Produced by crossing a Papillon and a Pomeranian, the paperanian is a small-sized dog that is characterized by erect ears, a curly tail, black eyes and nose, and an abundance of long dense fur at its hindquarters. The standard paperanian has a conspicuous frill of dense hair on its chest and neck coming in either solid colors or parti-colors. Some members of the breed may exhibit the typical white markings of a papillon on their forehead and nose.

Temperament and Behavior

This smart, gentle, and sweet-natured dog loves to draw attention, always enjoying the company of its family members. It gets along well with kids, other household dogs, and even with strangers, if socialized from a young age. Being a curious and playful dog like its pomeranian parent, the paperanian keeps itself busy and plays around energetically. However, it is not known for its guarding or watchdog abilities and is not likely to alert its owner of an intruder.

Care

Exercise

Like most dog breeds, the paperanian needs regular outdoor activities to keep itself in good shape. Since it is a small-sized designer dog, a quick regular exercise like on-leash walking or jogging in the yard is adequate for burning off its energy. Moderate playing sessions with dog toys will satisfy its natural playing instincts.

Grooming

Its long, dense coat can be kept free from mats and tangles with gentle brushing twice or thrice a week. Bathing every two to three weeks with a shampoo suitable for hypoallergenic dogs is needed to keep its fur clean and glossy. Use a towel to wrap it up immediately after a bath to keep its fur dry. Cleaning its teeth once in a week will ensure sound dental health.

Health Problems

Although not much is known about its health issues, the paperanian may suffer from bone problems like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia that are seen in its parent breeds. A visit to the vet once or twice a year is recommended for your pet’s safety.

Training

Training these loyal and intelligent toy dogs is moderately easy, but requires patience and consistency. With firm, positive, and repetitive training methods, you can expect the results to come steadily, if not immediately. Use of treats and rewards can make the process a lot easier. You can introduce the puppies to normal house training to curb any unwanted behavior in the future.

Feeding

Your paperanian will enjoy having half a cup to one cup of dry dog food every day, provided its diet is balanced with food rich in protein, calcium, vitamins, and fatty acids. Make sure fresh water is readily available.

Interesting Facts

  • The pomeranian papillon mix loves to bark along with other dogs.
  • Since it can adjust to different weather conditions, its health is not affected by heat and cold.

I lost my 14.5 year old Paperanian in July 2017; Tyler was the best dog and breed of dog that I have ever had. I miss him more than words can say. Does anyone know where I can find a puppy the same breed? The breeder that I purchased him from has moved.

Hi! my boyfriend and I have a paperanian and we live in a small apartment! he is such a happy little guy and loves just being with us. I let him have playdates with other dogs when we’re gone for more than a couple hours at a time, but as long as he gets love from you and can play with other dogs from time to time, he is a perfect apartment dog. When we’re gone he sleeps the entire time. Neither poms nor paps are great about being alone, so he cries when we leave, but once we’re gone he’ll sleep the whole time. They have a ton of energy and we’ll go on 2 mile walks but he knows when it’s play time and when it’s cuddle time–so he’s totally fine not having a ton of space to run around in the house as long as he gets a chance to run around and play outside. His best friend is a kitten and they play all the time and keep each other company. Would recommend socializing early and maybe getting a kitten if you think that he’d benefit from a friend!

My beautiful Teanna is going to be 11 years December 2017. She is the most wonderful friend, companion that has ever entered my life. She has brought so much beauty and happiness to ever person and animal she has ever met. I can not imagine the pain the day I no longer have her with me. She has lived through a female Tabby cat a male Maine Coone Cat that were in my home when Teanna came into my house and lived for 15 years. She picked out Blackberry her next Maine Coone Cat who passed away last fall of liver disease and she actually mourned the cat. The longest I have been away from her is twice for 3 days, This is a total of 6 days in 10 years. I Love and adore this dog. She is red sable color and she has fallen Never fallen short of returning that love and affection. I can not Imagine the day when she is no longer with me. I would not want to ever live a day without one of these little dogs in my life. Presently she has a new Maine Coone 9 month old kitten living with us. Please keep me informed as paperanian puppies are born. I did not realize how difficult it is for people to find them. Breeders may also send me information. My name is Nancy and my email is NUrsitti@aol.com.

  12. Dorene J. Stamper says:

I found my Lady Sofia at the SPCA in southern Oregon. She’s a nine year old, very sweet and loving. The only reason why she was there is her owner, of nine-years, went into a full care facility, and they wouldn’t allow her to keep her dog. So my suggestion is to check in with retirement-full care homes, the Senior Centers or the SPCA. You never know when one will show up.

  15. Lisa says:

Hi I have a 5 year old paperanian he is my baby boy. I want to stud him out but don’t no how to go about it,if anyone could hep it would be much appreciated.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi Lisa!
If you are thinking of using your Paperanian at stud, make sure your pet has the health certificates and some special qualifications required for breeding programs. For more information, contact local breed organizations or clubs.

    • Lynn Ott says:

Dear Lisa, When my rocky (paperanian)was 5 he mated with a full blood pom female and produced our second pet that is the most beautiful male pap/pom mix you have ever seen, with the best personality traits the breed is known for, we lost rocky tragically Sunday and we are totally devastated.thank god we have his puppy still.

  16. Gill Harmer says:

I have a beautiful little girl Paperlanian, twenty two months old called Layla. She is my companion and I love her dearly.
The only downside is she hates me going out without her. She plays up, tosses things about, barked and wails. I feel so guilty and leave only when I have no choice, such as doctors appointments, and food shopping etc.
I am wondering whether to get another Paperlanian as they are so lovely and cute. They are also friendly to other poeple and most dogs too.
I am finding them hard to find. I live in Portsmouth, Hants and am looking as locally as possible. Maybe even trace where she comes from. I.ve had her since nine weeks old., a one Lilongwe baby.
Can any one help me to get my wish and company for Layla.
I.m in no hurry as it must be the right dog for Layla to bond with. And us too. Gill

    • Gill Harmer says:

A friend for Layla and a new baby dog for me.

    • Kay says:

I have Vixen, a pappom (or paperanian) as well. She loves her two dog pack members, Batgirl a papitese (papilon/maltese), and Lil’ Fool, a smorkie (silver yorkie/maltese). All three dogs are concidered toys, and the other two help my Vixen with her seperation anxiety. Leave the tv on or music she’s used to hearing to also help her while you are gone.

      • Michelle Petrilli says:

May I ask what breeder you used to find your Paperanian? We lost ours after 14 happy years! My husband and I are heartbroken and only want that breed–he was the perfect dog!!
