Beagador

The Beagador, also called the Beagle Labrador Mix, is a designer dog created by crossing a Beagle and a Labrador Retriever. This fun-loving dog is similar to Beagle in height but has a slightly longer torso. Its medium-sized body has a short coat akin to that of its Labrador parent. As a multi-talented breed, it does well in dog sports like jogging and agility.

Temperament and Behavior

The Beagadors are calm, devoted, and sweet-natured dogs that love to attach to their owners. They are an absolute joy to hang around with, and their funny behavior will often make everyone laugh. With proper training, they get along well with people and can live peacefully with other animals.

The Labbe Retrievers get easily bored when they are left alone too long. This might encourage them to look for ways of amusing themselves, inducing unwanted activities like digging and howling. These playful pets tend to grab things with their mouths just for fun. To keep them from doing this, they should be trained at a young age, preferably when 9-12 weeks old.

Being naturally inquisitive, the Lab and Beagle mix dogs like to sniff and inspect things around. An interesting smell might urge them to wander off. They also exhibit a fair amount of confidence and fearlessness when confronting with an intruder. Thus, they can also be used for watching and guarding.

Care

Exercise

To work off its excess energy, a matured Beagador needs daily activities. It enjoys going for leashed walks with its owner. Since it is prone to obesity, do not allow it to become lazy. Jogging and brisk running across a well-fenced yard will keep it physically fit and active. It can also be kept busy by playing games of fetch.

Grooming

Brush your Labbe dog’s coat 2-3 times a week with a brush having medium-sized bristles. This will remove its loose hairs and stimulate new hair growth. Do not bathe it frequently unless it is extremely smelly and dirty. Make sure that you check its dropped ears every two weeks for infections. If it does not wear its nails down naturally, trim them 1-2 times a month. When it comes to its dental care, use a vet recommended toothpaste to brush its teeth twice or thrice a week.

Health Problems

Beagadors may suffer from the health conditions that are common in its parent breeds including bone disorders like hip dysplasia and patellar luxation; eye disease such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy, glaucoma, and cataracts; and bacterial infections of the skin and ears.

Training

The Labeagles will require an expert hand to help them learn all the basic etiquette of living in a family. Start socialization and house-training early. When training the puppies, always stick to positive reinforcement techniques. You can use a tasty treat to handle an unruly or rambunctious pet.

Feeding

If they get the opportunity, these food-loving dogs can eat all day. Therefore, it is important that you measure your pet’s food and prevent it from over-eating. Dry kibble is an essential dietary component, but you should keep the daily amount between 1.5 and 2.5 cups. Choose foods depending on your pet’s age and lifestyle.

Interesting Facts

  • The Lab and Beagle Mix dogs are excellent diggers and can easily escape from a garden, if not properly fenced.

are you a breeder? How do I find one?

  2. Phiilip Dean Clowes says:

my Lily is now three years old. She was a Mexican rescue. She’s fixed and chipped and had all her shots from the rescue. She’s an amazingly friendly dog with people and other dogs. Wwhen friends come to visit, they all want to take her home, but she’s not that kind of girl. Her mix is Lemon Beagle and a white Lab She is a very loving dog who was crate trained. When I take her to the dog park, she wants to run with the bigger dogs. She’s supper fast but not much of a swimmer

  3. Kathy says:

Has anyone tried professional training for their Beagador? We’re sending our 5 month old in a few weeks (boot camp basically. He’ll stay there for 2 weeks) He’s been a wonderful pup. Housebroken and nighttime crate trained. He has horrible separation anxiety. Howls forever. But a real lover of his people. Lap dog for sure!!

    • Ed says:

I tried keeping our beagador in the crate the first night and he was hounding so I let him sleep with us and my wife fell in love with the cuddling ! Sucks because now I don’t get cuddles time with the wife hahah but it’s so cute and soggy so small even at 15 weeks

  4. Alison Harrington says:

I have a 6 month old Beagador, very easy to toilet train and knows his basic commands, very very loving but does have a naughty streak, relentless chewer but is crate trained so no probs when left alone, exceptionally stubborn and voices his opinion if it is something he doesn’t want to do, great with my 14 and 9 year old children, has boundless energy to play with them in the garden, I absolutely adore my Beagador ????

  5. Pam says:

I adopted a beagdor puppy 10 years ago. Yes, like most everyone else’s labbes, he was very stubborn and loved wandering off and chewing up everything I owned. He ate the upholstery off of my couch, he dug a hole in my memory foam mattress, he chewed up a cell phone, he dug into the walls…..he once tore open a feather pillow. The feathers were the worst. (And this was after multiple hikes every week.) But hang in there. After about 4 years, he chilled out and is the best dog ever. I seriously don’t think I’ll ever have such a sweet, empathetic dog again- so just get through those first few years. 🙂

  6. Lori Collins says:

I have a 9 month old beagador that I need to re-home. She is very sweet, loves kids, and is completely housebroke. Her bad habit is that if she gets loose she will not come back when we call her. We have to chase her down. If interested you may call or text me at 419-483-1678.

    • Lacey says:

That’s what mine does as well. If you raise your voice to him he takes off and good luck catching him. They take a lot of patience but he’s my service dog and he does a good job at his tasks.

  7. Harrison says:

I got a puppy that was supposed to be a purebred lab and upon arrival we noticed the dog with the teets wasn’t a lab. The dad was a big chocolate lab and the mom looked to be a beagle lab mix but was about the same size as the other female lab. What size will this puppy be if he’s 3/4 lab and 1/4 beagle? He loves retrieving and isn’t shy to noise so he’s gunna be a great hunting dog but only if he grows. He’s about 3 months now and is 25lbs. Will he take more of the lab or beagle in respect to size? Thanks

  8. Susie B says:

Thanks everyone for these tips. My beagador is 12 weeks old. I got her at 8 weeks and I absolutely adore her but she can be very stubborn. Particularly about potty training. She will go on pads on command but same thing, I take her outside and she gets stubborn and won’t go. Or she gets distracted and starts playing with whatever is outside. We come back in, and she goes on the floor. With other things, she’s been quick to train. We mastered up and down stairs this week (down still needs encouragement) and beginning leash walking, since she just got last shots. I will get a doggie door. It worked great for my Australian shepherd puppy, years back. I just want to make sure she’s big enough that leaving her alone in house won’t be a disaster. She is sweet, affectionate and very funny. She goes from being afraid of something to considering it a challenge, very quickly. When I tried can of pennies to get her from nipping, she ran the first time. Th next time, she went after the can. So much for that solution. For those looking, I found mine on Petfinder and I wasn’t even looking for this breed (didn’t even know about them) but I wanted a medium-sized dog and love labs and beagles so it was a happy gut decision for me. I do have a large, fenced backyard but I’m afraid she’ll be able to dig under the fence before too long.

  9. Mary McElhone says:

Does any one know of a breeder for beagador puppies? We have plans to add a new family member in the future. My beagador/labbe is 12 years old. He is the most intelligent wonderful dog we have owned. He was not as easy as our other dogs to potty train but a doggie door did the trick for us years ago (not sure why because he is just so intelligent). He gets along with all dogs/cats, kids and adults. We can take him anywhere and he is always well behaved. He protects our yard and house; barking and alerting us to anyone that comes by. Unfortunately, he is getting older and starting to go deaf. Our last dog, a pure breed beagle lived to be 18, but was deaf and had Alzheimers in the end. Our Beagador became his ears and his best friend. So we are hoping to find another one. Also, yes our Beagador had a bit of separation anxiety, but this got better as he got older. We are very active people so our dogs have always received a lot of exercise to burn that energy off; plus we have a large fenced in yard. 702-524-2348

  10. Misty says:

All I can say about a Beagador is have patience. We’ve had Charlie over a year now and it has been an adventure. The first couple of months was like having a house full of toddlers. There was no down time. He was everywhere into everything. It took us at least 8 months to get into his routine. Since we live in a “leash law” area and don’t have a fenced yard, he needs several walks a day to be calm in the evening. We can’t just open the door and let him run. That’s the worst part because my boy has legs for days and just wants to run. He’s short like a beagle but has the strength and agility of a lab but he’s the sweetest dog you’d ever meet. We have two cats and he’s obviously stronger than they are but even though he may chase them in boredom, he knows they are smaller and doesn’t want to hurt them. He’ll stop short and avoid the slap but he never retaliates. He does have severe separation anxiety. It is my husband , my son and myself living here but if any of us leave, he grieves and whines until we return, even if someone else is here. He’s a great dog, very funny and energetic. We are his whole world. My advice is just be patient, if they are anything like Charlie, you will never more loved than you are by them.

  11. Beth says:

We got ours at 6 weeks old. She was a handful!!!! To house train. She would go out, we have a fenced in yard, when she came back in she would pee within 5 minutes. It didn’t matter how long she was out she came in to pee!! My daughter kept her alive, literally. We have 2 other dogs, a pit boxer and dachshund mix, they get along GREAT. BOSSIE, our lab beagle has now gotten the hang of being potty trained. She will still chew stuff up but she is still in a puppy stage. She has tons of personality. We love our Bossie, btw, her name fits her perfectly.

    • Bella Cara says:

I am considering a beagle lab mix…concerned about the tough go with potty training. What method? Crate training? Or just timing feedings? Positive reinforcement? A trainer? Also, could anyone advise adult size. I can’t handle a pit and don’t want a buddy that is much stronger than me!:)

      • Kathy Steiss says:

I recently lost my lab/beagle mix at 16 yrs old. She was the love of my life. Potty training was not ever a problem nor was she stubborn. I would take another in a minute.

        • Sherry says:

Sorry to hear about your loss. I just lost mine too at 14 years old. Heartbreaking. Still haven’t gotten over it. It’s going to take some time. My other dog is very down too. It’s been hard on us. Miss him every day! ????????

  16. Terri Leach says:

I adopted a 4 month beagle, lab mix and he was potty trained in 3 weeks. We crate trained him. He is 9 months old now and I can leave him out in the house with his sister for 4 hrs at a time. He’s a great dog. So sweet and loving. Spoiled.

  17. Evelyn says:

We got an 9 week old beagel lab mix six weeks ago! And reading these comments I can see I am not alone. The hardest dog I have ever house broken! I know he is smart because I can say let’s go potty and he goes right to the door and sits and waits for me to leash him. My front yard is not fenced. I brag and pet when he goes potty and give him a little treat. But he still does not seem to get it. He will go in the house whenever the mood hits him. Sometimes he goes to the door and whines but most of the time he just goes! Puppy pads or news paper does not work because he makes them into toys! What I want to know is how long does it actually take? Will this adorable little guy ever be house broken?

    • Mar says:

I recently adopted 2 beagle lab mixes, and also have some issues with going in the house. The most important thing for my two is sticking to a strict schedule of bathroom breaks. They go out at 8AM, 1PM, 6PM and ~9PM. If one of these times are missed they’ll end up going in the house.

    • Liz says:

My lord, sounds like my Venus. She will potty outside, the pads and the floors. Refuses to listen. Has torn up several things. I may have to look into professional training after reading this.

i picked up a 8 week old puppy on the side of a busy road 3 years ago and come to find out she’s a first gen beagador and she is hands down the most AMAZING doggo i’ve ever had. she’s so loyal, gentle and loving. she’s very needy when it comes to wanting attention but all around an amazing pup! highly recommend breed!

  19. Matt says:

If you own a Beagador, get a doggie door installed. Make sure you have a fenced yard or plenty of countryside for them to roam. Make sure the bottom of the fence is dig proof! Or install and train with dog fence. Fenced yards should be at least 6ft tall. These dogs can jump! They can climb brick walls using their claws. Mine is 14yrs old now and only mellowed out 4 yrs ago.

I am having such a difficult time house training our Bergdorf. He just don’t get it. We thought that letting him out often with our other dogs that it would help. He can be outside for 30 minutes then 5 minutes later go inside.

    • Jenn says:

Did you ever have any luck with this!

    • Allison says:

We recently rescued a Beagador and are having the same problem with house training. How have you handled it?

    • Ivonne Guerreiro says:

I am fostering a 3 year old begador and he has had quite a few ”accidents” in the house. I too take him out and walk for about 30 min, as soon as we get in the house he goes. He even peed on my cats crate…. I have never had an issue with house training my Stafforshire Terrier. She never has any accidents, even now that she is a 9 year old dog.

So to answer your question, it been about a week now since we had any accidents, I take him out every 2 hours and put him in a crate for about a half hour. I take him out and let him around the house for about an hour and a half. I take him out again and he empties right away as soon as i get him out.

If I am leaving the house to run errand i make sure i put him in his crate along with a kong toy to keep him entertained. I dont leave him more than 4 hours alone. so when i get back I take him out outside right away. This has been working for me. I still dont trust him to leave him to roam the house free.
