bits left on the plate so I might start cooking that. I am still tweaking how much to feed him because he is old and not active. He started gaining weight so I need to cut his portions down a bit. Hope this helps!

  5. Jeff says:

I have a beagle/boxer mix named Buddy. The sleeping part in the article doesn’t apply to him. I rescued him as a pup from a kill shelter almost seven years ago. When I first brought Buddy home, he only slept in his bed during the day, but at night he’d snuggle right under my chin as I sleep on my side. He’d often moan like he does when he rolls in the grass and gets pet when sleeping in my arms. lol

That being said, I can nuzzle my face against his when he’s napping, and it will produce the same feel-good moan.

  6. April says:

We have a Bogle, she’s adorable. She loves everybody and every dog she meets. If she meets a dog who doesn’t want to play she will MAKE them play with her. She definitely has traits from both breeds. She greets like a Boxer, paws first, and loves to play tug of war, like a Boxer. She sniffs out everything and loves rolling on dead things like a Beagle, digging holes, hunting rabbits in the yard, everything you think of when you think Beagle. Ornery as sin, but we’d never think of parting with her.

  7. Brad says:

I have mystery mutt that was labeled smstaa Shepherd mix by SPCA..After having doing lots of research I believe she is a boxer beagle mix aka Bogle…She is my best friend. She’s the most intelligent, most loving, loyal companion anyone could imagine. She aims to please and loves to give kisse.Excellent family dog if you give them the love and excersise. They love woods and and make awesome hiking partner’s.

  8. Amy says:

I have been blessed by rescuing what I now know as a Bogle. He is the best pup ever! Samson has been easily trained and is always by my side! I feel comfortable letting him run unleashed and when he wears himself out he comes straight back. He super intelligent and a great companion!! He is almost 5 mos old and weighs 47lb! Hence the Biblical name Samson! He does know his own strength!! Although I have considered painting him red and renaming him “Clifford”, the big red dog!!!

  9. Tracey says:

I have a 1 1/2 year old Bogle, he is a chewer too. I make sure he ALWAYS has chew toys available. Bones, Rope with knots in it, stuffed toys. Never rawhide, it is bad for them. I think if you keep him stocked in chew toys they aren’t as likely to chew on your stuff. I feed mine Grain Free Food because he has a sensitive tummy. They are very smart dogs and quick too. He is very loyal, but sometimes he likes to play a little rough, and you have to remind him to be a gentleman. A good quality kennel is beneficial not only for them to have their own space to retreat to, but to keep them out of trouble when you are not home.

  10. Heather says:

I got my bogle about two months ago from someone on line he is about a year old we love him to death but we can not get this dog to behave he eats anything he sees including toys and other objects and cat litter with BM in it. We are always taking him out all day long but he still in going to the bathroom in are house every night does anyone have any advice on how to get him to stop eating everything he sees??

    • Bonnie says:

Have you tried crate training him? If not do this for at least 6 months to a year. They are never too old to start crate training. It really does help a lot. I got my Bogle at a 1.5yr, and he was a rescue dog… the RETRAINING was a lot of work for about 8 mo, but it’s so worth it. He has improved significantly with ALL the bad behaviour. No more going to the bathroom in the house, no more chewing on things. A variety of chew toys are also very helpful.

    • Karen says:

hopefully you have this under control now but if not, redirect, redirect, redirect. And don’t leave stuff laying around. move the litter box to where he can’t get to it or gate off the room. I just got my bogle and we have cats. The room with the box has a gate that is high enough for the cats to get through but not the dog. All dogs love eating cat poo. It’s a dog thing

  11. Brian says:

Looking to see if anyone else has a bogle like mine. He is 22lbs, and 5 years old. He has all the quality of the beagle breed but his coat is a rich chocolate color with the tuxedo wHite inlay I haven’t seen a bogle like him online or in person. Looking to breed soon because of his age and size which meets hotel requirements. Just need the right lady for him to breed with my email is zero060989@hotmail.com if you would like to swop pics to match.

  12. Ronda London says:

We have a Boggle and just love her. We found her on Cragislist from someone who didn’t want her at 10 weeks. We brought her home and haven’t stopped laughing since. She is such a joy to have. My only recommendation with this breed is bell train. Shade never barked or whined to go out, but had her bell trained within a week. Never had an accident by 16 weeks old and she is 2 and a half now. She loves everyone and everything (except squirrels). She is one that will lay down on her back and want belly rubs, just be careful when you are done and take about 4 (huge) steps back out of her reach, she likes to jump. LOL Over all health is great, she is a little over knee height (5’6″ for me) and weights around 54 lbs. She is free fed every day and the vet just told me she is perfect weight and to keep doing what we are doing. Great breed! Rarely barks but does “try” to howl when the whistle goes off. Shade is very smart and playful, so glad we found her.

  13. Lisa Henry says:

I recently adopted a Bogle and he is the best dog ever! We named him Charlie Brown. He is so sweet, loving, loyal and cuddly. He always wants to be right up against me and sleeps under the covers. He is almost 2 years old and only weighs 24.5 pounds, so he is on the smaller side for this breed. (Perfect size if you ask me!) My only complaint is that he tends to chew shoes, so we have to be very careful. Other than that he is amazing. We already had another dog, a Rat Terrier, and she is not usually friendly with other dogs. She LOVES Charlie and they play so well together. He is just so easy going that she doesn’t feel the need to be dominant so it works out.

We also have a 2 year old grandchild and he is not only gentle with him, but sits right next to him when he is over and is never too rowdy. It’s like he knows he is a little guy and needs to be calm around him. Shows you how smart he is! I just love this dog!

  14. Nora Lee says:

I have had dogs and cats all my life (Im an active 66 yo) and afdoptef “Decaf” just before his first birthday and now going into the 4th month together, I find him the most adiorable, loving, intelligent, behaved, sweet little guy I have ever known. He loves to play ball and I find that our diownhill paved drive-way with him tethered on two 20 ft lines chasing three balls at s time the most fun and cutest playtime of all! He bounces diwnhill catching and manipulating all tthree balls until they all come to rest where he wants them. He follows me everywhere. He, too , is a picky eater and I find if I mix a little of something that I am eating with his Benefical, he eats good. He’s very active yet loves to nap when I need quite activity time. He learns commands and continues to respect them quickly and eagerly. He is the most wonderful pet and I love my “Little Decaf”. He fills all the voids in “empty nest syndrome”.

  15. Donna says:

We just adopted Sir Lennox Lewis from the animal shelter. We had not heard of a beagle/boxer mix before. His face is just adorable-thus his name (for those who know boxing) Oh my goodness he’s the perfect dog! We just love him. He’s 1 year old and was so easy to train. We are looking ahead for all the fun years to come with our Lennox!

  16. Carol Haggerty says:

My daughter Recently got a 7 month old bogel puppy and just fell in love with it. Unfortunately she works during the day and is trying to crate train him for a four hour period a day and he has become an escape artist. Beyond the normal, does Anyone have any suggestions that might help. She has gotten him to were he will go in on command but finds a way out.

  17. Nicole says:

I just got my Bogle 2 months ago and I couldn’t be happier! Roscoe is the most loving and playful dog ever! He was 11months when I got him, he’s the perfect size and doesn’t bark (which I was/still completely ammazed since he has beagle in him) He is the perfect dog for my kids and me. Only bad thing is he is a very picky eater! I’ve tried all kinds of foods…brands and even soft good. When he goes to my ma’s he eats cat food like nothing or I have to mix ground beef in his dog food. Any good tips on how to train him? He was already potty trained, knew how to sit and fetch when we got him…would like to teach him to catch, roll and so on (first dog I’ve actually owned)

  18. Clinton says:

This mixed breed is too perfect. Do they drool?

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi!
It is normal for all dogs to salivate, as it helps them cool down when their body is heated and fatigued. Each Bogle is different, and your pup may drool before eating in anticipation of food. Furthermore, when he is in sleep, his relaxed jaw muscles might cause his mouth to open, letting the saliva leak out. But if he is drooling in excess, it could be a sign of health problems like a neurological condition or periodontal disease.

  19. Gary says:

BTW When we got Shiloh she just had pups and was very thin. we feed her Fromm and she is hard as a rock .

  20. Gary says:

We have a beagle / Boxer mix she was 26 lbs. on Jan 6th when we got her and is now 40 lbs she is 5 years old. we truly could not ask for a better dog. in fact we would like a second one , so she has a buddy. She does not like kids on bikes. but she never leaves the yard and when I take her for a run in the game lands she is always looking to see where I’m going. When I go to bed she gets on the bed till I take my pants off. Then she gets off the bed till I lie down, then gets up on it to find a place for her to sleep. It don’t get any betterr then that 🙂

in nc have a beagle mixed with a boxer mother is a beagle. call 252-370-2985.

    • Mary Murphy says:

If you are still looking for a Bogle I have a 5-6 month old rescue I am fostering in FL. She’s active, inquisitive, a tracker, and runs like a gazelle. She has been around cats and dogs and loves to play and romp. Once in a while she does bark like she’s scared of someone unfamiliar, but not often, similar to my lab I think it can be minimized further. She is very active and after Christmas came and went may have been why she ended up as a rescue.
