The Pomimo dog is a designer breed produced by crossing two purebreds – the Pomeranian and the American Eskimo. It has a compact and sturdy body, wedge-shaped face, erect ears, and a longhaired coat inherited from its American Eskimo and Pomeranian parents. These intelligent, curious, and lively little dogs excel in a wide range of canine activities such as obedience, agility, and tricks.

Temperament and Behavior

The Pomimos captivate their owners with their elegant appearance and cheerful disposition. These affectionate pets are loyal to their family members and enjoy engaging in family activities. Since they thrive on human companionship, leaving them alone for a long time might cause separation anxiety in them.

Being naturally alert and suspicious of strangers, the American Eskimo/Pomeranian mixes are adept at guarding and watching. In spite of their small stature, they seem to have the attitude of a “big dog”. They may bark excessively at unfamiliar persons and other dogs who they think are intruding on their territory.

They make great playmates for kids; however, their interactions should be supervised by adults, as the Pomimos’ high energy level could be overwhelming to young children.

Care

Exercise

Your little Pomimo dog thrives on activity, and you should keep it busy with daily hikes, romps at a fenced yard or a dog park, or a session of interactive games. An under-exercised or inactive Pomimo is likely to become bored, which might lead to inappropriate chewing, excessive barking, and other destructive behaviors. Make sure your pet dog does not overheat while you exercise it since it may not do well in hot weather.

Grooming

A thorough brushing of its coat twice or thrice a week is recommended for preventing matting and cutting down the amount of dead hairs left on your furniture and clothes. Bathing your Pomimo depends on how dirty it gets, and it should be restricted to 6-7 times a year. Check its ears every week for symptoms of infection. Brush its teeth 3-4 times a week and trim its toenails once a month.

Health Problems

The Pomimo, being a crossbred dog, is likely to acquire some of the disorders affecting its parent breeds. You should be aware of eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, disorders of bones and joints, and problems with gums and teeth. Some dogs may suffer from hyperpigmentation and hair loss.

Training

Being stubborn by nature, these dogs need a confident and firm handler who could take charge in leading and teaching them.

  • Socialization: After bringing home a new Pomimo puppy, you should give it a few weeks to adjust to its new family. Once it has become used to its surroundings and understood who will be its main caregiver, you could invite your friends, coworkers, or neighbors for a visit and ask them to bring their pets over to play, which may help them to distinguish a friend from a threat.
  • Obedience: To stop its high-pitched barking, use the “Quiet” command. If it stops barking, immediately reward it with tempting treats and praises. Repeat the process until it learns to stop barking on the command.
  • House training: The small-sized Pomimos are hard to potty train. After choosing a spot outside where your Pomimo can poop, take your pet to that specific area every 1-2 hours, especially in the morning as well as after meals. Once it has eliminated outdoors, give it rewards.

Feeding

You could consider a combination of quality dry and wet food for your Pomimo. The recommended amount of dry dog food should be 1/2-1 cup a day.

Hi my just turned 1 year old pomimo has been shedding a lot was wondering if that is normal also what type of dog food is the best for this breed?? when he was younger we had a problem with giardia and getting rid of it took 3 rounds of meds so they put him on a dog food from Hill prescription diet food W/D and hes been on it since then…could this be why he is shedding a lot does he need a more nourishing food for his coat etc?? If you are familiar with this type of breed a refferral for food would be amazing :)Thank KIm

We found the cutest Eskipom abandoned in eastern Montana, 40 miles from the nearest town. He galloped across the road and jumped in our car. Check out Mika at helpforhomelesspets dot org. His coat was so matted he had to be shaved. I have cute photos of him riding in the back of our car. We wanted to take him, but Billings is a long way from our home. He is well behaved and a real lover.

We kept one out of our litter of 11. He is so beautiful and a wonderful dog. Beautiful mix of the mom and dad. We won’t be breeding them anymore for my work schedule is busy now and I won’t be able to dedicate the needed time for anymore litters. Wouldn’t be fair to the mom or pups.

Hi my name is Amy. We lost our little girl to cancer. She was an American Eskimo Spitz, white. We lost her May 5th. She was 19. The vet said she was the most well taken care of dog they ever seen. People kept telling us right after to get another dog, but it’s not that simple. We are now trying to find one that is mix with Pomeranian. We want a girl and to be white. Her name was Trixie. She was everything to us not a dog but our baby girl. She got her cancer around when we found out my husband had stage 3 cancer. It has really been hard. If u could get back to me I would really appreciate it. I can send u pics of our baby girl to. Sincerely Amy
