The Bea-Tzu has been developed by crossing the Beagle and the Shih-Tzu. Noted for its intelligence, loyalty, and protectiveness, this dog has a great demeanor and gets along great with everyone. For this very simple reason, they make great companion dogs as well. Their protective instinct makes them a good family watchdog as well.
The bea-tzu is a small to medium-size dog with short front legs, broad head, droopy ears, round, brown eyes, and a heart-shaped nose. Their muzzle is shorter than their beagle parents. Their slim and short body, along with the long, curved tail, is covered with medium to long straight fur.

Temperament and Behavior

The bea tzu is a loving, compassionate, sweet-tempered dog that has a sense of loyalty and commitment to its owner and his family, and strives to be around them. They are a perfect choice for homes with children. They would provide protection to its loved ones to such an extent that might apparently seem to be possessiveness. So are they good with kids and fellow pets, and are non-aggressive to strangers. In fact, this breed works very well in a home that houses other pets. However, whether your puppy will grow up to a frequent woofer, or a quiet canid, depends upon the genetic factors. However, normally, they are rather quiet by nature.

They are fairly active, and their level of adaptability is moderate. They would suit well in the apartment if they get enough exercise. They are also not much adaptable to cold climatic conditions, though they are pretty much resistant to heat. They love to play, and enjoy the view of other animals during playtime in order to stay entertained.

Care

Exercise

Bea-Tzus make great indoor pets provided they get lots of fun and playtime. These dogs are playful and energetic, and should ideally have at least a small yard in which they can play. Do not keep them on a leash when they would play. But make sure the space is enclosed and safe for the little canine. Also, like most dogs need, your dog too would need some daily exercise, though not vigorous. You can take them out for short-distance walks, or for a short jog.

Grooming

Brushing your dog regularly is urgent, or else they would end up getting their hair matted. Brush them at least thrice a week, and bathe them when needed. Also, getting your dog groomed once in 7 or 8 months by a professional is also recommended.

Health Problems

Bea-Tzus are found to be healthier than both their parents. However, they are not immune to general dog diseases, or those that are genetic. Bea-Tzus have been noted to have developed skin problems like Beagle.  Some specimens have also been found to develop eye problems like their Shih-Tzu parent. Crossbreds are usually less prone to picking up diseases or develop health issues. However, it is always a good idea to research its parents before you adopt them from dog breeders or rescues.

Training

Being a clever and smart dog, it would pick up training very easily. While some might display signs of stubbornness inherited from the Shih-Tzu lineage, it is most likely that they would soon learn to adapt themselves well and learn rather quickly.

Never be rude to your little one, or else there are possibilities to develop training-related or behavioral issues in its adulthood. Rather, a positive reinforcement-based approach is recommended. Hold patience, praise them or give them treats as they succeed in picking up a trick, or learn something new. They are usually well behaved and would always be ready to please their masters.

Begin training your bea-tzu soon after owning them. Urgent trainings at a young age include crate, housebreaking, and obedience. Be consistent while training. Let them understand that you are the leader of its ‘dog-pack’. Also, be aware that your puppy does not develop issues like ‘small dog syndrome’ since childhood since it is common with dogs of its size.

Diet/Feeding

Ideally, you should feed your beatzu twice a day with two main meals. However, no breed specific routine meal is recommended for your dog. But considering their small size, provide your bea tzu with the same quantity of daily diet just as the other small-sized dogs would need. But make sure, whatever they eat are good quality dog foods that would be sufficient in providing them the standard levels of nutrition. This is what an active and energetic dog needs.

My pup is a bea-tzu. He is very energetic and loves to eat. The only problem we have had with him is potty training. He is very stubborn. My Shih tzu is female and had pups by a beagle. Her pregnancy was rough. She lost the entire first liter. She kept getting into our neighbors fence.. got pregnant with again and had all 6.
