Australian Retriever

The Australian Retriever is the cross between the Australian Shepherd and the Golden Retriever. This is a medium to large sized dog that would make a loving, zealous and frolicsome pet that can steal the heart of the owner and its family. This breed commonly takes part in herding and can act as a good watchdog as well. These long-coated dogs have a stout, well-built physique with a bushy tail, a broad head, hanging ears, a round black nose, and small round eyes.

Temperament and Behavior

These dogs are mostly very intelligent and have an even temper, inherited from their parental side. They love to be part of the family and are possessive about their belongings and loved ones and often end up being protective of their family members. This might not, however, prove to be too good when it comes to playing with very young kids. Even though they are good with children, possessiveness, mixed with boisterous attitude, might end in displeasing incidents.

Australian Retrievers are good with pets, especially with those they have been brought up with. They are also comfortable with strangers, though, but wouldn’t hesitate to bark and guard their property and family if they come across anything fishy or suspicious. However, their natural herding instinct might fade away with age.

They would serve their families with complete loyalty just in return for a little attention and love. They make good companions with those they are fond of. These dogs have the medium adaptability to weather changes.

Care

Exercise

Owing to their level of energy and their size, these dogs need a good amount of daily exercise. Being companion dogs, you can utilize their company every morning or evening, taking them out with you for a good amount of jogging or for long walking sessions. Little or insufficient exercise might easily induce destructive behavior or psychological hazards in these high-energy dogs. They love to run and play, and would often compel their owners whining, for taking them out to play, or to the dog park. Do not keep them on the leash if you are playing with them. But be sure to unbind it if only your area is secured and fenced.

Grooming

Australian Retrievers shed. Some shed less, some heavily. So keep combing their coat at least twice or thrice a week. This should keep them clean in one hand, as also, keep their body hair mat-free. Bathe them with mild soap, if they actually need a bathing, though, and are really unclean.

Health Problems

Though most cross breeds are free from proneness to different diseases, this breed might be susceptible to various issues due to its physical traits. Their floppy ears can bring in ear allergies and infections, just like their long coat, skin problems. Keep their ears and skin, if you are one responsible owner.

Also, do not forget, your dog is average to more than average sized. This might as well give them issues like dysplasia, etc., that are common with other large dogs. Also, be aware of its parents’ illnesses, if any, since they are not immune to genetic diseases.

Training

Because of their intelligent nature, training this dog is an easy task, if not pleasing. This dog is much inclined to obeying the commands of its owner. However, begin training the Australian Retrievers when they are brought home from the breeders or the rescue as puppies. Since this breed has hunting and retrieving instincts inherited from its Retriever parent, it is advisable to get them acquainted to their fellow pets, including other dogs, as also with your neighbors, friends, etc. You can train them with retrieving games like ball games or Frisbees.

Crate, housebreaking, obedience or agility training should also start soon after adoption. The large sized Australian Retrievers need a strong-willed master who can handle them and let them know who the real leader of its ‘pack’ is. The Australian Retriever dogs will require very less repetitions of commands to obey specific instructions. But do not be rude or angry with them. A positive reinforcement training technique would always work right. Be compassionate while the training is on, and appreciate their skills whenever they pick up a trick successfully, and you would be surprised to see how your dog grows up as an object of envy to other dog owners.

Diet/Feeding

Your Australian Retriever needs the perfect nutrition in the form of routine meals that would supply them with the standard amount of energy that they need, especially during the time of rapid growth. Hence, do not ever compromise on the food quality. Since they are dogs with lots of energy, provide them with a high protein diet. Look out for foods that are specially meant for the dogs of its size and energy level. Finally, you can always consult your vet for any advice for the perfect dietary routine for your beloved pet.

Looking for an Australian Retriever puppy in Southern California. I can only find them in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas….anyone breeding these babies in California? We have had a purebred Aussie and an Aussie/Kelpie mix. We would love a Golden but can’t shake our Aussie-love and I think this would be a great fit for our family.
