Lab Pei

The Lab Pei is a mixture of the Labrador retriever and the Chinese Shar-pei. Like their parents, these are very intelligent dogs that wouldn’t always follow commands submissively, though they are very committed to their masters. These are large dogs with a pretty sturdy structure, small overlapping ears, with a face very much like their lab parent. The eyes are almond-shaped and their noses are black to dark brown. These dogs often tend to have loose facial skin, though not as wrinkled as the shar pei.

Temperament and Behavior

These dogs generally have an even, protective, loving temperament which they inherit from their parents. However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that their Sharpei parents also have a crude side. If they take mostly to the sharpei side, they might at times be independent, dominant, alert, lordly and brave.

Like their parents, they would try to protect their family members. They are emotionally responsive, loving, smart and kind.  Though they are not aggressive to strangers, but would warn-bark if they come across intruders, strange noises or anything suspicious. Thus they make a good watchdog as well. They are good with kids and other pets provided they get the right training, and at the right age.

This intelligent dog is ready to please you. However, in return, they would expect some attention and affection from their loved ones.  They can adapt and establish itself very easily with family life, and thus makes a good apartment dog.

Care

Exercise

Because they are average to large-sized dogs, the Lab Pei needs a pretty good amount of daily exercise. They need lots of physical activity all day, and a spacious apartment is always good for them. Their exercise requirements can be fulfilled through long walks and jogging. This should keep a balance between their physical and mental health, and prevent them from being flippant and destructive.

They have a high playing instinct and would enjoy if they get an open yard to run and play around. But make sure the yard is fenced and safe before you untie your dog from its leash.

Grooming

Because they have a short coat, the grooming requirement for these dogs is moderate to easy. Brush them once to twice a week so as to retain the natural glow. Also, note whether your dog does not enjoy water like its sharpei parent. In that case, bathe it very rarely, may be once a year, if you think they are really untidy and in need for one.

Dogs with wrinkles are susceptible to skin infections. If your pet has some wrinkles, cleaning them regularly by wiping the folds with a moist cloth. Rest of the grooming part, including nail-trimming or brushing teeth, are similar to other pet dogs.

Health Problems

Just like most other cross breeds, no breed specific issues have been determined in the lab pei. However, both general and genetic issues can’t be ignored. Dysplasia is a common issue with larger dogs, and both their parents are vulnerable to this. Similarly, other problems like entropion, luxation, cherry eye, ear infections, stenotic nares, tight lips, malocclusion, hypothyrooidism, demodectic mange, oleosa, hot spots, skin odor, etc. can’t also be ruled out.

Training

Though these dogs are intelligent enough to pick instructions, commands and training easily, but if your dog has taken to the sharpei’s demeanor, it might show up independent, or apparently obstinate, nature. This might tend to make them disobey the trainer. In that case, a very firm hand, and some good amount of patience is required for it to be trained.

If your dog finds you not strong enough to be its pack leader, it’s likely that it will take over as the boss. You can consult a professional trainer the moment you find your dog displays the slightest behavioral issue.

Give them socialization and housebreaking trainings from the time you bring them home from the breeders. Train the puppies consistently and with firm hands. Praise your dog or give them treats whenever it finds success or displays obedience.

Diet/Feeding

Your dog has lots of energy and hence, needs a healthy diet that would provide it with optimal nutrition. Stick to the same routine diet like the other large-sized dogs with the same energy levels. If you would go for dry foods like kibbles, be sure that you stick to quality and that, you are providing it with the right quantity of food.

Best hybrid breed ever. I have a 7 year old Sharpei Lab named Tyson. He has black fir and big brown eyes that are just full of love when I look in them. He makes me laugh and smile. He is always by my side. Not a complaint about him

I never had my dog’s DNA done which I regret. He was a Chinese Shar Pei mix and weighed around 90 pounds. My son thought perhaps part German Shepherd. He was a beautiful brindle color, like a little tiger. He was so sweet and friendly. Lived with cats. Sometimes had issues with dogs but usually friendly in the end if allowed to sniff. He had a little helicopter tail and a blue tongue. He had lots of skin in his neck area and lots of hair which also gave him a lion look. He had the cutest ears. He did like to run away when he was young. I was always chasing him as he dragged his leash or when he shook his head hard enough to somehow get his collar off. He shed a good bit – we were always vacuuming. He loved his treats. He was such a strong dog. He died on New Year’s Day. Cancer. I am missing him so very much. He was only 13.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My Black Lab Shar pei mix died of cancer last year in April. She was 12 and she stayed strong. She was the sweetest dog I’ve ever met and if you have a Black Lab shar pei mix, or any kind of shar pei mix for that matter, give them lots of love and they’ll give you lots of love and protection back! The reason I say protection is because my dog would bark and bark all the time! Even with my friends, she would bark and then sit down. My father would play with me and she would nip at him for it. Shar pei mixes will find their favorite person and be their shield. Even before I was born, she would sense me. She was a good dog. Treat your shar pei mix right and they will love you forever.

We rescued a Lab/SharPei female and had her for 14 years. We don’t know how old she was when we got her (neighbors captured her after watching her run wild for months in some vacant property behind their homes). She was a big girl, in her dotage weighing in at over 100 lb. She got cancer, upon which we successfully operated, and had both of her knee ligaments re-attached (we have pet insurance). She was in very good health organ-wise, but had a slowly developing and debiliating spinal stenosis. Eventually, she could not get up on her own and we had put her to sleep. I am still sad over it 2 years later. She was very quiet, hardly ever barked, but was stealthy and alert to protecting us and her home, so when she did bark, you took her seriously. She got along well with other dogs, and the cats in our house, tho’ she didn’t welcome “foreign cats” onto the property & had to be instructed/guarded about that. She was lightly brindled with the Pei rough coat, & with those cute Pei little flaps of ears, and a pink nose. Her body was the squared-big chest of a block-head Lab, and she was fabulously muscled in that way. I kissed her good-bye every morning when I went off to work and I can still “feel” the way she licked my face in return……We got her by chance, but the mix, IMO, is a good one that you will not regret, esp. if you know the parents as friendly, loving, and laid-back Lab and Pei.

I just adopted 1 year old advertised as a lab shar-pei (black male). Love labs and labmixes. Was not familiar with this mix and when I first saw him thought might be lab with pit bull due to oversized head. Am doing dna test and hoping not to find pit bull in the mix. Seems smart and playful but keeps jumping on my girlfriend and daughter and onto our couch and trys to chew pillows. Also, like others mentioned, will try to run away if allowed.

    • B. Haan says:

Our lab/pei male is 15 years old now. Got him as an 11 week old puppy. We had 3 small children then. He did like to chew and run away for walks with other people when he got the chance back then. But he has always been the sweetest dog. Even people who took him on ‘walks’ liked him. He has been and is one of us and we love him so much. The chewing seemed mostly when we weren’t with him. He loves to be with people and not alone. I hope your pup works out. We can’t imagine life without ours, 15 years on.

    • Beth says:

Try to get treats like rawhide they get very entertained shewing them and also take him for walks every day if you have a chance they get exsausted and sleep almost all day.I adopted a 1 year boxer mixed and it was like yours they are still considered puppys I started walking her 1 hr every day and giving her the treats I mentioned to you..qnd playing in the backyard to get her tired.. she has improved a lot her behavior..and I recommend a lot of patience ????????????

  6. Lorik says:

I have a brindle Sharpull (shar pei- pit bull mix) female that just had a litter of six. The father is chocolate lab. Does anyone else have this mixed breed? I’m curious about health issues and personality traits. The mother and father are both sweet, stubborn, strong, and very independent. I have noticed how protective the mother is of her babies. This may be due to it being her first litter, but she tends to hide the babies and doesn’t like for me to take them out of the crate. I only take them out and put them in a box when I need to take the mother outside or feed her. The mother isn’t aggressive. She is still gentle with me, but she just seems nervous and wants to keep them with her at all times. While she eats, she keeps checking the box to make sure the babies are where she can see them. Both parents are rescues, so I have no knowledge of their environment before I got them. However, I think the mother is doing a great job so far.

    • anna reilly says:

my shar pei-pit bull-lab is the sweetest most docile dog ever. she only barks when needed, potty trained quickly, likes other dogs, humans, and babies. only downfalls are she tore both of her cranial cruciate ligaments in her hind legs and she gets seasonal skin allergies

    • Suzi says:

Omg I just lost my Capone he was 15! Did his dna and found out he was a pit sharpei lab! Would’ve never guessed!!! ???? where are you located? Can you send me some photos of the pups please? I want a dog of his same make up 🙂

      • Lori says:

I live in Blackshear, Georgia. I will have to take some pics of them, but there are two females that are mostly black with some areas of brindle coloring, there are two brown males, and two brown and white males.

Our family have been blessed with a golden shar pei lab cross, Skipper. Hes 15 weeks old and loving every minute of him being with us. He comes to preschool with me three mornings a week and is fantastic with all the kids. I have started him at puppy classes and has picked up all the basics so well. Beautiful natured wee boy. The only problem I am having with him is his sensitive skin. I did have him on a full raw diet and vet has changed me to 100% dry food diet. Will let you know if that makes any difference. Any suggestions welcomed.

    • Shelia Thrasher says:

I have shar pei-lab. Big 80 pound girl, and the light of life. Adopted her a year ago, when she was 2 years old, and she bonded so fast with me. I live alone so she is my company, and my protector. Could not ask for a better pet. She is so intelligent it amazes me. She does shed. A LOT! After $900 at the vet to find out why she looses so much hair, I give up. Just going to accept that she looses more hair than normal, and try to keep my floors clean.

Your dog needs a superior Omega”3″fatty acid supplement. I’m a dog groomer and it makes all the difference. Also get a grain free kibble that has a minimum of a 4 or 5 star rating on dog food advisor.

We adopted a nearly 4 year old Lab Pei who was abandoned at a park in San Antonio. She is THE BEST dog and I am baffled why someone would have left her in a park and not tried to find her. Her previous owners clearly spent time and effort training her she came to us knowing basic commands and is a well-mannered dog. She has learned new things and is VERY smart. She is my running buddy and at work she is our chief morale officer, as she is so mild-mannered I can bring her to work. We are so lucky to have such a sweet animal for first time owners. She is great with our kids and looks forward to her bed time every night (I just have to say “bed time” and she jumps up and goes into one of the kids rooms each night). I cannot day enough about what a great family member she is to us, even my non animal loving husband is in love. Cannot recommend this breed enough, yes she sheds but only really hard in the spring.

    • Tina says:

we havent had a shar pei lab but are looking to get one. we have, however had two full blooded shar peis in the past. the best food we found was purina one…the vet said to feed dog food without soy in it and it helped immensely

  8. Charlotte says:

I just adopted a younger (8m-1year) lab pei mix about two weeks, to a month ago and I love him. I am 14 I have 2jobs, one at a restaurant , the other is babysitting. and love nothing more than coming home to my big baby waiting for cuddles!he sheds… A lot. No big deal. I learned to vacuum a lot.he’s hyper!! I learned to play with him more He’s never had to be trained but listens very submissively. he likes to chew pillows and cushions, stuffed animals. But never anything else. I have a cat and duke is very playful towards him, they get along fine. I take him the the oscoda beach and he loves pedestrians and children, he’s pays no mind to other animals, even the mean dogs, every now and then he will make a new friend. He’s god on a leash but I never use one, he’s very loyal and has separation anxiety o I always me sure somebody is home with him, but for these reasons the stay as close. I dontgetscared hell run way even though I live in the center of town ear high traffic. Duke didn’t acknowledged the cars. He’s extremely gentle and loves babies and children, although he refuses to play tug of war or wwrestle because he is so gentle . hleq loves swimming , playing fetch like a pro, n playing chase (always stayng close to my side) he’s an amazing cmpanoin and he learns so quick I couldn’t have asked for. A more PERFECT FRIEND!

  9. Dale says:

I adopted a 10’year old lab shar pei mix recently and after 2 months he has developed quite a personality and is very playful. He has some ear issues and is hard of hearing so can’t go off leash. He is a bit unpredictable with male dogs but amazing with people and very loving and loyal to me and my family. He loves long walks and can get a little wired in the evenings if he hasn’t had enough exercise. He is very obedient and can understand hand signals and likes routine. He is a big boy at 75 lbs and loves to eat. We were not sure of his breed at first but his tail and ears and blue spotted tongue gave it away that he was a shar pei mix. He has black lab as well and sheds a lot and loves the water.

  10. Karen Hartman says:

I had to put down my Lab mix Sharpei named Louie on 07/05/17. I had him 16 years. He had developed severe arthritis. He was a great guard dog. He was loyal to the end. I took him for his last walk across the farm yard 07/05. He could hardly make it anymore. He loved the farm, like my father, who died 05/12/17.
Sixteen years ago I adopted Louie from the city dog pound where they said they might have to put him down because no one would adopt him. I named him Louie, and always said Louie got rescued from the slammer.
He was the best dog I ever had and even though he did quite a few annoying things like digging up my cushion, etc. I always said he had a few great qualities that made him the best dog ever, and I can now only laugh about the mischievous things he did. He was loyal to his family and always was on the watch for his family. He was the dog of all dogs. He had a forever home with me and I will dearly miss him.

    • Ella says:

I have to put down my Lab Sharpei. She is 17 years old, still there mentally, but unfortunately has Degenerative Mylopathy. The day she can’t get up anymore is here and I have to make that choice for her. I am 28 and have had her since I was 12. The best dog ever. Extremely independant and regal, but very very loyal. She literally showed up on my doorstep one night, as a 6/7 week old pup. The store down the street had someone drop off a box of black puppies, so we think someone dumped them in the woods by my house and she made her way to the light on the porch. She is the smartest dog I’ve ever known, in her hay day I couldn’t keep her in her yard with any lock. She would literally jump up on the gate, hold the lock mechanism down the. Hold the gate open with her body for her parter in crime, so they could both escape. I had to pick her up from the pound a few times!! Face palm. But it’s a testimony to her spirit. Always there for me and was my gaurdian as a child. Best dog ever.

  11. Sandy says:

My dog Harley is a rescue dog and we have always wondered what his breed was. The original rescue said he was a lab/Australian Shepard mix. We recently saw his original description from the kill shelter he was surrendered to and his description was lab/ sharpei. Our vet said the lab sharpei seems to be accurate and by everyone’s descriptions here, it Would seem so. The only thing is Harley has a bobbed tail. Does anyone else have the lab/ sharpei mix with a bobbed tail?

    • Amy says:

I actually just had a lab pei show up on my front porch. He does have a bobtail. I didnt know if this was natural or whoever had him before got it cropped. Hes been a great puppy so far. Very vocal when we talk to him and he’s so smart.

    • Teressa says:

I have a beautiful lab pei, she is 10 years old and I’ve had her since she was 14 weeks. She has a bobbed tail, however the person I got her from had her tail cropped. I can’t imagine my life without my Heidi.

  12. Sallie says:

I love my 12 year old black lab pei. She’s definitely more on the Shar pei side. She can be stubborn and independent and hates water. But she potty trained herself so there is that.

She’s also prone to skin allergies and yeast infections and never did get to the point where she could go off leash. She’s hopped the fence a time or two and she basically stays in the front yard, but will run away if she’s not ready to come in. Typically, I’ll sit on the porch and eventually she’ll come to me. Other than that, she been a low maintenance dog. She didn’t start developing allergies until she was 5 years old. I wouldn’t trade her for anything and love this mix, so would get another in a heartbeat.

She’s great with kids, other dogs, and cats and when she was younger, she could hike with me all day. Now that she older, all she wants to do is sleep, but I reckon she’s earned that.

Her has a lab type coat that sheds a lot.

  13. Jim says:

My Shar-Pei mix of eleven years, eight months passed away this last Sunday, just three months shy of his third surgery to remove a mast cell tumor on his foot. The third time was merely debulking it, but it was so too aggressive and chemo didn’t work at this stage. I woke up on Saturday to find his foot had swelled considerably overnight, took him to the vet and discussed my concerns with it bursting over the next night which ended up happening. He had been to the vets between 30-40 times since last September and we had many discussions about his time nearing. His first surgery was in Oct. 2013. Second was in Nov. 2015 and then Jan. 2017.

I brought “Steeler” home at three months of age from Las Vegas’s Lied Animal Shelter in November 2005 and some of the photos shown here seem as though they could have come from the same litter. His weight fluctuated a bit as an adult from 62 lbs. on a diet to where he normally was, between 65 and 71 lbs. He was very intelligent, great demeanor though sometimes a bit aloof around other dogs, particularly once he got older. He was a favorite of many and made many a lasting impression upon almost everyone he met with his mixture of inquisitiveness and friendliness.

Steeler is already terribly missed, but I wouldn’t trade the last few days for the experience of being his daddy for all but three months of his eleven-year eight-month-old life.

    • Tina says:

I lost my lab pei back in 2008-2009 do to cancer mass tumers too. His dad was full shar pei and he ended up dieing two yrs before do the cancer in his jaw. My pain is with you on your loss.

  14. Larra says:

We had a lab pei (Ben) for almost 10 years that we just had to put down due to cancer. My husband and girls are just devastated. Ben was the best dog/son/brother to our family. We miss him terribly! We will be looking for another lab pei here in the next few months if anyone knows of one (preferably a male/pup)in need of a good home. We are in Indiana but would be willing to travel.

    • Ann says:

If you have not yet found one, we are getting one in Jamestown, NY this week. There are 3 girl pups that are 6 weeks old.

    • Rose says:

I had a lab pei have a litter that has a blue heeler daddy. Mama had the best temperament EVER! Accepts my boots as party of her litter when they see the puppies. I rescued from under the house the same day age had them. She never attacked me. We had a little bond prior. They are 3 weeks my roommate trying to take to pound because I have to leave town for work training and our lease is up. Eyes just started opening today. 3 boys, 2 girls. The runt is a girl and she has found her little growl bark today lol. Email me if interested in a baby still. But work will definitely be involved due to age.

  15. Mona dillard says:

We have a 2 year old male lab/shar pai mix. Love him. He sheds alot. Doesn’t like strangers. And is almost like a cat. Wants to be petted when he wants and that’s it. He has a skin problem. Itches all the time skit irritated and almost sticky. Anyone else?? Any solutions? I know he has to be very uncomfortable.

    • Sergey Uhanov (Certified Veterinarian) admin says:

      Hi,
Itchy skin condition, also called pruritus, is one of the commonest dermatological issues in dogs. The reason can be many including allergies like environmental allergies (AKA atopy), food allergies, or even from parasites like fleas. Skin itching can also be caused by sores, hot spots, and so on. Initially, you should try to find out the reason by yourself. Keep an eye on its food habits, or search for fleas in its coat, brushing from time to time. If you fail to find out the reason, you should go to a good vet, without delay.

Wish your dog gets well soon!

      • Katy Berry says:

We have a dog we think is a lab pei. He has allergies. We had him allergy tested and he’s allergic to dust mites and storage mites, apparently found in bags of dog food, etc.

  16. Christi G says:

So glad to have found this! My dog is about to turn 2, and the vet was able to tell me they thought she was this mix. We rescued her from TN so we were not sure what she is. Our family loves her so. She does not she’d at all, and is very intelligent and protective. She is an excellent watch dog, but also great with kids and is very affectionate. We couldn’t ask for a better dog (even though she did chew a hole in our couch as a puppy but besides that she is great)!

  17. Juancho Mitchell says:

I have a Golden Lab Shar Pei female. She is about 6-7 years old. We got her at the shelter and it’s the best $40 I ever spent. Loving, caring, a pack animal for sure, and great with kids too. She’d be happy if we went on 5 hr hikes every day but is happy with 30-60 min.

She doesn’t walk on leash after her training took hold. It took me about a year to get to that point. She doesn’t go across the street without me but can explore the sidewalk at her leisure but comes/stays when commanded. You get a sense of the mixture’s loyalty and independence there.

She sheds a ton. Twice a year the shedding is worse than the the rest of the year.

I’ve heard from more than one person that a Shar Pei mix of anykind is one of the best dogs they’ve ever run across.

  18. Patsy Mc Cabe says:

Hi! I have a yellow lab/Sharpei. She 12mths is very smart but if she gets loose she will not come when called.I will not lie I am having a hard time enjoying her.

  19. Jazz says:

I have an 8 month old black Lab/Shar Pei mix and he took to the Shar Pei side. He doesn’t listen and has horrible separation anxiety. As soon as I leave the house he starts barking wildly. He needs 100% affection ALL of the time. Even when I take him for a run he won’t lay down in the house. He’s very hyper, independent, and has anxiety.

This could be due to the fact that I got him from a poor environment as the previous owner worked long hours.
I am hoping he calms down onc I get him fixed. He will whine if I close any door, chews things….. just overall not a good review.
But he’s mine and I’ll keep working on him!!!

    • Patsy Mc Cabe says:

I have a 12mth yellow lab/sharpei female. If she gets loose she is gone and won’t come when called. I’am not enjoying her. So sad!

    • Jpatrick says:

You definitely want to get him fixed ASAP. At 8 months, the puppy stage could last a year longer. Try giving him something to chew, like some of those giant rawhide knots if you can find them. That might help calm him down in the house.

  20. andrea says:

I have a sharpei x with lab/husky she has long fur and sheds a lot.we have to send her to groomer 3 times a year for deshedding groom and I brush her every second night. She is very protective and doesn’t like anyone to approach her while on leash especially at night. We love her and would not replace her.

  21. Carol says:

We have a 12 month old black lab pei. We adopted her from the shelter just recently & so just getting to know each other. So far she is loving, but will lay down or go to her crate, if we don’t pay attention to her. She came to us on medication for dermatitis. She weighs 54 lbs. but they considered her thin at the shelter. All in all, we’ve been enjoying getting to know her.

  22. Jane says:

I have a 8 month old male labpei. He is about 55 pounds at the moment. I adopted him from a rescue, (Spartacus Legacy), and that was one of the best choices I could’ve made. He is a wonderful watch dog for anybody who lives in the house. He is good with other dogs and cats. He sheds all day every day, all year. We haven’t had any medical issues. The only problem is on the leash he pulls a lot but it is getting better to walk beside me. In the car, He will either sleep or lay on you and look out the window. He is very good in social places such as petco or pet smart. Overall, labpeis are a great dog and easy to train. 🙂

  23. Kim says:

We have an 11 year old lab shar pei mix. He is the best dog we have ever had. We do have ear issues and he sheds but I can say that he is obedient, smart, great with kids, super loving and protective but not aggressive. He is the most loyal amazing animal I have ever had. He did come from a shelter and seemed to somehow know we were there to give him a home right from the start. Can’t say enough good things about him.

  24. Brenda says:

We have a 5 y/o female shar pei/yellow lab mix. A great dog, intelligent and loving. Moderate shedding. 50 pounds. Protective of her yard, but friendly and tolerant. Extremely easy to housetrain, and stays in our yard, but her biggest fault is that she does not reliably come when called. Loves her daily walk, but 45 minutes of daily exercise makes her a nice relaxed companion in the evenings. A great traveler; she’s been to 22 states and is an adaptable vacationer–she’s been invited into visitor centers, shops and museums because she’s so cute and laid back.

  25. MarianneH says:

We have a 6 year old female lab pei mix, roughly 60 lbs (trying to get her down to 55ish). We adopted her from an animal rescue as an adult dog. She sheds little to none at all and seems to be hypoallergenic. I’m allergic to most dogs, and have had no issues with her. She is a fantastic family dog, gentle with babies, intelligent, loyal, and friendly. She has had a few “bratty” moments with other dogs. She always seems excited to meet other dogs, then sometimes growls and snaps after they smell each other. We are working in this. She is very healthy and has great teeth. She is prone to dry skin, which we treat with fish oil and coconut oil. Shar pei have very narrow ear canals, which she inherited. We clean her ears out about once a week to prevent wax build up. She is such a happy dog, we are lucky to have her. Would definitely adopt another lab pei in the future!

i had a shar pei-chesapeak mix and she was so loyal. I always wished their was a new breed of this mix. Mine lived to be 15 years old. her sister lived 13. i think the mix gave them better health compared to a pure shar pei or chesapeak bay retriever bloodline. my sister raised chocolate labs and most of them only lived 8 years. i grieved for awhile after losing my dog, my partner. i think a mix of lab and sharpei would help extend their lives. i have a few pics on facebook of my dog. i think they are a beautiful mix and hope we can create a good healthy breed. I came up for a name for mine, Shar-peak.

We have had a male Black Lab/Bone mouth Shar Pei mix for 7 years. Ben is a smart, and very athletic dog. He is good in the house, and good with the cats. He loves to meet other people, but with other dogs, he is unpredictable. If another dog gives him the wrong body language, he can get agressive. Ben is also very strong willed, and can have a disobedient streak. Outside, I really can’t let him off leash because I cannot call him off a deer, rabbit, squirrel or other dog.

It is important to watch the diet of this kind of dog. Ben will eat whatever we feed him, so it’s important not to give him too much. His ideal weight is about 42 lbs. Others of this mix could be bigger.

I have a black lab and shar pei mix and she sheds horribly bad. Have to vacuum every other day if not everyday! But i love her and she is sooo cute…she is about 60-65 pounds?

Hey! So im really confused, so if youre crossing a lab with a sharpei dog, wouldnt that make them shedding dogs? Considering that they both are big shedders? i m really hope you can clear that out with me because I am trying to buy one of these mixes, and dont want one that sheds!
    Thank you

      Hi,
While the Chinese Shar-Peis are minimal shedders, the Labrador Retrievers would shed moderately (and that too, seasonally). This naturally makes the Lab Peis prone to shed quite less.
      Thank you.

Both are shedders, my sharpei-Chesapeak bay retriever mix shed twice a year like all labs. They are still a lab fur mix. i vacuumed many layers of shed along the wall and carpet as she grew older. I still stand by my choice that they are still a great dog that is faithful, smart and loving. even though they shed, they are low maintenance. keep an eye on their teeth and tartar build up. Watch for lumps if they get them. most are non dangerous fatty tumors,(i think due to the lab side)

Just found site. I have this dog. One of the best dogs I have ever encountered in my life. Big shedder! There is probably one week out of the year when he doesn’t shed. He need to pack on hair quick when the temperatures change. I do live in Michigan. I am sure that makes a difference in the shedding. He looks like a lion around the neck he gets so much it looks like main. The most dedicated loyal protective dog. We walk rough terrain and he watches to make sure I make it over rocks and places that we have to climb before he goes on.
