The Shih-poo is a designer breed that developed from the ‘Shih Tzu’ and the ‘Miniature Poodle’. These small, long-haired dogs have a round face, rounded button eyes, a long nose, hanging ears and a triangular muzzle, giving it a very close resemblance to teddy bears. Unlike many other crossbreeds, their tail is usually not docked but left long. Their little size and obedient nature make them an ideal family dog, perfect for apartment life.

Temperament and Personality

Basically, Shih-poo is a quiet, obedient dog. Although the shihpoo has a bark louder than the shih-tzus, yet they are not typical ‘yappers’. The tiny size of the shih-poo has made them typically shy towards strangers. However, having a friendly disposition, they are keen in pleasing their owners.

They know how to socialize with children and other pets. It is pretty easy for the owner to train this intelligent, alert pet. They are loyal, loving and affectionate, enjoying attention and spending time caressed, sitting on the laps of their family members. This makes them a good companion dog to families with elderly people.

Care

Exercise

Shipoos enjoy outing, and require a moderate amount of exercise. Take them out for a medium to short walk every day. Since they also love playing, allow them to play without a leash if you have an enclosed yard space.
Shihpoos also get a fairly good amount of exercise, shedding calories while playing around all day.

Grooming

The coat of the shihpoo is wavy to curly that needs regular brushing. This is to avoid their long hair from getting matted. Brush it with a soft brush with special attention to its hindquarters, behind the ears, and beneath the shoulders. You can also seek for professional help every 3 to 4 months.

Health Problems

Being a cross breed, they are not much vulnerable to catching diseases, except for the general health problems.
Since their inner ear temperature runs more than normal because of their floppy ears, they are much vulnerable to ear infections. To avoid this, keep their ears dry, especially after bath. Also insist on a good dental health regimen since they might as well be susceptible to dental issues.

Training

The ready-to-please attitude, along with loyalty and intelligence have made the shihpoos easily trainable. Socialize them from their puppy-days, and train them get used to strangers and be tolerant with other pets. Crate training is also easy, since this dog loves to poop and pee in such places that are away from their sleeping place.

Like many small dogs, this breed tends to act stubborn at times. So be sure to be strict and authoritative while training so that they understand the rule that it is you who is the leader of its new pack. But never be rude, since these dogs do not respond well to harsh training techniques.

Diet/Feeding

The Shih-poo is essentially an over-eater. Hence, monitor its dietary habits and calorie intake.

Like most other dogs of the size, insist on raw meat diet, and try avoiding foods not good for dogs in general. But, to be specific, dry foods like kibble is advisable for this breed, since they are prone to develop issues with teeth and might very easily suffer from premature loss of teeth. This should also keep it safe from gum infections and bad breath.

Interesting Facts

  • The Shih-poo is mostly a mixture of a shih-tzu and a mini Poodle. A shih-poo having a standard Poodle is extremely uncommon.
  • These small dogs are bred in three ‘cute’ variations: the Mini, the Toy and the Standard.
  • If healthy, these dogs do very well in dog sports like agility, obedience, and rally.

      Hi Catherine,
It is evident that your dog is trying to be protective and jealous or possessive at the same time. When your dog claims his food bowl, toys, sleeping area, or you as his own, he is telling you that he is confused, feels insecure, and lacks confidence. He is afraid another pet will take all those things he cherishes. Take him to the vet for a checkup to make sure there aren’t any medical issues bothering him. You may also consult an animal behaviorist in your locality to deal with unwanted behavior.

I just got a 5 month old shipoo puppy (Sunny) I am a little nervous because deviant pooping. He eats throughout the day and has access to water at all times. Should I be concerned?

  5. Charlotte S Puckett says:

My Shih Poo is 3 yrs old. I’ve had her since 8 wks old. She eats Science Diet. She weighs 15 lbs. Great weight for her. She is black and white, super smart, energetic and loving. I haven’t had luck in socializing her. If we walk on leash, she lunges, growls and barks at other people and dogs. At home, super sweet and great with my small grandchildren. She only acts this way when we are walking. She is very shy at the vets and groomers, pants, yawns alot.i think she just thinks she needs to be protective while walking. Other than that, can’t express how much I love her, how quick she picks up on tricks, even our language. Yes, she understands what we say!!

      • Julie says:

I have a small pack (4 dogs) all small breeds. All of them were easy to train because we put in a doggie door to our back yard. As soon as our Shih Tzu could, he couldn’t wait to use the door like a big boy. They all use puppy pads when it is raining outside. If it’s dark, we have to turn on the lights and go out with them.

And we feed all the dogs together. We give them food, treats, snacks, etc…together. they don’t fight because of it. We even buy each one a separate toy as well. They have to sit first and then they get their reward. They each have a name collar and a harness. Each one knows their harness and they get very excited because that means they r going somewhere.

I can’t stress it enough ..big or small dogs must be SOCIALIZED.

    • Gail ADAMS says:

Mine is the same way. She understands everything I say to her. She knows time to go to bed “sleepy night” and won’t go to bed until I do. So precious and I love her. We take her to the Groomer often
      Her nails grow so fast.

    • Danny says:

I have the same problem with mine?

  6. Danielle says:

Hi ya’ll! My shihpoo was just born (about 1.5 weeks ago) and the breeder says he can come home at 6-8 weeks. I am planning on taking extra time off work to get him settled in. That being said I would have to get him at about 6.5 weeks or after 8. Of course I would love to get him ASAP but from what I’ve been reading, the longer with the litter the better. Just wonder your thoughts? Pros and cons?

    • Molly says:

I also need any advice on potty training her as well. This is our first puppy ever . Thanks in advance! BTW her name is Lily ????

    • shi poo lover says:

Let her sleep with you. That solved my problem. I took my little shi poo who was only 3 pounds to bed with me because all he did was cry in the crate all night long. The minute I brought him to my bed he was happy and just slept next to me the entire night. Didn’t even wake up. Until the next morning when he needed to go out. These kind of dogs just love being with you all the time.

    • Teressa says:

Very easy traing( shih poo will train on their own very ) Start using the traing pads and create traing, after a few months the puppy will start to go its own. They understand our language very well also.I love my male shih poo – born Novembet 2016

  10. Marie Brandon says:

Hello, I got Ellie as a surprise from my family. She will be 1 year old on 2-21-18. She is extremely hyper and bites while playing. We are in our 60’s and are considering a rehome if she doesn’t calm down by her birthday. She is walked 3 times a day, played with 2 times a day and taken to doggie day care once a week. We are worn out. Is there anything we can do? Will she take a turn around at 12 months? Thank you.

    • Ty Council says:

Hi Marie ~ My Shihpoo “Bella” will be 1 year old on 02/22/18. She too is hyper and likes to bite or snap at my hands and fingers while playing. These puppies are very lovable and enjoyable but yes, they have an outrageous amount of energy! I am 35 and I can barely keep up with my sweet Bella! Unfortunately, the hyperness may not calm down until they are well out of the puppy stage. Bella plays very well with my friends dogs (various sizes) so she gets to burn a lot of her energy that way, in addition to our play time and her daily 30 min walks. I understand how much work these little treasures can be so I understand if you and decide to rehome her but hopefully you will have come to love her too much by then!

    • Sugie Hernandez says:

      Hi
sorry to hear you cant handle her where are you located? I love shipoos I will take her if you need to rehome. let me know.

    • Maggie Negron says:

Where are you located, if you decide to rehome her, I will gladly take her, I was given a shipoo as a gift from my bestfriend, she is 8 month, I love her so much, looking for a friend for her. She is a quick leaner, very kind and humble. I hope it works out for you, think about it very well, this breed is a perfect breed. I am 58 years old, live with only my Molly, I will take her in a heartbeat.

    • Judy Reid says:

I would love to have one of these beautiful dogs preferably no older than six months also I would like a black one and I want a female for companionship . We have a teacup Yorky he is very friendly but he is 15 years old and it would be wonderful to have another little puppy ! I saw one of these for the first time about a week ago and fell in love with Shihpoos

    • Debbie says:

Check into doggie training. I’m reading and watching. There are trainers who will also take them home and train. This new yuppie I’m getting will be my 4th dog

    • Chloe’s mama says:

Our shih poo used to bite and nip a lot. Every time Should would bite we would clap or snap in her face and say “no” very loud. She got the point within a week. Now she only kisses.
Try to take her out more to just run around. That will wear her out

    • Pat K. says:

      Hi Marie,
I feel your pain. I got a 12 month old shih poo a few years ago, when I was just about to retire from teaching. Murphy was a wild thing – running around like a maniac, bouncing off the furniture, literally, destroying leather items like shoes, belts, etc. I thought I had bitten off way more than I could chew, and was very discouraged because I loved him. About 9 months later, he calmed down and stopped destroying my shoes. Now he is 6 years old and much calmer – not as calm as my poodle, but he has an enthusiasm for life without being destructive. I still have to watch him closely when we visit in someone else’s home (he is always looking for something to eat!), but at home he is fine. Best of luck to you!! I usually adopt 1-2 year old adult dogs to avoid the crazy puppy period – a plan I will stick to in the future. 🙂

      • Debbie says:

I agree about taking to the vet. Also no water causes dehydration and hence major constipation that also is very painful. The vet may intervene to hydrate or promote soften stooling.

    • Julie says:

She needs a buddy to play with. Dogs are really playful for 2-3 years so u may need to giver her another year before she calms down. Get some high quality chews for her that keep her busy. My little guy like the large natural rawhide chips. Keeps him busy and they r too big to choke on.

  11. Sarah Muschalek says:

Hey guys. So I just got my little baby two days ago. She’s 8 weeks, so tiny. But she whines when she tries to go poop and I can’t figure out why. She’s hardly drinking any water at all. But she plays and pees just fine when we go out but her pooping is getting her. Should I take her to the vet? Change the food I’m feeding her? I need some advice.

    • Julie cox says:

Yes, take her to the vet. Her anal glands may be impacted. My shi-poo has had problems with that and I changed her food to a high fiber food and it helped. But take yours to the vet first.

  12. Monica says:

My little guy is very aggressive towards other dogs. It’s very embarrassing to take him out for walks. I need some help. He was a rescue but I’ve had him 5 years.

  13. Ashley says:

I have had my shihpooh 8 years he’s the sweetest little thing ever well not so little he loves to eat, he snores a lot sometimes even while he is Awake lol very smart very easy to train he knows how to bring you his dog bowl open the door and get back home if he gets out the gate, he loves to play he gets along with my other dog! He’s a very friendly and sweet dog very smart

  14. TerryB says:

I owned a shih tzu poodle for 9 years chloe, got her at 6 weeks. She was stolen last night and I haven’t been myself since. I’ve lost a part of me. She was loving, which might have been her downfall. I miss her dearly.

    • shih-poo owner says:

I hope you found miss chloe.

    • Becky Cowan says:

That is so sad. My little Shihpoo (Snookie) was 8 years old and the sweetest dog you’ve ever seen. She loved everyone! I had to have her put to sleep a couple of days ago due to kidney failure. She was a huge part of our family and now all I can do is cry. I don’t even want to get out of the bed. She was my best friend and I don’t want to get up and face anther day without her!

      • Robert says:

I share your sadness. My baby girl passed July 18 from kidney failure. I am still crying. 14 years went by too quickly. I feel so alone and empty without my girl Kenzie to love, hold and play catch with.

  15. Nadine Coleman says:

My baby is 14 months old and I have had her since she was 10 weeks old. I am having a very difficult time potty training her. I feed her and then let her go outside in my large yard and I always tell her let’s go potty. She can say outside a considerable amount of time, and then come in and poop or pee.

    • Dennis says:

We lay down sheets of newspaper . Her name is Penney. She is very active, runs all through the house. Very lovable.Does her duty,we throw the paper out and replace with new paper. She doesn’t go outside. We have ???? fox around here. So she is safe and loved .

    • Tina says:

Our puppies were the same way, they would get so caught up in playing that they wouldn’t go potty and then would immediately go on my rug. I had to teach them to associate the yard with potty. So we would kennel them for an hour after eating or drinking and then go outside and they would go almost right away. I had to play around with the timing a little, as far as how soon to take them out after they ate, point was to be sure they had to go. As soon as they went, we’d go back in, play/free time for a bit and then back to the kennel. Always go right outside immediately when coming out of the kennel. also my dogs would not go unless I was out there for some reason. Now my shihpoo and jack Russell are 9 months and 1 year and rarely have an accident in the house.

  17. Kristina says:

Thank you, for replying back. I will try to blend, chicken, beef,or vegetable with his dry food. I’ve tried, to put coconut oil, but he smells it, and walks away.

  18. Kristina says:

Hello. I have a shih-poo his name is Oreo who is 2 yrs old.He doesn’t like dry food at all. I try to mix it with wet food, but then he spits it out. He’s a smart cookie.what can I do,in order for him to eat dry food once in awhile. Oh and I’ve tried so many dry food, even the blue buffalo ones etc. .

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Kristina,
You may try enhancing your Oreo’s meal. Since you have already tried mixing wet food with his regular meal, reduce the quantity of dry food that you provide him to ensure you are not overfeeding him. You may add beef, chicken, or vegetable flavored meal enhancements and blend them with his dry food. Don’t feed him table scraps, as it will only cause your Oreo to shy away from dry dog foods.

  19. Debbie Brand says:

Lisa Small;. I am so sorry to about your puppies. It’s terrible when you try to go be them what is good for them and it turns out not to be!

I read many… Years ago to give them garlic to prevent fleas. I’ve always sprinkled it over my last two dogs food and they never got fleas! One was 12 yrs and the other was almost 15. I’m getting an 8 week old Shih poo today and I’ll continue the same preventative with her. Hope this helps!!

  20. Mahant says:

I have a very sweet shitzupoo female she is 26 months old, she is never fascinated by food .since she was a puppy never ever ate her food if we will not feed her for two days she will not eat.till now we have to spoon feed her like a baby. Is this normal, she does not like dog food atall.
She is recently so lazy but food is a big no no always for her

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Mahant,
Since you have always fed your Shih-Poo under supervision, she might have acquired the essence of social eating. To help her come out of this eating habit, you need to train your dog to eat while you are away. Set up a baby gate and teach her to eat, with you standing behind the gate. Practice by tossing a few treats and going out of sight, then coming back, throwing more treats and again leaving the place. It will help her associate your absence with the occurrence of good things.

  21. Sammy says:

We have two shiipoos, sisters from separate litters, they trained easily and are a complete pair. They are great friends, love people and other dogs and real cuddles. Can’t think of life without them

  22. Melissa says:

My shipoo Dumbledore is about to be one years old this end of August and he has been horrible at ripping up my trash basket and stealing food off plates if left anywhere, example:the bathroom. He only acts up when I leave a room, and I don’t know how to get him to stop. He is creat trained, so it’s really not a punishment if I put him in there. Any advice would be wonderful. When I do leave the house he’s in his crate, if he’s baby-sat while I’m gone he’s a good boy. I just don’t know what’s making him act like this. This is recent, like a week and nothing has changed at home.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Melissa,
When your Shih-Poo steals food, he is just acting on his natural behavior. For dogs, food means excitement and that is something you don’t want. Here are a few steps that will help your Shih-Poo become calm and submissive even if food is left unguarded in front of him.
First, get your Dumbledore to “sit” and “stay.” Then bring a plate of food close to him. You can keep it 3-4 feet away from your dog. When he comes near the plate, make a sharp sound, and tap him firmly with the fingers. Repeat this method several times to help him get over his excited state.
Second, inspire your dog to lie down by giving him treats – even from your plate. Before you start cooking or eating, encourage him to lie “down” and make him “stay.” Reward him by offering him a scrap of your own food when he does this successfully. Repeat several times until he associates lying down or staying with receiving a treat.

    • Samantha Ledford says:

He may be acting out as his way of showing you he is upset at you for leaving him

      • Melissa says:

I can’t take him to store or errands when it’s hot outside, he’s safer inside with AC. Just found out we’re expecting another baby. Maybe he senses it.

  23. Valerie Stein says:

I have a 3 month old ShiPoo, she only weighs a little over 2 lbs. and doesn’t seem to be getting any bigger. How much will she weigh full grown.

    • Jessica says:

I have a 4 year old shih-poo you I’ve had since she was 2 months. She’s not a big eater, just basically her food and little scraps here and there. Cici is about 11 lbs which my vet says is a good size for her.

    • Samantha Ledford says:

I had a mini shihpoo and she only weighed 3lbs full grown (about 2 years old when weighed) and her vet said she was perfectly healthy. Really depends which type of shihpoo you have on how big he/she will get.

  24. lisa bosworth says:

I have a male shihpoo who is very fussy with food and is not a big eater. He spits food out when he’s had enough and prefers fat on meat rather than meat although he likes ham and lamb chops. He won’t eat dog food in jelly sauce or gravy. I’ve been feeding him pouches of food from wilkinson which are more like our food with no sauce but he’s gone off them. Can anyone let me know what main meal I can give him

    • Jessica says:

My Shih-Poo had trouble eating when she was a puppy. When she was about 4 months old I was trying to feed her brands like Eukenuba and Iams, which she did not like. It also made her sick. I switched to Royal Canan for Shih-Tzus and she loves it. She has been eating it for 4 years now.

      • Kimberly says:

I have a 10wk old shipoo n at 6wks old she was crying alot n getting into the other animals food including the cats. I Thot it was cuz she’s a puppy, but the vet suggested royal canine so I waited a few wks before buying it cuz it’s a bit pricey for me,but she’s so happy n full, the food is small bites n she loves it n is very content.

    • Rolanda says:

Hi Lisa I have a Shipoo 5 mo old I was told by the breeder to only give Ceaser Dry food. I also have Lhasa poo they are brothers. Same mother but different fathers. I purchased both puppies from the same breeder. And she suggest the same thing. They both luv the Dry Ceasar food. Walmart carries a big variety. Good luck to u.

    • Julie says:

Try raw food. My shipoo loves it.

  25. renee pilgrim says:

Hello, We just bought home our 9 week old shih poo 5 days ago. She is just the cutest. We are seeing a different temperament than stated. She is very fiesty. She fights, bites on shoes, grabs on pant legs, not aggressively but it’s strange to see our dog, Roxie so active at this stage. Is there any information you can give on taming her aggressive personality at only 9 weeks old.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi!
Biting, mouthing, and play-fighting are common learning behaviors for a pup. Since they do not have hands, they tend to investigate objects or explore the new environment with their mouth. Similarly, play-fighting with littermates is a fun way for puppies to develop coordination, positive interaction, social and physical skills. If your 9-week-old pup is very mouthy or overly active, you may give her a little shake and scold her in a low-toned voice. If Roxie does not quit play-fighting or biting with every correction, scold her in that low growling voice and flip her over on its back, and gently hold her in that position until it stops struggling.

    • Joy Schwartz says:

My suggestion is a “shake can.” Fill an empty can with four nickels and tape shut. When there’s bad behaviour, shake the can and say “NO!” They learn quickly as the noise is startling. This has worked for my two wonderfully!

    • Debbie Brand says:

Hi Renee! I just got an adorable Shi-poo a couple months age myself. My little Shatzy sounds just like yours! If you have come up with any other ideas to help with these problems, please share! Would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

  26. Kelly says:

My sweet little Shih-poo, Arlo, is 16 weeks old. He’s coming along with some of his training, but we cannot get a handle on crate training. I’ve tried everything from rewards to praise to having a personal trainer come out and help, but as soon as he can’t see me, he will poop in it no matter how small or how big the crate is. He definitely has separation anxiety from
Me. He only does this when he is alone. Most of the time I have other people who can watch him for me, but there will be times I need him
In his crate (like, so I can go to church) and I feel like I am torturing the poor thing. I’d love some advice.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi!
When you are in the house, have your Shih-Poo familiar with being in his crate. The more time he spends the more it will help him feel safe and secure in his crate. Begin with short periods but gradually increase the time. Feed him in his crate and give him his favorite treat, which will act as a stress reliever. Moreover, you may turn to classical music to ease your dog’s stress and calm its nerves. Scientific studies show that Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and the like may induce more restful and relaxed behavior.

      • Kelly says:

Thank you very much. I will try this. It’s so hard to hear him cry.

        • Fay lawson says:

I have tried this my shihpoo liked his crate but still when I left him he got so distressed he pooped and weed all over and also got his jaw fast in the crate I did leave him lots but still the same and he does not stop crying so I don’t leave him alone

          • Fay lawson says:

My shihpoo is Teddy 17weeks old

  27. Carol king says:

I have an 8 week shih poo . I’m trying to lease train her . Because she is so fast . Also I can’t get her to come to me . I take her out every 45 min to an hr. She sleeps thru the night . Will pee out side but when we come back in she will pee again on my hardwood floor won’t use a potty pad . So I keep her crated. Hoping soon I can start letting her around the room

  28. Susan VanDyke says:

I have a 12-year-old shi poo with cataracts, and I have two questions. first, since he is almost completely blind, taking him to a groomer now is not an option as he is very aggressive when he hears the scissors snipping. Any thoughts on how I can groom him at home and keep him from becoming frightened? and what info can you give me on eye drops that are sold online for cataracts. Thank you.

I have a shihpoo that is turning 6 the 22 of march he thinks he is human and gets very jealous around others that comes around me. I’m currently watching my sister shih tzu that is 7/8 weeks old and my dog is madder than hell at me he grouse and snap at the puppy. He’s so mad at me that it’s hard for me to get him to eat. He won’t come near me like he use to. What do I need to do to get him to quit being a spoiled brat?

      Hi!
Relax your dog by trying to show your affection for it, especially when the other dog is around. Ask your sister to bring her dog at your place, while you pat and hug and embrace your Shih-Poo in front of it. Give them toys to play, or just something interactive that keeps them busy TOGETHER. This phase in your dog’s life will soon go.

I owned a two year old Shih-poo and she was wonderful. I took her to the vet for a regular check up and they gave her a flea medication as a preventive. She died in her sleep. I looked online and found out that flea medication has killed over 700 dogs last year. I also called my groomer who told me that three dogs died this week of flea medication that he knew in his shop. She did not even have fleas. BE CAREFUL OF FLEA MEDICATIONS THEY ARE NOT SAFE. Dawn dish soap work I love this breed they are great.

I have a shihpoo who is a female . Sweet as can be but will not stop pooping and peeing in her crate .. we have tried everything ! Any help would be great . Thank youn

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

Peeing and pooping in the crate can be for many reasons, most of which are psychological, rather than physical. For instance, if your dog’s crate is too big for your pup, it will have the natural tendency to use one side of the crate to pee and poop, and sleep on the other side. In such cases, you should give the crate training patiently and affectionately. However, such issues can also be due to bladder infections, or any other health problems. Visit a veterinarian if you see the problem persists!

      Best of luck!

My mom has one too that shakes a lot. Good question why they shake a lot??

        • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

          Hi!
Shaking or trembling in small dog breeds could be for many reasons, especially due to hypoglycemia, liver shunt, or neurologic responses like seizure. However, it can also be a sign of pain, cold and stress as in, when something changes in the household or strangers are introduced. If you can’t find out the reason yourself and fix it, you should consult a vet immediately.

I have a 2 year old Shi Tzu. When I first got him at 6 months, he shook terribly, but he was also willing to be cuddled. For us it turned out that he was scared. Even now, while he is “Mr. Pollyanna” and loves people and other dogs, he can still easily become frightened in new surroundings or when he’s insecure. When he is insecure/frightened, he very literally shakes and while I hold him closely and he seems to like that, he still shakes until the threat is gone or we get into a place he’s familiar with. Don’t know about the medical things as that is not his case, but they certainly are not very brave!
