The Italian Doxie was developed crossing the Italian Greyhound with the Dachshund breed. Hence, some individuals inherit the dachshund’s short, elongated body, while the others tend to stand taller and sleek like the Italian Greyhound. The large ears with bent tips are set atop their elongated head, while the eyes are large and roundish. They have a sturdy structure with a long, hanging tail.

Temperament and Behavior

The Italian Doxies make incredibly sweet and loyal pets that would always be devoted to their owners. Ideal for apartment living, this is an active breed that loves fun. All these virtues make them equally affectionate and kind to kids and other dogs. Though, they might as well display traits of stubbornness and mischief at times, on the whole they make for a good companion and family dog.

Care

Exercise

This dog is not much in need of brisk exercise. Because of its natural disposition of roaming and playing around indoors, only a short walk or jog every day should serve the purpose. Your Italian Doxie appreciates when you take part in games and activities with it.

Grooming

They will not shed much, besides, they have a short coat too. So, only a minimal grooming will keep your dog clean and healthy. Brush your dog’s coat at least twice a week with a brush having moderately firm bristles. Do not bathe them unless needed, or else it might affect the water-resistant capacity of its coat.

Health Problems

There have been no reports regarding health disorders or issues that are unique to the Italian Doxie. But watch out for inherited or general ailments.

Training

  • For stubborn dogs, maintaining regularity in training is important. Let training be not a once-a-day event to your puppy. Rather, let all your activities with your dog all day – like exercise or playing – be a part of the training schedule. Keep all interactions sweet and fun, since experiencing moments of fun should give it a vibe that, training is something that you are not compelling it to do, but just a way of life.
  • Do not punish your puppy frequently or at least for simple things. It might build up stress in your puppy’s mind and debar its natural mental development. Eventually, your dog might easily begin to suffer from chronic anxiety, resulting in a series of notorious activities backed by mischievous intentions.

Diet/Feeding

Planning your dog’s daily diet schedule vests entirely on the size of your doggie. But make sure, you go for a high-quality kibble diet with all the essential nutrients an active dog of its size requires.
