Can Dogs Eat Beets

Dogs can certainly eat fresh, red beets in its raw or cooked form though in a very moderate amount. In fact, the ASPCA, have categorized this vegetable to be non toxic for dogs.

Owing to their rich content of vitamins, fibres as well as minerals such as potassium, iron, manganese and magnesium, beets form a rich food source for humans.

As far as the canine pets are concerned, these low calorie vegetables are said to help in keeping their liver healthy, however, including it as a part of their food on a regular basis is not a mandate. In fact, only 25% of your dog’s diet should comprise of vegetables. If you are already feeding him a lot of greens or other veggies, then you can occasionally allow your dog to munch on beets as a treat for achieving a deed during his training session.

You can give them fresh slices of raw red beets or even in its cooked form.

The beet leaves or tops are also considered to be good for dogs as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and also having a great PH balancing property. Always feed your pet with cooked beet greens instead of the raw ones.

A teaspoon of beet juice added to their meals is fine, though it is better to consult the vet prior to doing so as it is said to lower blood pressure.

Do not give your pet canned beets as their high content of salt and preservatives is not a healthy option for your four-legged friend. Pickled beets too are a strict no-no for them due to the high salt content present in it.

Beet pulp is used in a lot of dog food brands at the present time, though it contains a high amount of soluble as well as insoluble fibers, whether it is good for the dog or not is still a topic of debate.

Beet Chips

  • Take a bowl of sliced beets
  • Preheat the oven to a temperature of 350°F
  • Use a parchment paper for lining the baking sheet
  • After draining and rinsing the beets well, place slices of them in a single layer in the oven
  • Bake for about 35 minutes and after turning off the oven, allow them to be in for 10 minutes
  • Cool them well before giving it to your pet

They can be stored in the refrigerator for three weeks.

Are beets harmful for dogs

Overconsumption of beets may upset the dog’s stomach leading to vomiting or diarrhoea. Moreover, beets have a high content of oxalic acid and should be restricted for dogs prone to kidney ailments, stomach irritation or arthritis.
