The Aussiedor known for being mellow, intelligent, and playful, is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Australian Shepherd. It has a large, solid stature with a broad face, fairly broad head, expressive eyes, medium-large hanging ears, and a moderately long tail. Though the Australian Shepherd Lab mix is a relatively newish breed, it has gained popularity for its sweet and loving nature.

Temperament and Behavior

The Aussiedors are kind, loyal, and friendly to the people they know. They have the tendency to form close bonds with certain members of the family and cling to their owners, causing them to feel bored or neglected when left alone.

Because of their heritage as a herding dog, some Aussiedors may consider small children as their “flock members” and try to herd them. However, these smart pets will quickly learn to get along with kids once they are taught not to chase or nip at them.

Being protective of their home, they might show cautious or reserved behavior around strangers, and they sound occasional warning calls to alert their owner of danger.

Care

Exercise

An Aussie Sheprador enjoys working, running, playing, and engaging in any physically or mentally involving activity. Its high level of energy should be channelized in a proper way; otherwise, your Aussiedor may become very destructive. It needs at least 30-60 minutes of daily exercises, outdoor walks, fetching, and retrieving. High-energy activities such as playing with a Buster Cube or a Frisbee will also keep it focused and happy.

Grooming

Brush your dog’s coat weekly, more often when it sheds, to prevent matting. Sprinkle its coat with a conditioner made for dogs to detangle its hair prior to brushing. You can then use a slicker brush to remove tangles as well as dead hairs. An Australian Sheprador that is frequently brushed is generally clean and does not need more than a few baths a year. Painful splintering can be prevented by trimming its nails that have grown too long.

Health Problems

There are certain health issues that an Aussiedor can have including eye problems such as collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts. Some dogs may show signs of bone and joint disorders.

Training

Start training your Aussiedor puppy when it is young, and make it an enjoyable experience by using anything that best motivates your dog. It could be toys, treats, high-pitched happy voices, or dancing and playing.

  • Socialization: Walk your dog on a leash to busy parks or take it on a leisurely stroll to meet strangers in your neighborhood.
  • Obedience: This will teach your dog to respond to fundamental commands such as sit, stay, stand, drop, stop, and heel, helping in curbing its herding behavior.
  • Tricks: You could teach your Aussiedor pet various tricks such as fetching different articles including slippers, newspapers, tennis balls, etc.

Feeding

Since these are active dogs, their level of play and work is a decisive factor when it comes to providing the right amount of food. You could consider dry dog food that helps keep their teeth clean or a commercial frozen diet containing a combination of vegetables and raw meat. An adult Aussiedor typically needs 3-4 cups of dry food a day.

I cannot say enough good things about this cross breed. We got one three days ago and he already sits on command and fetches and returns balls. He is awesome with my older dog who has helped teach the little guy manners and boundaries. I would highly recommend this breed. Sweet, lovable, playful but I would not think about putting this breed in an apartment all day. We have 20 acres of trails and he’s awesome already OFF leash and stays right with us. Best dog I’ve ever known!

my family and I just adopted an 11 week old Aussiedors and lover her to death she is so smart and playful she was perfect for our goldenlab and our 1 year old

  13. Tap says:

Do you know if they make fair hunting dogs. I’m not looking at using this like I would a hound dog but if she could stir up a deer or point me in the right direction that’d be idle. Also, labs are known for retrieving duck, do you know if this breed will get fowl for you?

  14. Stuart says:

Are their tails naturally short like in your video? Seems the morons we rescued 2 from the litter, 1 female chocolate (possibly the runt), and 1 male black, they have what appears to be rope marks around the upper section of the tail. Someone said looks like they tried to either shorten them or rip them off.. Both seem smart and are very clingy, to us and each other. Love play fighting and nibbling each other.

    Please get back to me

      Hi!
Most Aussiedors come with full, moderately long tails but some may be born with bobbed tails. Moreover, breeders get their Aussiedors’ tails docked by the vet for maintaining good hygiene and avoiding injury while herding.

    • Michele Pohlmann says:

My aussie/lab mix and his brother were born with bobbed tails. Vet and trainer have verified that this is natural and not surgical.

I got my dog from PAWS and he is really aggressive with my Chowbrador. is this normal?
