Created by crossing between a Siberian Husky and a Labrador Retriever, the Siberian Retriever is a designer dog that should not be mistaken with a Labrador Husky, a Spitz dog breed, used for pulling sleds. While some may look like a Husky with a taller stature, others may have a Labrador Retriever appearance. These large-sized dogs have a somewhat triangular head with pointy ears that can stand erect, long legs with webbed paws, and a curly tail with a pointed tip.

Temperament and Behavior

Known for its loving, friendly, and cheerful disposition, the Siberian retriever makes a good family pet. This loyal and obedient dog bonds closely with its owner and always craves for human attention. It feels bored and lonely if the owner is away for too long, which may induce unwanted behaviors like chewing and excessive barking. Though it is much calmer and less noisy than its Husky parent, it does not hesitate to bark and alert its owner of an impending danger.

This lively and active dog, with plenty of energy, enjoys playing water sports, a characteristic inherited from its Labrador retriever parent. It has a natural preying instinct that can be curbed if trained properly at a young age.

Care

Exercise

Suitable for houses with an average-sized yard, these agile and energetic dogs need plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to burn off calories. Long brisk walks twice a day, running in a closed yard, and playing interactive games like Frisbee will keep your pet busy and entertained. They also love playing flyball, disc dog, carting, sledding, and agility games.

Grooming

Moderate maintenance with occasional brushing will ensure soft and shiny coat as well as keep dead hairs away. Trim its nails and clean its ears frequently, as it is prone to parasitic infections. Use a vet-approved toothbrush and toothpaste to clean its teeth every week.

Health Problems

No major health issues specific to Siberian retrievers have been identified so far. Thus, it is advisable to check for common hereditary health concerns including bone disorders like hip dysplasia and patellar luxation as well as eye conditions like retinal dysplasia, corneal dystrophy, and retinal atrophy. Visiting the vet twice or thrice a year for check-ups and immunizations is needed.

Training

Owners enjoy training them as these dogs can take in instructions and master the skills quickly. They might exhibit occasional willfulness, which can be dealt with firm and consistent training methods reinforced with right rewards. Socializing the puppies by exposing them to strangers as well as smaller household pets are needed to instill good behavior. Do employ persistent house training methods to help your Siberian retriever learn manners and etiquettes required in a family pet.

Feeding

The Siberian retriever eats sparingly but needs a nutritious diet that provides adequate amounts of proteins, vitamins, fats, and carbohydrates. It requires 2 ½-3 cups of dry dog food regularly. However, make sure you divide its daily amount in two meals.

Interesting Facts

  • The Siberian retrievers do not like wet weather and prefer to stay indoors when it is raining.
  • Apart from being a good watchdog and guide dog, these versatile dogs are suitable for police work, search and rescue, retrieving, tracking, military work, competitive obedience, and narcotics detection.
  • Their eyes can be of different colors, one being pale blue and the other one being brown.
